I would check to see what difference you see when changing graphics to high instead of ultra. Shadows are the biggest hit - try lowering them. For best performance your System drive should be a SSD NVM M.2 (even with 32 gb RAM DCS, or probably the Windows system, still writes to continuously to the page file.) Your DCS Drive should be an SSD as DCS writes (only a small amount) to this drive - and turn off the track file) And finally, make sure DCS is running on more than one core - since the second last Beta update mine now randomly starts with either 1 or all selected. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=243170 In VR - which requires more grunt than normal, I get a steady 30 to 45 FPS with no stutters and no flickers on busy MP servers on all maps in all areas - and my pc is nearly 3 years old! One big but - for VR I’ve found the sweet spot for my CPU is 4ghz. Lower than this and even with all the above my frame rates are halved.

Rejoice! The VR performance update comes next week!!
JimmyWA replied to Jarhead_SGT's topic in VR Bugs
Hi Wolf, yes, multiplayer was the killer for me. All cores finally made it playable (hate using that word - it is a sim not a game!) I just flew the first mission in The Big Show campaign. I've recorded the video to use as part of a youtube tutorial I'm putting together, and will upload it in the next few days. I'm getting around 45 fps when not running FRAPS to record, and around 30 steady when recording with FRAPS. It did drop down to 15 for some very short periods - like when I first went to the F2 view on the enemy - but even then it didn't stutter. When I got into the dog fight with many planes, the FPS stuck at 30. -

Hi Wolf, I guess because you said you had stutters? I tried a Spit on a Normandy MP map today - there weren't many available in my area, and my ping was around 300! With all my cores in use (when I started DCS it defaulted to 1) I got a steady 30 fps up to a peak of 45 fps and absolutely no stutters - it was the same when I fly on my usual Caucus server which normally has around 10 players and lots of AI stuff happening. When DCS defaults on startup to 1 core, my frame rates are around 15, and stutters galore. If I get time I will upload a video of the flight - which had all graphics settings on high except for shadows which are on the lowest, and a VR setting of 1.2. I've included screen shots of my graphics settings. -
Just reporting it as is. Before the second last beta update DCS only ran on 1 core for the 3 years I’ve had this PC and performance in VR in MP was terrible. I bought the Vive when it first came out in Australia. Since the second last beta update DCS.EXE is suddenly starting either using 1 or All cores. Coincidentally, this is also around the same time ED are saying they can’t work out why some ppl are getting performance improvements with their VR mod, and others not - with some ppl reporting a decrease in performance. I posted a comment about this on their request for information on VR post, because suddenly having this happen (if it is happening to others) is going to skew their results. Unfortunately they deleted my reply as it didn’t contain the data they wanted. I don’t have process lasso as I’m happy to just hit ctl alt del and set the affinity to all when I start DCS.

And check that DCS.EXE is running on more than 1 core! After the second last update, for me, it now randomly defaults to either running on 1 or all cores, and the difference in FPS goes from 15 FPS to a steady 40 FPS on MP servers (and my PC is nearly 3 years old - and not overclocked at the moment!). I've suggested this should be a sticky in the VR forum, as it is so important for those affected by it. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=243170

That’s good to know. I’ve avoided strafing tanks in the past for that very reason!

Yep - just wanted to make sure anyone stumbling on this thread searching with the same problem knows about this fix (and coincidentally I’m with iiNet and I got the web server not available around 2 months ago when this solved it for me).

Be aware that this can also be caused by a different issue. When I got the error that the DCS Login failed I googled and discovered that by setting auto login to off, I could then connect, and also set auto connect back on. please read this faq and find the options.lua file https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.c...q/501/#1825373 open it in the text editor find the section "miscellaneous"] = then the value: ["autologin"] = true, change true to false save options.lua file and run DCS

[CANNOT REPRODUCE] Uncage and Radar Alt "randomly" Stop Working
JimmyWA replied to JimmyWA's topic in Bugs and Problems
I have a track file of this now happening without using air to ground weapons. It happened on my second flight in multiplayer. The track file is 70mb, and I've done a search on the forum but can't find a way to send this to you? The ZIP was 60mb :( -
I’ve had this happen before the last Open Beta update. The fix for me was to go to select another weapon, then reselect the MAV, TMS forward, and then it fired.

Are there any plans to allow DCS to use multiple cores?
JimmyWA replied to MobiSev's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Check out this video which shows similar performance improvements to what I get in VR (I go from an average of 20fps with 1 core to 40fps with All cores in use, with all graphic settings on high, and shadows on low). -
Yes, this is what makes the subject so subjective! If I use 2 cores I get sound issues, yet others get better performance on 1 core, some with 2 cores and others on all cores. It must be very much PC rig dependent. My DCS.exe now either uses 1 core or All by default when I start up after the latest Open Beta update. Very confusing. I did try setting it to use all in the autoexec.luo but it didn’t do anything, so I removed the setting.

[CANNOT REPRODUCE] Uncage and Radar Alt "randomly" Stop Working
JimmyWA replied to JimmyWA's topic in Bugs and Problems
Thank you - how do I upload a large track file to you? -
See Etherbattx’s explanation above regarding DCS using many threads. My DCS.exe now randomly uses either 1 core or All cores and as it has happened straight after the latest open beta update, I would guess DCS has changed something. There is a setting in the autoexec.lua to tell DCS to use all cores but that never worked on my PC.
-
I’m running the latest Open Beta patch. After this patch, for some reason (maybe it’s coincidental and there was a Windows update?) DCS.EXE on my PC sometimes defaults to using All cores, other times just 1. The following YouTube clip shows how to set your PC to use all cores - but be aware it depends on the PC and you will need to experiment. Some are better usin only 2, some All.

After flying around in multiplayer, using the latest Openbeta release, on the Caucuses map, after a few hours I've had this strange problem in the F-18. Suddenly the Radar Altitude won't budge up or down, and I can't uncage the Harms to select the SAM targets. I went into settings, controls and it was registering all my button pushes for the radar and the HARM. I even tried typing "C" to uncage, but it didn't work. The F-18 had not been damaged. I spawned into another F-18, started up, and it all worked fine. This has happened twice now - and as I say, it appears to be quite random.

-
And then - I flew in DCS tonight and the performance was dreadful. I checked, and it was only use one core again! I have no idea why, when every time I started it yesterday (after the update) it defaulted to use all cores - and I restarted it 3 times to test it. Tonight I set it manually to use all cores, and performance was restored. Just shows why IT is a black art!

Are there any plans to allow DCS to use multiple cores?
JimmyWA replied to MobiSev's topic in DCS Core Wish List
After the latest update DCS.exe now defaults (on my PC at least) to use all cores! Thank you ED! -
After the latest update ED appear to have fixed the problem and all cores are now being used by default!
-
So many people quote this. My PC was only using 1 core, and I had terrible stutters and an average frame rate of 20 in VR. I set it to use all cores (tried 2 but caused sound problems) stutters went away and frame rate doubled. ED has fixed the problem in The latest update and DCS now defaults to using all cores. I’m a programmer, and yes, maybe DCS uses only two threads, but at a lower level, the PC can use as many cores as it wants/can - as proven by the increase in performance I’m experiencing.
-
Wasn’t repeating anything. I was letting people know that the issue has been fixed, and not an issue anymore - unless setting all cores to be used causes a problem on your PC (have noticed someone complaining of reduced performance after the latest update).
-
Looks like they have fixed the ALL Core usage with this update! Thank you ED!!! As my PC was using only one core in DCS by default, I've been having to manually set it to use ALL cores every time I start DCS. Doing this doubled my VR frame rates and stopped all stutters. I've been posting about it as much as possible to get the word out there for anyone else it can help: Windows will use all cores by default with most chipset, but not with x99, x299 etc... anything "bigger" than a i7 x700K (ex : 6800K - 7800k or all "x" processors like 5960x). In these cases you have the bug "1 core affinity" / "turbo boost https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3950069#post3950069 After the latest update, when I start DCS - ALL cores are now in use by default.
-
The latest patch has fixed it! Went to set to All cores, and it looks like ED have done it! When I finished DCS I shutdown and started it again, and All cores still enabled - now I don't have to manually set it anymore, and I think it will help the performance for a lot of non technical flyers who might have had this issue now.
