Monstertech and Heavy Duty Velcro :)

The flap switch and autopilot switch for example have three position states that can all send a keyboard press or joystick button press to your PC. With Target you can fully model those position states. The default DCS system can't assign the 3 way switches unless something has changed recently and I wasn't aware. Edit: If you have A-10C module they are modeled properly by default with the Warthog. I just double checked, the default DCS system still only recognizes joystick button 22 and 23 and 27, 28 for the flap and autopilot switch respectively. With TARGET you can emulate all the DX joystick buttons and hat switch that Windows can handle as well as any combination of keyboard presses you can think of with the virtual keyboard. Personally I don't find TARGET that difficult to use, it's just a standard point and click GUI, it's very intuitive. It even shows you a little picture of the stick and throttle and you can click on the button you want to assign.
-
If you want to use the switches in all their position states and don't want to learn LUA scripts you can just use TARGET. It has a nice easy to use GUI where you point and click and use standard pull down/drill down menus. That being said, after you get comfortable with the GUI, TARGET scripts are a good intro to learn basic code syntax. The TARGET interface will do it all for you though.

Upgrading cpu/mb: 3900x or 9900k?
Sn8ke_iis replied to Rossterman's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
For those planning new builds this season. As Bit already mentioned just because you want a processor does not mean said processor/mb/GPU is in stock at a reasonable price. If you have your heart set on building something over the holidays have a backup plan. Until someone does some serious benchmarks to compare, the new AMD processors should match Intel within a frame or two or within the margin of error is my best guess. It's not really a matter of opinion or which company you are partial to, the single thread benchmarks speak for themselves. But the price performance ratio gets all thrown out of whack if vendors start scalping stuff they know is popular. I've seen prices raised in realtime based on demand. If you buy an overpriced AMD motherboard that's more than you actually need, that also throws off the price performance savings of the CPU. For DCS all you need is a $100 - $150 ITX motherboard unless you want to do SLI or need expansion slots (you don't). In general this the best time to buy components but there are always bottleneck components you will need to have a working computer like the CPU. Best course of action might be to decide on a build and collect the parts over time when they are at their best price and vendors know demand has subsided. If you get excited to play with a new toy by a certain emotional deadline you'll pay more $$$. -
Be sure to check out Chuck's guides as a previous poster mentioned. Even though it's geared toward Cessnas and initial civilian ratings check out Embry Riddle's flight training channel. Better to learn the correct fundamentals now then have to unlearn bad habits later. For the first flight of the day, I will go through the checklist and realistic start up procedure. After that just use the autostart feature or play missions where you start hot on the runway. USAF/USN training puts a lot of emphasis and time on formation flying/precision navigation/emergency procedures. You can cheat on the emergency procedures with the pause button but the other two are worth the time investment. Happy flyin'

GTX2080ti -- Is it worth paying the premium ?.
Sn8ke_iis replied to Gunnergolly's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Anytime you use a known good power supply for troubleshooting purposes, don't mix and match power cables from different power supplies, even from the same vendor. They are not wired to a standard on the power supply side, only the motherboard side. The polarities might have been reversed. It wouldn't be first time somebody has fried an SSD like that. Not that I would know anything about that...:music_whistling: -
Is this still not fixed? I didn't see it in the changelog. I'm starting to actually have time to learn AMRAAMs and the radar/IFF, it would be nice if they got this right so we didn't have to rely on workarounds in the TUSBA software and/or map the keyboard callbacks.
-
I use the TUSBA from Realsimulator on mine. The bundled software has been very useful for the cursor switch which you can set to emulate keystrokes at specific ranges of the axis, i.e. radar cursor down, up, etc. It makes the radar cursor much more precise and accurate than the axis. I tried to use a similar method for the ANT ELEV Knob pot but it was too janky and I had to open it up, clean it, and reposition per the tutorial on the flyfoxy website. I believe you can use an equivalent in CCP and TARGET but since I started using the TUSBA it seems bricked to Windows without it. I was hoping to use the Cougar throttle for a TARGET profile but I'm stuck using a profile just for the stick. Tried reflashing the firmware and registry edits to no avail. But it works fine with TUSBA. I've honestly used most of my spare time troubleshooting and fixing my Cougar since the Viper released. Only recently got it dialed in with my profile where I can enjoy flying without stopping to tune the layout. I like having the realistic throttle but TM, Winwing, or Realsim need to put out a new throttle. Getting the detentes right and all the pot issues has been very tedious and I like to tinker.

Looking to develop a TARGET profile for F-16
Sn8ke_iis replied to AKA_Clutter's topic in Thrustmaster
TARGET has it's own GUI as has for some time. That guy's scripts are unnecessarily complex and you have to download a separate GUI. Better to just do it yourself in the TARGET GUI and tweak the scripts as needed. It's pretty simple actually. You will actually learn the controls and systems that way too. I have a standard layout for views, comms, kneeboard, track IR/VR center etc. in a layer that I use on all aircraft. It actually expedites jumping in and learning a new module. Just set the axis and go. You can alt tab over into TARGET and add button presses as needed as you train and learn the functions. It aids retention. The TARGET GUI is also much more intuitive than DCS's native spreadsheet layout. If you have trouble learning the TARGET GUI you are going to have trouble learning avionics and systems in DCS in general. -
GTX2080ti -- Is it worth paying the premium ?.
Sn8ke_iis replied to Gunnergolly's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If you can reliably sell your used stuff, it makes upgrades a lot easier. That being said, I'd just wait until next summer. I'm happy enjoying the Reverb with a 2080 Ti but the grass is always greener. Next summer, you'll have the choice of a new Ampere card from Nvidia, a used 2080 Ti, or whatever AMD can put out by then. If you can get a good deal this build season and then sell it later it makes it more worth it. I just looked at EVGA's website, prices haven't really come down at all from a year ago, if anything they are +$50-$100 from a year ago. And availability is still kind of spotty. When I bought mine, the EVGA store wasn't charging sales tax. At least in my state, I think they legally have to now. It's a good time for CPU's and RAM. I wish I had some more definitive benchmarks to show you. I guess it depends how much some settings and graphics perks are to you. But I would lean toward probably not worth it. There is always something new and shiny right around the corner. According to the diagnostic tool that comes with WMR/Reverb I'm mostly CPU limited with the higher shadow and textures that I like in VR. -
If you guys own the Cougar Throttle, the potentiometer for the ANT elevation knob has known issues. It might be your hardware. I had to do some maintenance on mine. Mine was fine last time I used it with F@$@#$. It gets knocked out of alignment really easily. http://cougar.flyfoxy.com/mods.php#antpot

OK, that image is not captured in VR. That is a screenshot from a 2D screen. I can't explain it any clearer than that. Images for VR are put through a barrel distortion warping process. Then the the lenses on the VR headset in combination with your bifocal vision means your brain interprets the image as 3 dimensional. It is in no way distorted. VR does not look like that. Ever.
-
Do you know how VR works? That's a 2D screenshot of one eye from your flat screen. It doesn't look like that in VR even with one eye closed. Please stop putting out bad information. Thanks
-
I had this issue playing in TrackIR on my big screen with all the modules. The previous poster was correct. It's from rolling out a 3d image on to a 2d flat screen. In VR the sides of the HUD are straight no matter what the zoom or FOV.

Cannot turn on or change brightness of interior lighting (VR)
Sn8ke_iis replied to MurderOne's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Are you using the keybinds or your mouse pointer? I use the mouse in VR and you can spin all the rotary dials on the lighting panel and all work. Looks really good in fact. So far the cockpit is the best part for me. Make sure you start DCS from within your headset. That bypasses a lot of mouse pointer issues. -
[NOT ACCRUATE STATEMENT] thrust-to-weight ratio is below 1
Sn8ke_iis replied to prof_laser's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
OP, I get what you are saying and that it might be counter-intuitive. I think you are confusing the physics of a rocket engine with an air breathing jet engine. The compressor blades can't produce the thrust you want at that altitude and airspeed. It won't be constant like a rocket. For the effect I think you are looking for: take off, clean up the gear, accelerate to about 350 or so at normal take-off 8-12 degrees. Then you can kick on the burners, give them a couple seconds to ignite and the nozzles to position properly, then pull back to 60+ degrees and she will climb like a rocket. :pilotfly: -
The cockpit is cozy in VR but looks amazing, especially the HUD. Love the bubble canopy with no mirrors. Go to the external views and pull some lower speed, high AOA turns, the vortices and wing vapor look incredible. You get visible cockpit shake cues for stall buffet like the F-14 too. Flight model feels really good at corner speed and lower. I bought the HP Reverb for this. Worth every penny.
-
That will come in handy actually. That's way more convenient than what I suggested. I've had the same issue where I don't want to spend too much time reading text in VR.
-
You can manually edit the options.lua file in a text editor or just delete it. That should reset all the graphics options. In the text editor you could turn the VR setting from "true" to "false" and then use your 2d screen like normal to change any settings. It's a lot of code syntax but it's not too difficult to read.

Stuttering in relationship with TrackIR/Windows10/DCS 2.5
Sn8ke_iis replied to Repsol2k's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Calling everything stutter could be really confusing for noobs. I wouldn't define a frame rate drop as stutter even though that term could be loosely applied to anything that is not smooth. If you fly low over a city or trees and the frame rate drops that's normal. A good method I used before I got my VR was tune to 60 with mirrors. If you came to a complex area, flip up the mirrors and it gave you a nice cushion to maintain 60fps with high settings. Once you are back out over the desert or ocean you can flip the mirrors back down. Microstutter, stutter, hitching, and frame rate drops are the terms that I see used most often. There is no definitive source for the nomenclature. Putting the frame rate and frame time graphs up in Afterburner are the best way to see it without thinking you are going crazy or placebo effect. The small variations in frame times are obvious in the graph. If the frame time graph is smooth the experience is smooth. 60 frames/second = 16.6 ms frame time The per second average can mask lots of variation in frame time and still read a constant 60 fps. Causes of stutter/microstutter I've seen on my machines include controller conflict, power settings, background programs, interpolations settings on my panel, and not locking frame rate to 60fps expecting TrackIR to work with G-sync/Freesync/VRR on high frame rate monitors. They all had a distinct visual signature and frame time graph. Unfortunately there are a lot of noobs coming into DCS expecting their shiny new G sync or free sync monitor to work with TrackIR and it won't and they waste a lot of time and get frustrated chasing gremlins. -
I got it unpacked and up and running. If I try to run a repair, run the updater, download a module, and the daily update check when I run DCS all cause the timeout error without my VPN connected. Hope this helps autoupdate_log.zip
-
Comcast ISP, Had to use VPN I was getting the updater timeout error. I have Comcast and saw your post. So I connected through a VPN and it's downloading now. Is Comcast interfering with your Torrent client in some way? Thanks for the heads up btw, I was starting to get frustrated. I've never had this persistent error before.

Appeal for calm in the DCS F-16 community
Sn8ke_iis replied to RaceFuel85's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I was more referring to things like business practices, insulting people for their national identity etc. I appreciate people who are direct. I'm the same way. Two of my professors were Russian. Some of the most brilliant mathematicians I've ever met. One was working on a textbook for Game Theory. Probably not what you think, it's related to economics, but the guy was absolutely brilliant. And he spoke 3 languages, could code, etc.. Fun fact, the math that US stealth technology is based on is derived from Russian mathematical theory. Ufimsetv? I'm sure I spelled it wrong. -
No, no, no. This is all wrong. DCS: F-16C Lawndart :)
