HOTAS Cougar FOxy programming question
Sn8ke_iis replied to Slayer_42's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but that's pretty easy to do through the TARGET GUI. See page 23 in the documentation: https://ts.thrustmaster.com/download/accessories/pc/hotas/software/TARGET/TARGET_User_Manual_ENG.pdf You can set up a press and release. I use the warthog throttle for the P-51 but that's how I did it. Since you are using a modifier layer for the same switch, you might have to assign a new unique keyboard callback manually in the DCS spreadsheet so the "S" key is not locked up for other functions. But if you let off the modifier button and then recenter the switch it should hold. You can also set up a sequence on the opposite sides of the switch to ensure the press is cancelled out with a release before you initiate another press to close the radiator and vice versa, if that makes sense. Perhaps just try an experimental configuration just on that button to see if it works like you want it? -

Nick Grey Hoggit comment on missile FM's "Dear Sir and Community members, many thanks for your support and feedback. Please note that the SD-10 also has WIP issues, especially pertaining to drag, both parasitic and induced. We are finishing the full Flow Dynamics on this and other missiles in order to have a detailed discussion with our good friends at DEKA and HB in the near future. FYI we use both Ansys Fluent and Flow Vision software for our FM calculations for both AC and missiles. In Q1 of 2020, we plan to make available all our CFD calculations, performance graphs and data sets for most of our missiles and AC in DCS. We have set ourselves a hard target of delivering to you the most reliable and precise missile FM and guidance laws in order to put any uncertainty or lack of clarity to bed. This work is being done with the assistance of all our SME's and 'friends' in industry and while not all data is openly available, our aerodynamics and missile specialists will deliver a very scientific report for those of you who wish to cross-examine our calculations and findings in detail. Our goal is to move closer and closer to reality where and when possible and to deliver enhanced combat realism and customer satisfaction. That goes for airframe aerodynamics, engines and systems as well. We know we have a long way to go but we are committed to continuing in this direction with purpose. Once again thanks to you and all our passionate community we hope to achieve a level of excellence which may be up to your expectations. We really appreciate your commitment and devotion to DCS, thank you again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families. Kind regards, Nick" Edit: As requested,

RAM 2x16GB vs 8x8GB.. any suggestions?
Sn8ke_iis replied to sirrah's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
After you build your first PC, you will rarely have to reference manuals. With the major exception being for the motherboard. I've built over a dozen PCs over the years and I always refer to the manual for any quirks and unique features of the board as these can vary a lot from vendor to vendor and chipset to chipset. My last 3 builds have been all on ASUS motherboards but things like error codes, CMOS, BIOS recovery, and overclocking features have all varied. Make sure you keep it handy. If you lose it or if it's more convenient you can usually pull up a PDF for it from the vendor's website as well. Bitmaster helps a lot of people on these boards and he's looking out for your best interests when he advises to learn these things. It will pay dividends in the future and prevent expensive mistakes. -

Try different configurations on PC Parts Picker. https://pcpartpicker.com/ They even have a lot of suggested builds for under your budget. It's best to stay brand agnostic and look at the costs and price/performance with objective benchmarks. People tend to be biased towards brands they've already purchased or think are cool or popular. AMD is pretty hard to beat right now for bang for buck but go with what you can get the best price on in your area and what is actually in stock. Vendors scalp parts they are low on and know are popular. The DCS engine likes fast single thread performance of the CPU. Get the fastest CPU/Mobo combo you can afford. Multiple cores come in handy for background programs like TrackIR, recording, streaming, and miscellaneous software apps. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html Gamer's Nexus best of 2019 CPUs Best overall: AMD 3600 Best gaming: Intel 9900K -

Yes, I already know that, thanks. I don't restrict DCS to 2 or 3 cores. I over clock the 2 best cores in BIOS with the 2 core ratio feature of ASUS BIOS and Windows take care of the rest. Please post some valid benchmarks and videos showing DCS performing better with your autoexec.cfg and a 10% boost. DCS does not use multithreading. Multithreading is using 2 logical calculation threads within one physical core. DCS does not do that. Hopefully with the Vulkun build it will. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multithreading_(computer_architecture) -
Windows help for noob
Sn8ke_iis replied to Mr. Big.Biggs's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
What Big Newy said. You can reinstall with the option to keep your programs and apps. It's a good idea to do it every 6-12 months anyway. It comes in handy for trouble shooting and to start from a clean slate for a fresh baseline. There's so much going on under the hood in Windows and the SaaS model that no one person can keep track of it all. Even Nvidia can be sneaky about bloatware but I wouldn't spend too much time trying to keep track of it all. I would only worry if something egregious shows in the task manager like lots of memory usage. When I installed the Adobe Suite it had a process that was always checking for a current license via internet even after I uninstalled it and switched to Blender so I 86'd that but I tend to leave the other stuff alone. -

No worries, Bit. Apologies for coming off like a butt hole. I've just read so many posts and threads by people new to the hobby who get confused by this stuff and contradictory info. If I ever actually have the time I want to start a YT channel that focuses on benchmarking flight sims since no one else has yet. The best I could come up with for DCS was the IA Free Flight on the Caucasus with the T-51/Su-25. But still so many variables, it's hard to establish a one size fits all baseline. I saw some people using a .trk for some tests, but that's not really valid due to playback issues and you are watching a prerecorded .trk and not playing in real time. Plus people could always fudge the numbers due to ego issues. I wish ED would put out a benchmark integrated with the core engine so we could run valid tests but I know that's not a priority. -

Maybe? The defect that was commonly reported online - besides no image - was the "space invaders" static in the image, which per Steve from Gamer's Nexus is associated with the VRAM. VRM is definitely important too. Nvidia was always very vague about the QA "test escapes" and which subcontractor or vendor was the issue. There's Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, and other big vendors. You have to take the cooling solution off and look at the codes to be sure what you got. Mine are under waterblocks. I'm not taking those off to see what I got otherwise I'd share. Have I mentioned how much like your hardware signature? Well played sir... -
Test: Setting CPU Affinity
Sn8ke_iis replied to SkateZilla's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have read through the thread. The guy I was quoting obviously didn't. I don't set core affinity in Windows or Process Lasso and never said anything about doing so. I set a 2 core ratio overclock in BIOS when playing DCS and then Windows and Process Lasso take care of the rest automatically. The guy I was quoting was putting out wrong information about hyperthreading, number of cores, and stability. And Process Lasso works very well for people who don't want to download autoexec.cfg files from random people in a forum. This stuff is complex enough without confusing the issue for new players. In any given chip there will always be cores that can run faster. I have a top 20 score in the world on 3dMark using Process Lasso and am in the 99th percentile of scores on my current rig so I'll go with my own experience and the technical expertise of people who actually know what they are talking about over random people on a forum. The fact remains that DCS does not use more than 2 cores and does not use hyperthreading. Other background and streaming programs might, but not DCS. Not yet anyway. That hasn't changed since this thread started. People are more than capable of using their own judgment, but you need to have correct information to do that. -

I'll promote whatever I think is good software, get over yourself, it's free donation ware. Your information is wrong about number of cores and hyperthreading. I've never had any stability issues with it. -

Did you turn off the power saving features in the Windows GUI? You want to make sure that you are not on "balanced" in the advanced power settings. You want to set it to "high performance". Process Lasso works really well and it's much more convenient than regedits. -

Sounds like it might just be a loose wire then, especially if you've flipped it back and forth for several years. Good luck! -

What's a common failure to these cards? You said it's not the power supply and not the fans so what's a common failure? It's not common at all, it's just bad luck. It's usually user error or bad QA. I've lost count of all the people I've seen in overclock forums who start playing around with the voltages and fry their cards. -

Check with Sokol1_br. He has a lot of good posts and threads about the internals of the warthog. I think it's a pretty generic 3 way toggle switch that can be soldered in. I've only opened up the Cougar throttle so I can't be much help.
