Seeming lack of power despite instrument indications
SMH replied to SMH's topic in Bugs and Problems
I would hope not. That makes no sense. Or... what... the engine is becoming fuel starved when the turbo is operating? It didn't feel like that. It felt like it was the turbo surging the engine, not the other way around. Will see if I can reproduce it and get a track. -
No, the waste gates bypass the exhaust before it ever goes down the pipes to the turbo in the rear. It would appear that some amount of exhaust (and sound?) always leaks through though.

It wasn't that low when I recorded it. I recorded video of the original flight too but unfortunately I just deleted it as it seemed the track was sufficient. -
Okay, thanks. How does 100% of the sound come out the turbo when most of the exhaust doesn't?
-
If you can't find them, why should we be able to?
-
Easy to hear. And note that the exhaust is coming out of the waste gates at the front, not the turbocharger in the rear. This would be true during startup regardless of whether the turbo is operational or not. (I hear backfiring coming from behind the cockpit at all times.)

And doesn't it always make backfire sounds from the rear? (Even when it shouldn't because the turbo is completely off?) Mine does. -

It's not the MP or RPM that are low. Just my airspeed and climb rate. It's like there's phantom drag. It also seems to improve when I lower the gear and flaps to try to land. Suddenly I start *gaining* speed! Almost like the drag effect of raising the flaps and/or gear gets reversed somehow. -
When you turn the compass light dial, instead of a light coming on that flat black disk at the top of the compass rotates correspondingly.

Realism. I don't use that baby stuff. (And I am not aware of any DCS plane that models the difference between the two magneto banks. We don't see the RPM drop we should when switching to a single bank in any plane. Anyway, both is the proper procedure for startup.) -

I ran a Repair after installing this week's 2.5.6.50792 update too. (This also happened to me a few times on last week's build that debuted the P-47, including this same mission.) -

I don't see how it can indicate those RPM without having the power that should be associated with it. And oil and intercooler open are per the real manual. Though I see now DCS's manual recommends the neutral position. I'll try that. Also, the only time I tried taking off without waiting for oil pressure to normalize, I had weird surging of the turbo. (Not sure why those two systems would be related. The engine and turbo have different oil systems, I believe.) Can anyone else reproduce this on the Caucasus: Cold Start mission? -
Had this happen a few times seemingly randomly when flying online, but it seems it can be reproduced reliably by flying the P-47: Instant Action: Caucasus: Cold Start mission. After starting and waiting for oil pressure to normalize, full throttle and boost are applied for takeoff roll. It barely gets airborne before the end of the runway, then won't gain airspeed or climb despite flaps and gear both being up and all power and RPM indications showing max power. Oddly, when I get dirty to try to land again, that's when it seems to pick up some energy, causing me to overshoot the first landing attempt. But as soon as I raise gear and flaps it's back to barely having enough power to stay in the air. This doesn't happen all the time, only sometimes. But so far that particular mission seems to cause it every time. Track file attached. P-47_Weak_CaucasusColdStart_01.trk

All that should need to be done is locking the waste gates open and removing their actuators. A P-47 normally bypasses exhaust from the turbo when the Boost lever is not engaged. This is why we shouldn't be hearing backfires coming from the rear during startup.

I'm okay with the rate the Mustang's trim wheels move and accelerate at. But I see no reason not to provide a FINE control for those who want it. You're absolutely right about standardization. There's tons of issues like that. (Like, which direction a toggle switch goes when you click left vs. right mouse buttons. It's kind of consistent, except when it isn't.)
-
That's not exactly like the Mustang. On the Mustang you hold the brakes (like they would already be if you're trying not to roll) then pull out the parking brake handle, and while holding it, release the toe brakes which will remain stuck on. Then, when you press the toe brakes again, the parking brake handle pops out on its own and the toe brakes then spring back to disengaged when you ease off them. I did manage to get it to work but it's really weird, particularly when you're used to the Mustang and similar systems. And it also seems wrong that the P-47's parking brake handle doesn't pop back out on its own. Does that mean next time you press the brakes they'll stick? Because the handle is still out!
-
I literally just solved the problem. I'll type it in for them if they want to send me the source code (as if). It's you fanboys who are the toxic ones around here.
-
Yep. Provide 6 new button mappings for FINE TRIM that move the wheels much slower than the existing trim mappings do. Easy. (Or at least would be in a well managed software development environment.)
-
Oh, good news! You found a P-47 with a functioning turbocharger to record then? Which one? And that turbocharger is fully engaged at startup with the waste gates closed. Who knew? So educational, this product!
-
Apparently his had no turbo. So much for experience! I wonder what household appliance they sampled for the turbo sound.
-
Can't get them to set here either. Don't think it's hydraulic pressure as they don't work post-flight either.
-
It's not dependent on hot starts. I get it and I haven't done a hot start yet.
