  1. Nolan has used real aircraft as much as possible. thank god. the spitfires are real, the 109 is a lookalike. apart from a double chin it looks quite good. http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/dunkirk.html and they have used large models for the crash scenes. all in all, it should be worth a watch. real spitfires flying real vic's is always pretty
  2. RAID and gaming applications don't really suit each other. games are single applications that want large amounts of linear data. RAID likes lots of applications requesting lots of random data. A single SSD will probably be faster for DCS. but a raid would be better for 10 virtual servers all running a copy of DCS, on one box.. i used to RAID0 spinners because they were faster for linear tasks in raid. but SSD you dont get as much boost if any. and with 2 disks a raid has twice the risk of failure. a single pcie SSD is 3x faster than a SATA SSD anyway. it would be interesting to see if RAID0 speeds up VR as that is not just the game requiring cpu and data. but i doubt it.
  3. 2.1 is in alpha and needs to stay in the oven till its done. because it is clearly undercooked when it comes to VR.. and as a watched pot never boils. im off flying 1.5 in VR, instead of staring at the oven.
  4. read all the threads about people not being able to see the hud in bright sunshine and you realise why the mig 29 repeats its hud to the HDD.. they are the only planes in 2.1 with a 100% readable hud.. the mig29 and the su27..
  5. have you tried re seating your RAM? take the RAM out and swap it in the slots. RAM issues cause instability and they are quite common especially if your mobo has quick release slots.. i usually reseat my RAM at the same time i clean out dust every 6 months. the instability looks like a heat isuue because it is, as the RAM warms it loses connection to the pins. and quick release slots allows it to wiggle out of place. so the instability either happens when its cold or when it gets hot.
  6. to increase your peripheral vision, i push the rift on my face :) so if im trying to look back and left. i will turn my head as far as i can and i will then pull the rift left a bit. with my left hand to increase peripheral vision. gets rid of those annoying blind spots. and i cant move the rift that much. so its not a cheat. it just gives me a more normal peripheral view. i use a racing seat in the middle of a room, so the seat wont rotate and i have a complete lack of hand holds. maybe i should fit a 5 point harness to pull on... pulling on the seat belt works in the car..
  7. i can confirm my trackir didn't last long... now im thinking that USB slot needs a jetseat hanging out of it :) especially for the massage function. i haven't moved this much in years. to much sitting in cockpits :) the touch controllers are a revelation as well.. support for them in DCS would almost be as big a game changer as VR itself.
  8. in the old days you had to buy a new gaming rig every 3 years to keep up with frame rates. everyone needed a new rig when crysis came out. anyway its an alpha. optimising for frame rates happens after you finish adding all the content.. so surprise, they are still adding content... OP that's why you should care about it.. its one step closer to optimising.
  9. just got mine today. it is kinda fun. :) in a OH MY GOD kind of way. i went on VR in the early nineties at universal studio. it has come on a long way :)
  10. Amazon currently has the rift and touch controllers bundled with a £100 voucher for the oculus store. i didn't actually notice the offer when i bought mine so was pleasantly surprised when i got the voucher through email. think the offer is running for another month.
  11. the Swiss army tent is way more versatile than your average red cross tent. more built in functions. like that thing for getting stones out of horses hooves. and a totally hygienic reusable toothpick.

from what they said in the new damage model. if you clip the wing tip, you will only damage the wing tip. not the entire wing. so the new damage model will improve it for ww2 aircraft at least. the helicopters are pretty good with collisions. i have knocked off all sorts of parts from skids to tails and main rotors. and it always felt realistic for what i was doing.
  13. the update 1 has given me terrible FPS in the mig 21 now. which is a shame as i was having fun with it in Normandy. those tiny brown smudges they call runways are so terrifying to land on :)
  14. its called the law of diminishing returns. you will see the greatest difference in smoothness between 0 -60 fps. above 60 fps and you start to not notice.. until you get to a point where you cant notice.. its smooth. and more fps and its still smooth. its exactly the same with the number of polygons in 3d objects. above a certain amount and a face wont look more like a face if you add more polygons. because it already looks like a face.. so ignore the raw numbers and play with settings that you "like", for whatever reason bar raw numbers. because it looks good, or because it runs smoother.
  15. you should use the manual switch when you know you are going to be boosting for a long time. you know the coolant temps are going to go up and need full radiator. so pre-empt it to keep oil temps within operating parameters longer. when you reach 115 degrees put it back on auto. so it closes when you take the boost off and cool down. when you begin the death spiral with the k4 from 22000ft. you do not want to cool the oil down below operating temperatures. that is as bad as letting it get to hot. you have an under lubricated engine and engine damage. to hot and the oil is to runny. to cold and the oil is to thick. oil temps will kill you before water temps. usually. so the oil temp is the one to watch. an under lubricated engine makes extra heat for the water coolant. and airspeeds over 300 produce a lot of cooling. so if oil temp is low and coolant is high... you will be cooking your engine. if you play rise of flight then you know all about this :) baulked more engines through diving with the engine on idle, than cooked on full throttle. anyone killed a spitfire with cold in 2.1? something to try this bank holiday afternoon, as its raining.
  16. the rudder of both the huey and the spit feel different in 2 than 1.5. i noticed this before 2.1 so its a 2 engine thing. you need to use more pedal. which actually makes the spit less twitchy. but means i dont use enough pedal in the huey.. it is probably like this in all the aircraft?
  17. the game isn't to stare at FPS numbers and play with graphics settings. the game is to fly aircraft. so i can understand why some of you are getting frustrated. turn your fps counters off and just fly. and you will have lots more fun.. with NTTR the FPS used to change with every patch.. i stopped looking at the FPS counter a long time ago to retain my sanity. im sure this is going to be the same, its an alpha we all volunteered for :) xplane11 has worse FPS... and worse terrain, but better clouds.
  18. the p51 or the spitfire. allied planes have all those guns in the wings for the shotgun effect when deflection shooting..
  19. it is no longer green but white. and when you use the starter, instead of dimming in colour it changes to a funky purple colour. its very saints row. but not very military :) also the landing and spotlight dont work at night, they are on when i go to external view. (have the white cone effect) but i see nothing on the floor. do i want to put this here or in the huey section?
  20. I don't disagree with you at all Dejohn. i learned the basics and got safe trimming. and i have even stood in your position defending trimming over removing the spring :) somewhere on here. but i reached a point where i stopped getting better. and it drove me nuts. then i took the spring out. and im still getting better. humble pie consumed :) when i stop. then i will shell out for a full length spring less Huey clone stick getting rid of the immersion breaking trim model was a good thing :) skullleader sounded like he had hit such a hurdle. although im not sure if its the same hurdle :)
  21. go to the module manager and then the installed page and click the drm button next to the ww2 asset pack. this should bring up the activation window for you to enter your key
  22. i have the page file turned off from the start. luckily i checked to see if it was still off. Microsoft had sneakily put the tick back in "system managed".. microsoft.... so if you had virtual memory off. you may want to check it is still off...
  23. if you dont have gsync then use adaptive vsync and not the in game vsync. i get much better frames with adaptive vsync and no tearing. http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/adaptive-vsync/technology
  24. SSD use space depending on wear. so they fragment on purpose to maximise the life of the disk. its an expensive placebo effect. de fragmenting them.. its just extra wear for them to deal with. why windows 10 does not let you.. disks with moving parts need files close together. so they can read without moving. why you should defrag spinners.
  25. so we have another 9gb map download after the 14gb 2.1 download? all new textures for the Nevada map and all the aircraft etc. for the new lighting system? we going to be here all night :)
