  1. Actually, craters on Earth will often last a lot longer than that. The impact crater in photo 12) is in the hundred million year range, IIRC. The point of photo 12) was to try to confuse you into saying "Mars" because wind blown dust is in much evidence in that photo, and it might be thought that the crater's weathered appearance is due to wind erosion.
  2. Kinda spoils the game if you give away answers that are obviously right, instead of just "Earth" or "Mars" :( Ok, these were the answers: 1) Earth 2) Mars 3) Mars 4) Earth 5) Earth 6) Mars 7) Earth 8) Mars 9) Earth 10) Earth 11) BOTH! Well, "Mars" is an acceptable answer too. This is a photo of Earth, taken from the surface of Mars, and what you would see with your naked eye looking up. Because Earth is interior to the Sun from Mars, it's an evening/morning "star". Yes, that "star" at the photo's upper center is Earth. In fact, if you examine the photo closely, you can even see the Moon- the Moon is that faint blip just below Earth. 12) Earth 13) Mars I tried to be a little tricky, especially on the last two photos. Photo 12) is an impact crater on Earth that seems to be heavily eroded, but it's not possible to tell the erosion type- in fact, wind-blown dust is much in evidence in the photo. Photo 13) is of a crater wall on Mars that appears to have suffered from water erosion in the very recent past, a very intriguing possibility. Note how the "water" (if that's what it was) didn't seem to make it all the way to the bottom before disappearing... kinda what you would expect if it was simultaneously boiling, freezing, and sublimating.
  3. Just don't try switching the source back to "internet", you'll CTD immediately... at least, I do. EDIT: And... worse news yet, I keep getting "Connection interrupted" every time I try a direct IP connection :(
  4. THANK YOU! With this "solution", however, I still CTD upon trying to display the server list by selecting "Internet". So it's the server list that contains the problem. As long as I keep it on "LAN" or "History", I'm fine, and can directly connect via IP. But this narrows down where the problem lies a bit, doesn't it? Thanks again. Apparently, I gave you rep once a few decades ago, so I can't + rep you for your contribution :( EDIT: CRAP! I keep getting "Connection Interrupted" when I try a direct IP connection. So maybe this isn't much of a work-around after all?
  5. I'll jump onto the pile :D 2:00? Sorry, you lost me at 0:01.
  6. The problem with hypersonic passenger transport is that current jets aren't bad at all, and are a whole lot cheaper and reliable. For cross-country flights, there's really not much need to ever get rid of the subsonic transport. And the internet further reduces the need to travel intercontinentally. It's not applications in hypersonic passenger transport that are exciting, what would be exciting is if the technology could be applied to make space very cheap to access. If someone ever perfects something like this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylon_(spacecraft) then there will be a massive boom in space exploration/space utilization. One of the biggest problems is just getting your hardware out of Earth's atmosphere and into orbit. Yes, we can do it reliably now, but it's extremely costly.
  7. Still the same situation as last update: I'd love to make it, but there is something preventing me from doing it. Sorry, but I can't elaborate more than that. I still fully intend to create the AFAC menu system, but it's out of my control when this will be. I sure hope it's as soon as possible. On a side note, I worry about whether anyone will ever figure out how to use the AFAC system once it does exist. I never realized how hard typing "-sol" and "-stl" into chat would be for some people- we're not talking just about people who don't read the briefing. If that was the only problem, there wouldn't be much of a problem at all. No, we're also talking about how chat is like a different keystroke for every single aircraft. Half the people I talk to don't even know how to send a chat message anymore, it's gotten so confusing. And of course, then there's the multi montior folks who can't see chat/trigger text/the UI. In my squad, when I ask if people are using the options list, 50% of folks don't know the keystroke to chat any more, 20% of them can't see chat messages/trigger text/both due to multimontior. Of the remaining 30%, only one third of them will have read the briefing. (Though, there is a mitigating circumstance there- the mission I have been using is designed to run on a dedicated server, and generally, in the past, the briefing for missions run on the server has been relatively unimportant). So if I include options items into the mission, and don't actually verbally tell people they exist and give them a quick tutorial on how to use it, maybe one in ten folks is able to figure it out/use it for themselves, at least at first. Of course, the solution is just to use it more, so that the 80% of people who can actually use the feature, learn how to use the feature :) Also, I tell everyone to just rebind chat message to the "tab" key on every aircraft. It's not like the tab key is used for anything. Hopefully, TARS comes back soon, and everyone will be forced to rebind their chat key to something memorable ("hey, what channel are you on?").
  8. Not to mention, there's no law of physics saying that a hypersonic space plane, that takes off and lands off a conventional runway, is impossible. In fact, a lot of aeronautical engineers think it IS possible, there are many working towards the goal, and this research greatly advances this concept. If such a technology is perfected, it could make access to space very cheap. The extreme cost of launching stuff into orbit is mostly what is preventing us from expanding more into space. As the human population continues to grow, we'll run shorter and shorter in resources. It's inevitable. If the population keeps growing, eventually we'll have to start trucking stuff in from space. So this research could potentially help needy people a lot more than even more free handouts.
  9. But what KIND of erosion is it? Those erosion marks appear to go uphill... doesn't look like water erosion to me... :D
  10. ?? I don't follow
  11. I don't want to give the wrong impression that there is NO possible work-around to the issue, and that it is certain that you simply have to wait the problem out. It's certainly possible there IS a solution to the problem, because I don't know personally know what the problem is that causes this issue. So by all means, please keep looking for a solution, and if you think you have a real working solution, and you have tested it multiple times, I'd LOVE to hear about it. It's just that all the supposed solutions I have seen have almost certainly been the result of coincidence.
  12. OK, I wasted some time, and put together a little game. You think you know your own planet? Let's see. (I gave away two of the answers a few posts ago, but I'll post them anyway :) Consider them freebies) Mars or Earth? Expand the spoiler below to view the 13 images, and reply which you think is Earth, and which you think is Mars. I'll give answers later (assuming people actually "play").
  13. Yea, the ME has a lot of unwritten or unclear rules you just have to figure out for yourself with experiments. These rules make the ME a bit trickier to deal with. For example, here's some more I can think of: -Unactivated units are alive -Deactivated units are dead -UNIT OUTSIDE ZONE functions as (UNIT ALIVE AND OUTSIDE ZONE) OR UNIT DEAD -ONCE, SWITCHED, CONTINUOUS trigger types are all continuously evaluated (unless tied to an event), but conditionally (based on trigger type) executed -Because of continuous evaluation of all other trigger types, it is often best to use the RANDOM condition with the MISSION START trigger type, which is only evaluated a single time -All flags are initialized at mission start to FALSE -SWITCHED -> (False condition) will not work at mission start, as the previous value of the condition was non-existent.
  14. Next time, after it happens, please upload C:\Users\<Your Account Name>\Saved Games\DCS\Logs\me.log to this topic, here in the forums. That is the most likely method of determining what your problem is (but certainly, no guarantee of figuring out the issue). I also have never ever heard of anything like this. When you upload this, please send me a private message so I know about it, there are too many forum sections for me to monitor them all.
  15. Actually, I believe what's so dangerous about depleted uranium is its chemical toxicity, not its slight radioactivity. I think it's a lot worse than lead. At least, people keep making a big fuss about it. Then again, people make big fusses about utterly irrelevant things all the time, so I might just be getting the wrong impression.
  16. Last I checked, it's 2012. A year isn't enough time to vote?
  17. Yea, I use the mouse to control the JTAC bino view. I donno why it wouldn't work for you. Maybe you accidentally unbound it?
  18. I started a poll here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=93100 However, who knows how accurate it will really be. I'm not fool enough to think that polls on these forums represent an unbiased sample... for example, I suspect folks who don't really care about the effect will be less inclined to take the time to vote.

  20. A lot of folks, including myself, find this feature irritating. I would think that this would be reason enough to request a change? It is said that a keystroke or two input will stop the effect, and yet, I find that I cannot stop this effect from happening many or most of the times, despite me scrolling the hell out of my zoom axis rotary. I usually have to sit there and wait the whole duration. (Is it really just three seconds?! Seems more like 5 to 6 to me. Maybe because phenomenon that are annoying subjectively take longer to end?) It's not like this is high priority or even normal priority. It is a short effect, whatever the length of it is. However, if the time is ever found to address it, then why not make the game as minimally annoying as possible? In this case, the only real change that is required to please everyone is simply to add an extra option under the Options->Misc. tab: [ ] "Camera zoom at mission start" It's a minor overall functionality change, but I wouldn't know if implementing such a change would be worth the development time it would take to add it in.
  21. "Connection Interrupted" is the only message returned now due to a bug. So if you enter the wrong password, or are banned, or even, if the game thinks you are on the wrong version, you will see the same message, "connection interrupted".
  22. Because Servman has not been updated for DCS World, and because there is a need for such a tool in the squad I am in, I am considering some simple server administration tools for Slmodv6.3. Basically, I'm thinking of allowing Slmod to also function as "Servman lite". Servman is geared more towards dedicated public servers, while the admin tools that I am thinking of would be geared more towards private squadron servers, or non-dedicated public servers (where the admin/admins are always present). Here is what I am thinking of right now: -admin menu: "-admin" or "-admin help": shows listing of -admin commands "-admin add <playername>": add playername to the list of admins "-admin remove <playername>": remove playername from the list of admins "-admin ban <playername>": bans a player by IP and UCID "-admin unban <playername>": unban a player (there are some questions of how to handle name conflicts, I have to think on that one) "-admin pause": pause the mission. "-admin unpause": unpause the mission. "-admin load <mission name>": loads mission; directory could be included in <mission name> too. Default and highest allowed working directory would be /Saved Games/DCS. "-admin set dir <directory>": sets the current working directory from which missions are loaded (highest allowed directory would be /Saved Games/DCS). "-admin view dir": views the contents of the current working directory from which missions are loaded (highest allowed directory would be /Saved Games/DCS). Anyway, I mention all this because I'm curious if anyone has any feedback on this idea. Bad? Good? Waste of my time? Good idea and you have suggestions for more/different functionality? Again, I haven't started on this, it's just at the conceptual stage at this moment. I know that right now, I feel that an integrated ban feature into Slmod would, at least, probably be a nice addition, and it's VERY easy to add that. The load mission kinds of features would be more time consuming, but still very doable.
  23. Agreed. As far as I know, the only real "fix" to the crash on Master Server connect problem is to wait it out :( All the purported "fixes" for CTD on Master Server connect I have seen are the result of timing- the problem happened to independently resolve itself while the person was messing around, doing whatever "fix" they claim helped the issue. For example, the first time CTD on Master Server connect happened to me, I tried deleting my network.cfg and network.vault or whatever. It didn't help. Then I restarted my computer, and it "fixed" the problem. However, that only worked for me one time. There was no causative relation between my restarting my computer and the CTD on Master Server connect problem being resolved. Just lucky timing. It would be helpful if you do not post your "fix" for CTD on Master Server connect unless a) It works MORE THAN ONCE OR TWICE, or: b) It resolves the issue, while other people in your squad keep having it. It may be that someone has already posted something we can do as clients to prevent or fix the CTD on Master Server connect, but with all the false "solutions" out there, it's impossible to know.
  24. Not a bad image today... Except for the sky, that could be Earth: ^^ Atacama desert Heck, even the Atacama desert could have a dusty orange sky on a day with a dust storm.
