I meant dropping them after the fuel tanks were depleted, silly!
-
By the way, what are the effective ranges of the Equivalent missiles of the AIM-9 from the other module? Anyone have any experience with using them? Basically, the R-60 is just the Ruskie Version of the AIM-9, isn't it?

Keep in mind that in order to maintain a landing speed of around 300-350km/h, you will be burning a lot of fuel to stay aloft while maintaining that angle of attack. As Auditor said, just do a couple of comfortable go-arounds so you can land safely, as well as dump your fuel tanks if you have anything left in those.
-
Thank you for the info! You go through so much fuel, dropping those fellas seems like a good idea.

I know that the wing tank drop switches are easy to access, but I have yet to find a switch that can drop the 800L Fuel Tank on the aircraft's belly. I had seen in a word search that a switch to drop the tank exists, but I haven't found it yet. I'd rather drop the tank the moment it's empty to save some drag and hopefully boost my maneuverability and fuel efficiency. If anyone can snag a picture of where that switch is, that would be great. Or, if it's not tactically accurate to drop them at all?

Mid-air engine shunt/shutdown? What happened?
KilledAlive replied to KilledAlive's topic in MiG-21Bis
Yeah, I guess in the same way that the engine hates pulling negative g's, it also hates zero g maneuvers as well. -
I was performing a high speed dive going around Mach 1.2, leveled out, and I followed it up with a long, swooping, climbing left turn to gain some altitude and maintain my speed. Suddenly, towards the top of the curve where I was planning on descending or leveling out, a loud "THUNK" was heard, a puff of exhaust emerged from my tail, and I completely lost engine power. This is the first time this had happened to me without pulling some serious negative G's or doing something else wacky to the air frame. This is also the first time for me that my engine produced that exhaust puff as well. Sorry, I don't have a Tacview of it, but I was just wondering what other conditions an engine shunt and loss of power can occur. I was able to re-light, so it wasn't complete engine failure.

The moment you see a drop in engine RPM, begin the relight procedure. I would recommend having a real quick Keybind to flip the switch.

Give the DCS website a shot. Remember, these skins need to be installed on every client in order to be seen, so if you find something you like, be sure to send it to your friends!

Does anyone know where I could get some Ace Combat related skins for the MiG-21 or other DCS Modules? There's probably some of them lying around somewhere. Even just a couple of skins with emblems from the series would be pretty darn cool.

Huzzah! I have finally reached Mach 2.0, using clean pylons and a full fuel tank. i had started at around 10km, trying to keep the aircraft as level as possible. As soon as I hit around Mach 1.3 or so, i let go of the stick and allowed it to climb naturally. Keeping level at higher altitudes was tricky but i had managed to keep going faster. The moment I hit around Mach 2.2ish, my engine stalled, as shown in other people's experience, and the aircraft decelerated rapidly following that. Thankfully, I was able to re-start it before leveling out. Soon afterwards, I was blasted into oblivion by an AIM-120. So much for a happy landing, but it was well worth going that ludicrously fast.

Sounds Good! time to go FAST

I have been messing around with the 21 for a while now, and I always hear about how this little aircraft can hit Mach 2, But I had never managed to hit that speed. I know that as the air gets thinner, there's less drag on the aircraft, and a higher possible speed is attainable. I have tried hitting the performance ceiling and afterburning, but it was called a performance ceiling for a reason, and I couldn't get past 700km/h at about 12,000 meters. What's the optimal altitude and strategies to hit that need for speed?

For me, it works just once, and cancelling it causes something strange to occur that makes doing it again unreliable, otherwise, I Don't use it all that often, just for long range movement where there's no one else around to bother me, and I want to save fuel.

I believe Leatherneck had an announcement earlier that they were working on a Pilot model for the MiG-21.

I had to make a difficult choice of what module to get with my budget, and I really chose correctly with the MiG 21! It's the kind of aircraft that can punch pretty well above its weight class, so long as you aircraft duel honorably and not just get wiped from existence by an AIM-120. The variety of load-outs allow for you to be a truly multirole little rocketship. From UPK gunpods that just copy your own internal cannon can give you double the ammunition onboard, to unguided rockets and bombs. obviously you sacrifice a lot of manuverability and speed for everything strapped to your pylons, but it's great doing both. Don't get me wrong, it's a tricky aircraft to use, despite how simple the aircraft's systems are to begin with. You will die a LOT while trying to land, and the Direction Finding radio compass will be quite a pain in the butt. Not to mention, get ready for accidental flameouts, wing stalls, and other shennanigans. I'd say, go for it! Be the supersonic pile of rivets you always wanted to be!

I would recommend simply reducing the joystick's sensitivity for the stabilators. It's better to gently nudge the aircraft up and down for the first chunk of joystick travel, but leave enough room in the curve to pull up quickly. Just keep in mind that excessive wobbling will really bleed off speed over time.

I had noticed the "Fixed PRMG slide bar animations" showed up in the change-log. If that means that the PRMG sliders are now usable once more for Instrument Navigation, that would be great!

While it's a blast trying my best to take on aircraft with airframes and avionics far more advanced than I, it would be pretty amazing to try out the aircraft with fancy modern instruments and radar! Maybe, we could even get a gun sight that doesn't lie to you half the time in a dogfight!

I have applied some of your guy's tactics in my latest bout with a friend. The Emergency Afterburner proved very useful in combat, and as long as I had some labels on to improve my visibility (which I call "Vodka Vision" ) I was fairly able to interecept and severely damage and destroy my buddy in an F-18, so long as we started about 20km away and I could dive below a valley fast enough to evade detection. I used 4 IR missiles in my load out, which really helped in those high-g twists and turns. Still, once he had turned on Labels, it was the end of me. Either way, the Emergency afterburner wiped out my fuel even faster than I had imagined. Not sure if it's just me , but I often have trouble accelerating from around 450-500kph to a much more effective 1000kph after, say, losing momentum in a turn, or just getting off the ground. Is Afterburning still the best option for accelerating without directly losing altitude?

That guy's so freaking cool! I have never really reached Mach 2 in the Bis, but this guy really makes me want to.

So, I should Also make sure I have an AWACS plane scooting around as well to help me out? Or, will a ground based radar do the trick?
-
My friend and I usually bout in a custom multiplayer mission online, how do I get AWACS to communicate with me about my enemy's location using the Mission Editor?

I have been having a blast feebly attempting to dogfight with aircraft that are far above the poor 21's paygrade. I have been trying to dogfight aircraft like the F15 and F18 Hornet, against my friend who has the module, at about my skill level at dogfighting. The two of us, to even the odds, since the F18 just can blast the supersonic acoustic instrument from well beyond my own missile range, we go for guns only. I can't really get the F-4 Phantom in the quick dogfight mission, but I can sure attempt to evade the Phantom to prevent a gun-range demise as long as possible. What I can do fairly efficiently is approach him without being detected, which usually involves a low altitude stalking, and upon discovery, to immediately afterburn (or reheat if you are feeling fancy) and climb rapidly to his altitude. In most cases, I can avoid his radar detection until i'm about 5 or 6km away. One thing that I had noticed in my interception strategies, that I usually get up close, but then rapidly overfly the target, which leaves me dead to rights. Not to mention, in most occasions, the F18, with far more wing area than me, can manage some exhilarating low altitude evasion with ease. Usually, that forces me either into the ground, to overfly and lose him, or to pull back and try again. Sometimes, it leads to a more head to head situation, but i unfortunately overtake him. From my friend's perspective of the battles, he commends the remarkable ability for the 21 to hide at low altitudes, as well as its advantageous small size. Either way, once successfully spotted and locked on, an AIM 120 makes for a swift death sentence for anything in medium-long range. Sure, the 21's the cream of the crop of our favorite supersonic pile of rivets, but are there any ways to turn the tide of battle against a superior foe that you know of? Also, how do I get that sweet looking replay visualizer thing for DCS that would help me figure out what went wrong in my battles?

I would say in this situation to use the Fixed Net to determine where the aircraft sniffs for heat signatures. Then, use the growl combined with the launch light to determine when it is ready to fire.
