The pimax is set for 72hz and drops to 36, its not ideal but it does ok is. My problems with that is their implementation of motion smoothing, isn't really that smooth nowhere near as "almost there" as ASW 1.0 is in comparison.
-
They have already tried those brainwave controller things. Have they gotten the sensors more receptable yet or do people still need to shave their heads ?
-
Yeah my bad, I was referring to the ghosting, it's like an old frame is being injected in with the motion smoothing or hyperpredicting a frame or some such. And I'm rather particular with the levels of artefacting I am willing to tolerate. The 11ms mark is for running at 90fps, the reason to drop down in hertz is to give yourself a slightly larger window, so when running at 72hz the optimal becomes a 13.88ms. That would be ideal. And as with all things DCS, its not so much the GPU that is the problem. It's completely CPU bound still, because it is running only two threads, and the second only does audio.. Hence why one would se a substantial benefit from overclocking CPU frequency. Unrelated: People seem to thing the Index is going to run smoothly in games at 140hz, that's a frame time of 7.1ms, at a higher resolution, and with canted displays as well so a lot of games need adjusting for I'm sure, like the Pimax's. Yeah, I'm getting my popcorn ready for that one.

It's taken by a guy trying to hold the hmd in one hand, while trying to grab a photo with his cell phone with the other. Through the lens shots are meaningless. Utter meaningless. I might as well try to show the differences between a 720p screen and a UHD HDR tv. But it's presented on your cellphone in a 720p video.. In short complete waste of time. And it's not about resolution, it's a matter of medium.

Far less than you think. The 3.2ghz is the low ball, and it boost clocks to 4.6 out of the box, but only on one or two cores at once. I'm seeing peopme getting 5-5.2ghz on stock coolers or regular water loops with some luck and delidding. I'm too lazy to do that and I can't tell the difference between 4.7 and 5ghz. And I'm still under <75c at load. For gaming to simming I would barely hit 50c which allows for a much quieter rig. I do want that wide FOV, it's why I backed it. But seeing double every time I do any manouver, it just ruins it for me. Maybe someday they'll get a software version that handles it I'm, right now it's only close to ok.

I have already oc'd my CPU from 3.2ghz stock to run at 4.7ghz fixed on all cores. That's a very moderate oc for my i7 8700k but I couldn't really tell much difference between that and 4.9ghz. And for a daily, gaming desktop I rather stay <75c for ease of mind. To go higher I most likely would have to relief, get some of that liquid stuff in there. And then it's also a huge IF wether or not my mother board could supply reliable voltages as needed. So I'm just sticking with 4.7ghz. I suppose the performance in the 5k is on. But there is that issue with the double vision on roll, it's beyond jarring, to the point where I just use my rift for simming and the 5k for room scale stuff.

I don't think there would be enough dramamine on the planet.

You tend to ignore mura when things are happening. Personally I'm one of those who constantly find myself reminded of it when things slow down again with my rift. And this is a panel flaw, you cannot calibrate this away in software.
-
You need to render higher than the actual resolution so you don't loose too much from the distortion profile to correct for the lense distortion.

Virpil Throttle V3 - analog mini stick
Bob_Bushman replied to HC_Official's topic in VIRPIL Controls
I think I'm actually ok with what I got. But if they could consider selling these grips as upgrades to the old, then maybe. I can see how the detents are a big loss, but I honestly prefer to run smooth myself. -
25% here. And often shipping for something like this is €40-€50.. And they consider that as part of the price. So it's 25 % on item+shipping.. And then they charge €13 as a fee to charge me the tax .. Oculus charging €450 including taxes and shipping.. I got no real issue with that. Like getting stuff from virpil you either just accept it's going to be 30% more to pay or you don't buy. I did former, a lot recently..
-
US adds taxes after the fact, whereas here in Europe we are used to see that included. Oculus is one of the very few who has actually made it their policy to include shipping and taxes for your location in the store price. If I take acount for my taxes and shipping I usually get charged for later, the S is €299..
-
I suspect that NDA has been lifted already considering all the news. Heck some people have had shipping oopsies and even received a unit already. I suppose Wags is quiet on it caue it could be considered an endorsement or some other such thing.

Have never even used a motion rig. But I would sucpect all these inside out tracking HMD's will havd big problems They will need some sort of motion cancellation, similar to what I believe exist for lighthouse systems where you mount a controller up. Problem with that is the controller would always need to be in view.

Well, they did have a more "enterprise" level set of kit from what I remember that was on a different level, but that's not what I was used to dealing with, it was mostly the middle of the line or less, budget office laptops and "as cheap as we could get it" desktops. So yea, Epson and HP, a couple of brand logo's that often just gives me a pre-emptive psychosomatic migraine.. Once place was nice, they where on the premium service plan on Dell instead. Sure it was during that whole thing where the mobo capacitors would blow like the zits on a teenagers face, but all we did there was take the box in, hand them a new one. Then tell Dell how many units we had for pickup and needed replacement on a weekly basis... The "someone else's headache plan" I call it :)
-
Yeah I was running .91 stable since .121 simply was un-playable in DCS without it.
-
Well, I have never had something from HP that I didn't want to drop kick down a flight of stairs and set on fire with a molotov. I used to work in support, and boy did HP give me work... Of course this is unrelated for the HMD of course, but still, I have a rather low bar for HP.
-
Heck could even be possible to reach 80 native after the terrain optimisation. One can hope.

For ease of use, I would say two sticks of ram. It's of course entirely dependent on silicon lottery of mobo, CPU, and the ram sticks . But I need to ease up the OC on my RAM to 2900 from rated 3200mhz or start running into occasional Bsods or POST problems. Think that's the same PSU I have been runnign for a while now, no complaints. Plenty of cables and pretty much left on idle for my rig.
-
I was only reffering to the physical space between my face and the lenses.. In this regards the 5k has less room than any other, but is wider and higher than any other so this fooled me into thinking I could use my new glasses with. But just a three minute, very lazy beatsaber test I had scratched both pimax and my new $700 specs.
-
I find there are more vertical physical space in the 5k than the rift. But less depth than any other. After just one session I managed to scratch both my glasses and the lens, luckily well outside middle of vision and not to big. But I have had to switch back to my older specs that are much smaller frames. Honestly unless the promised eyetrackers are less 2mm thick they aren't going to fit inside without either occluding lenses or decreasing comfort even more.
-
Those who are worried about black levels vs the old rift. Well I obviously don't have an S. But if it is comparable with the screens in the pimax. This should likely not be an issue. Black levels are fine, even when watching a movie in bigscreen void. Only game I sort of notice it is in elite dangerous but it's more like that game has issues with gamma and not so much panels. Granted I haven't tested a night mission yet, I should do that tomorrow. Also the rift oled panels do not go black either unless you disable the pre driving and anti smear with the spudtool registry hack. If you haven't modified the registry yourself with this there is hardly any difference black levels whatsoever. Also got an s pre order in for may 22.

@TripRodriguez Same here actually. Diagnosed about a decade ago now. Apparently it was the fastest approved diagnosis they had ever done hehe. Money doesn't fall off trees here either but I do ok. And VR and simming is the only thing I don't skimp on and for some things, middle of the line is twice as expensive since it leaves me usually wanting more. Been dreaming about VR since summer 91 where I tested it at a fair. Then saw lawnmower man a few years later, terrible movie I know. And yes someone did ask me if I was going to get locked in if someone turned the hmd off. :eyeroll: I did skip the early Oculus prototypes but pre-ordered both vive and rift. And backed the Kickstarter for the Pimax as a "why not" so that's only cost me $100 recently and I backed for about $600 18 months ago. Using the 5k reminds me a bit about how it was switching from windows to debian on a laptop in 02-03 and trying to get working wifi, takes some effort but it is possible. But even though successful I'm only getting 36 fps, with brainwarp running that is just barely ok. I haven't bought a 2080ti since I consider the benefits not enough for too much, I would rather try and wait for the next series and get a proper upgrade then. Try being the operative term, I am tempted to say "sod it" and just get one. As for VR the fov in the 5k is nice, but not quite as absolute as I believed. I may be odd but to me, frame rate is king, or, at least the illusion of frame rate. I honestly right now think the unit fit for most people is the rift S and will be the most likely one to simply "work". From what I hear it's got good lenses and should present comparable resolution to the 5k. So I have pre-ordered one of those too. They won't let me get an index yet so we will see, if it's between the 5k and index I would give the index the nod. I find myself missing the dash desktop interface even more than I first thought. And that motion rig looks awesome. That's one thing the S might not be so great at, since it has internal tracking it would need cancelling out as well. Then again I don't have motion.
-
So far I own. CV1, Original Vive, and now gotten a Pimax 5k+ that I backed on kickstarter. But also pre-ordered an S. I possibly would have gone for the Index too, but they won't let me. So far the 5k+ can get the better experience, granted it's the only higher res unit I got, and the fov is nice, but honestly not a deal breaker to loose it. But the media will obviously focus on the others pushing higher numbers, regardless of the fact that no-one with anything less than a 2080, or better 2080ti will get to use either the Index or Reverb in a proper manner, inow, turning their game into running like a visual potato. I am just barely getting the 5k+ to run in DCS setting it to 72 hz and rely on smoothing at 36fps, reaching 45fps in it has been impossible. And the entire 5k experience is about as fiddly as switching from windows to debian in 2003. Remember the state of linux and wifi drivers back then ? Yeah that's the level of troubleshooting we are dealing with here, and firing it up means crossing your fingers and hoping it works. Steamvr in general is also quite a bit more convoluted than the Oculus, and boy am I missing the dash desktop interface. If you want a polished VR system that is most likely to just work. Everyone is still leagues behind Oculus.

Makes a bit of sense really. The vr press is currently flooding over with Index and Rift S news. It would either be pointless or very expensive to compete on the same news cycles as those two and waiting a week or two they can get it out in a less contested.
