You might, at best, tickle a MBT with the 30mm. Best case, if the damage model is good, you may damage its optics and save yourself from being hit by a 120mm HE round. AT rockets at range. That the way to do it. Keep the gun for APCs and trucks.

As much as I'd like to see other aircraft in this sim, some people clear underestimate the amount of work it requires. Just think about it this way... it took years to make the black shark alone. The idea that a lot or even most of the "work" is already there is pointless. In every project of this sort, the base code can easily be reused. It's always the last 10% of the content that takes 90% of the work time and resources.

Not yet. As the patch isn't ready yet and the DVDs are most likely already pressed, unless there's some magic I don't understand, I doubt the patch will be included :music_whistling:

That's really strange... especially in regions with mountains. That means you have to calculate the mountain top elevation and ceilings with reference to your field elevation? I'm not even sure I can do that on my CR-3. I'll have to figure out a way to quickly do the conversion on the fly. Any hints?

I'm pretty sure windmill starts are not possible in Black Shark. Airflow through the turbine is not enough to make it turn and the compressor turbine and power turbine are not coupled. I do not know if it's an accurate representation (but I really doubt you get enough wind speed to start a turboshaft engine anyways), but it doesn't work in the simulator... The key to remember is that, although it's a turbine, it's not a jet engine or a turbofan engine.

I feel so silly. I paid quake 3 arena $60 back then. I could buy it for $5.99 now. ;) No, seriously, I don't feel bad about this. It won't include any more documentation AND we got it way faster. Early adopters always pay a premium, regardless if it's a game or hardware. That's nothing new. On the other hand, If you were not sure about BS because of the price tag, now you know you just have to wait a few months to get a better price... obviously.

So you have to start the APU, crank the stopped engine, start the engine, shut the APU off, or something along those lines?
-
I also wondered about the in-flight engine restart procedure. This diagram speaks for itself Right engine impingement starter. Right engine TV3-117VMA. Main gearbox. Left engine TV3-117VMA. Left engine impingement starter. Intermediate gearbox. APU. APU bleed air pipeline. Right generator. Turbine drive. Left generator. Input drive shaft. source: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?lang=en&end_pos=1630

Question: It may sound like a strange question, but why do you need a demo? Do you need it because you want to play the game and can't afford the full game (seen that often)? Do you fear your hardware won't support the simulator? Do you fear the realism/difficulty level or, on the contrary, the sim to be too arcadish? Why do you need a demo? I can't answer for a demo availability, but I can try to answer your questions and fears. Many other forum members may help. Also, the forum admins may be interested to know why you want a demo so bad. That may help them to focus their marketing.

A simple alternative to a kneeboard (it can be difficult depending on the hardware configuration), would be a small pad with a clip. That combined with stand to hold paper pages (can be found in any office supply stores) can be very useful. I use a similar setup for approach and route plates. It's my replacement for not being able to clip stuff on a yoke.
-
I prefer to use a real kneeboard rather than a virtual one. I think it's way better than a virtual one and fairly easy to implement :P That said, I think it would be very nice to be able to print out missing briefings, maps and recon photos. -- As for a virtual kneeboard, if you have a second monitor, you could have your checklists and maps open there. I prefer to use my second monitor for Shkval and ABRIS AMMS.

That is very interesting. Thnak you very much :)

I don't know. Chibawang. Except the smoking part (:p) that's pretty much how the game looks on my side.

- Make sure the laser enable switch is at standby on the targeting system panel. - To get the "c", make sure you lock on target [enter], that the weapon is correctly selected, that the targeting system is in auto mode (not gunsight), that the weapon systems are powered. If you are using the vickrs, make sure the missile reticule overlaps with the target on the HUD. Master Arm must be enable, of course (I still forget it sometimes hehe :P). My first bet would be that you did not set the laser to standby or use the lock target button [enter]. I really doubt you are affected by the bugs mentioned here. Suggested reading: Chapter 7 of the Pilot Manual [Combat Employment] Page 7-4 for general stuff you need to do Page 7-11 to 7-13 for weapon system preparation prior to use Page 7-14 for basic target locking (but it does not specify to press the lock target button. that is said on page 7-16 [ATGM Employment]). Good reading.

Detecting enemies; Labels-on to easy, Labels-Off to hard
geogob replied to eV1Te's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Well what you describe here as being in game, I could say about exactly the same about an aircraft moving towards you in real life. Those are the hardest to spot because they don't move in your field of view. We use to say that nothing looks more like another aircraft moving towards you than a bug on your windshield. -
Agreed. You hardly ever look at the outside temperature gauge to determine if you need to engage deicing systems. Furthermore, temperature alone is not an indicator of icing conditions. Here, we often fly at temperatures well below -15°C on aircraft that are not equipped with deicing equipment. Avoiding icing conditions is crucial and the temperature is really not a good indicator. I don't think the icing model goes that far in DCS (following previous statements about possible future upgrades of the model). On the piper cherokee, I found that the best use for the outside air temperature indicator is actually to look at the probe "pitot" to watch for ice buildups :P

Is it a visa debit card or a credit card? I think the identification number sequences are different. That may be the problem.

I'm running a QX9650 on an Asus maximus formula. I had problems with ram timings. The crucial modules I had were probably borderline and as they got older, the timings moved beyond the acceptable limit. Three sets of 4 modules stoped working at after 6 months running time. I finally changed for corsair modules. It has lasted longer. Regardless of what you do, I suggest carefully choosing RAM modules for your rig.

Deployment: Dusk (CAUTION!! SPOILERS!)
geogob replied to Buznee's topic in User Created Missions General
If you want a recipe, it's fairly easy. But I honestly suggest you keep trying by yourself. Myself, I had to redo the mission quite a few times, but that only because my laser failed to work properly every time :( SPOILERS Below. Do not read. :music_whistling: Take the following load: - 12 x Vihkrs - anything you like (I recommend AT munition dispensers or gun pods) Also, I recommend changing the HMS to the Night Vision. I could be fairly dark when you fly back and it might prove prudent to have NV to navigate in the valleys. Proceed as planed: - Fly ingress path. - After the last peak is passed, instead of following the planned route exactly, I fly down the valley to avoid being in SAM radar line of sight. I fly over the reservoir down in the valley and wait for the SEAD to shoot down the SAM sites. - Once the go is given, move in just into Vickers range. Avoid getting too close. - Shoot down the Shilkas first. Should be about 3. Now you can move a bit closer. Be careful as they could be ground troops with AA. - Shoot down the tanks and the BMPs with the Vickers. If you don't have enough Vickers, first shoot down the tanks, than the BMPs. Use HE or AT guns at 4 km to take down the last BMPs. Don't worry about the BMPs at the base gates and corners. You can shoot them down with the gun as you move closer. Don't waste missiles on them. Use the guns to destroy all the trucks, jeeps and mobile artillery. If you have gun pods or bomb dispensers, use them on the denser vehicule groups. Remember, always engage from as far away as possible. Also, don't make too long gun bursts. One HE round is often enough to destroy a truck. Don't waste your ammo. For some reason, the AI is completely blind in this map. I bet its the same reason the shkval won't lock on anything. If that happens, fire the vickrs without a lock, but make sure you keep the tracking gate on target. I think you are required to destroy all vehicles within the base to achieve 100%. -
Detecting enemies; Labels-on to easy, Labels-Off to hard
geogob replied to eV1Te's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I really do not agree with you here. While flying with friends, we often have fun trying to spot specific things on the ground and identifying them. Also, we often have to search and spot for other air traffic. I can assure you that trying to spot a low flying helicopter is really not an easy task in real life... and it has nav lights and beacon running. Same with ground objects... it's nearly impossible, especially and the typical engagement range of the Ka-50. I bet it takes real combat pilots a lot of training to reach efficient target spotting and identification skills. While I play this little spotting game in real life, the targets I'm trying to spot are not hidding. They are not covered with camo patterns. Spotting targets is much more easier in DCS than in real life, regardless of the settings. I am no combat pilot, but I'll be really surprised if anyone confirms that is not the case. -
Registering on the website is free. The simulator is not. You did buy the game, right? If so, you should see the serial number on the purchase page (where you bought it - as indicated above). Of course, you have to register (sign up) on the website to buy the game (and receive your serial number).

Not a huge problem and, by far, not a priority one. Just for fun, on a level I was playing around with I put a cloud cover with a ceiling at 1000 and a thickness of 300. Density was maximum. When I flew over the top (OTT), the cloud textures where wrong. I could see wavy patterns in them. I tried to take a screenshot, but it crashed the engine. I think DCS doesn't like my windowed-multi-screen configuration. If desired, I'll try to post a fraps screenshot or a track. Which ever is more helpful. But don't waste too much time on this one... I don't see flying OTT a priority with this sim really :P But it could become important with the addition of other aircrafts. Right now, the cloud top doesn't look very good (that, appart from the wavy texture problem).

Working in the field of military R&D, I can tell you that you are so close to the truth that it's probably starting to burn :megalol: I can't tell how often I seen analysis like this one. The KISS approach is very popular in the military... both in the designs and in the methods of design ;)

I hate you. I've been trying to do that for days without success :P ps. no I don't really hate you ;) Nice to see what a Real Life™ pilot thinks of this sim.
