When either ms or Oculus update to fix it.
-
I think others, and Oculus have warned against those power splitters and saying they won't help, and could fry your device, can't qoute a source on that though. I simply suspect it's wonky cables, and one of the first things that go to piss on a wonky cable is solid power delivery, and the Oculus S cable is just long enough to potentially see issues for that. I don't have any USB or tracking issues, but I have a fair few DP connection issues. But I'm also runing this off my external PCI-e inateck card, and I'm not using the onboard audio at all, that could possibly shave of a few amps. Oculus so far seem to be thinking this should all be able to be sorted in future firmware updates.

Yes you will need steamvr. Which will require steam. But as has been mentioned, you do not need the steam version of the game for use with either of the main VR headsets. Just starting DCS should launch the appropriate service be it steamvr or Oculus.

Haven't had any tracking issues, except for when my large frame include the controllers. But I am having a butt load of DP connections issues. Only way I have managed to get it to connect was by plugging in the do first, then USB. Then I would sometimes have black screen, this could be sorted by reseating the cable in the HMD side. This to me sounded like bad cable issues, and started a ticket. And in day three I got a lot of lasting rainbow noise over the entire panel. But after a lot of fuffing last week it just started to work again. Since then I haven't dared unplugging it. But Oculus now wants to test my cable, and it's going to be at least two weeks to get a cable in return. :(

This is the latency issue I'm referring too. Took me a while to put my finger it but this is what ruins the immersion in the 5k.
-
Better, at worst on par with some. But it's got none of the weird latency, and lens barrel distortion that is permeating the pimax sets. This is two things so annoying with the 5k I find it honestly disgusting. Even for basic games like beat saber I can't really stomach the pimax for more than a few minutes.

The thing where Oculus beats everybody , especially steamvr. Is the dash interface, don't take the HMD off to alt tab grab the right controller and open dash, and open your desktop view. With the s it's so much clearer I think I could use it for working. Also enable the Pass through cam in dash settings/experimental. If you switch to steamvr know they haven't solved the hotas controller bug yet that renders the entire steamvr UI completely unresponsive if you have a joystick device connected. I have tried all the workarounds but to no avail. If you ask valve about it their official stance to the issue "unplug your hotas"...

Had the same issue as Dburne. With the same fix, reseat the cable in hmd . Had the occasional white flash after, so it also look like a poor cable. From my experience that's what it looks like when a DP about to fail is all.

Now I've got an IPD of 64-65mm, so couldn't be better tuned for me. And the entire lens is practically in focus. The resolution and clarity is honestly twice as good as the pimax even. Only tested briefly in dcs but I could spot ground units from about 4-5 miles out with this the cv1 you could take a guess at around 2 miles. Audio well it's poor. But no need to rush and buy earplugs I can get my logitech cans over this no problem. In fact it fits a little better than the cv1. The halo strap sits above the cups on this, where the cv1 straps would pass through, and loosening my seal. Pass through is great, especially for finding your cans after donning the HMD. ;) So far Oculus here has a device that beats the pimax on everything apart from FOV.

Yeah It's not meant to be used to read a kneenboard sadly, but it could be useful to find that slice of pizza or a piddle pack if you need one.

From what I heard in a test, it was a double tap on the Dash feature button. I too would love to have the ability to use a button, or keycombo for these features, I could for example use Voice attack to toggle up a desktop\world view. There is a 3.5mm jack on the S itself, so if you got a 4" cable it would be perfect the audio solution is built into the headstrap, and there isn't much point in trying to remove it.

I don't know where you are, but outta coming forth here, with thunder..

The S has a pd of approximately 1.2x in comparisons with the cv1. I'm running my rift at 1.4 in dcs, cause frankly anything past 1 1.3 is rather masturbatory, the panels just can't display it. In short, Just this minor bump in res, will look better than an ss/ pd of 2x.

Think they charged a bunch of pre-orders yesterday, if you don't have a tracking number I don't think it's shipped yet. That's the boat I'm in currently.

What smell would we need for DCS? Check this out

Could arange that with a log on the fire and bottle of cheap vodka. -
I would have been fine with. Almost as good. Add on top pass through camera and the dash interface... I expected to miss it but not as much as I do.

Holding up rather surprisingly well.

Dcs is in fact the only place where I haven't needed this apart from zoom or the occasional fog effect looking funny. But in anything else, ranging from pcars, beat saber, H3VR etc to elite all needed parallel projection compatibility. Might be pimax need more of this than index, and the index takes less of a performance hit. Time will tell, as with always. I'll happily have egg on my face but I doubt anyone with anythijng less than 2080/1080ti would have issues getting decent performance out it.
-
Higher fov, canted displays. Steamvr will have to do something similar as parralell projection compatibility as the pimax has to. It's honestly going to take more horsepower than the 5k+, since it's even higher res than that. . Just to keep the 5k from looking horribly pixelated with that turned on, and so far DCS has been the only game I have played that doesn't need this 100% of the time, The rendered resolution is like twice that of the actual panels, and that's just to keep it from not looking worse than cv1.

I don't know why hard-core vr enthusiast thinks the move from gen 1 to 2 should be almost as massive as experiencing VR for the time again. Then again this the s isn't gen 2, it's trying to make a device easier to use with hardware far more people have. Hardly any has a less than two years old $3000 gaming rig. That's what the index will require to play something more complex than beat saber.
-
Pimax isn't even using the full panel, depends on how much the S does but it is possible that it could look even better than the pimax if it's got the lenses for it.
-
I have over 3000 hours in VR now. I got it dialed in and running dcs at 1.4ss. There is "getting a general sense of" what is displayed. But sit back and tell me you can see the exact transition on the f14 speed gauge from 260 to 240 knots? Without using zoom. It's not reading, it's educated guessing at most. These details can matter in some situations.
-
Probably not for DCS, maybe 60fps then up to 120, maybe. The pimax need to be set for 72, since without regardless since what I can get out my system even at potato settings the Pimax can't get more than 40. So I can set it for 90, fail to get 45, and thus no smoothing at all, or set for 72, and get 36 with some smoothing. And yes there is huge visual difference between Oculus ASW and pimax, or Steamvr's motion smoothing. They truly are a step ahead in this game. Trust me, you would not notice the difference between 90 and 80. The reason why 80 look so horrible in the current hmds is because they are tuned to run at 90, and when they don't run at that the hardware and software freak out.
-
Honestly, first thing I would try, might be to scale down your overclock primarily as a way to at least rule that out. I haven't had any freezes or major stuttering in the pimax or rift, running an i7 8700k @ 4.7ghz 32GB @ 2900, initially rated for 3200, but being to kits of 16 I don't get post at 3200, and the occasional bsod at 3100-3000. And a 1080ti that I so far has left on stock. I do have some rather annoying ghosting on aircraft roll in the pimax but that's about it really.

For just cockpit style games one sensor is enough. Sure two is better, it stabilizes and you won't loose tracking just because the cat sits in front of it. But unless this is an old kit. Like 2+ years old and used, it was switched for the newer touch included kit around that time. And hasn't been sold since. I would, recommend the S, even the small increase in resolution would be substantial. With the current rift the smaller steam gauges andeven mfd screen is nearly impossible to read easily without relying on zoom. And even a small increase will be substantial. And it should be designed for a comfier fit and simplified setup. As simmers just not needing two less usb ports is almost enough of a reason. Currently my setup takes. Extra keyboard, extra trackball. Pedals, throttle, two joysticks, and two cougar mfd button frames.
