PC performance gain - Hyperthreading
Bob_Bushman replied to Talisman_VR 's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I think it was never actually necessary to do so. And certainly not on the later cpus. just leave it any change in performance for single threaded tasks are in the margin of error and for multi threaded tasks it's a clear benefit. But as with all things software it doesn't cost anything to try. Give it shot and make your own decision but unless you are doing Blender renders on cpu or other such tasks I would guess youbwouldnt notice any difference either way. -
Multi GPU VR will happen, eventually. But not through current methods and quite some time ahead. The RTX implement is a big step towards this, and the Quadlink\SLI it uses will eventually take as many GPU's as you can stuff into a machine, pool all resources that can then be used by software is if it was a singel device. It's going to happen, it will take a while, but inside a decade I'm sure. Track ir is honestly in-comparable with VR, personally I could never get behind the idea of changing how my view is on a screen, buy moving my head away from it. Yeah curves and snap zones etc etc, but I just can't get on with the fact that I think it sounds ass backwards. VR is however 1:1, yeah, current versions look as if you grabbed someone elses glasses in terms of fidelity, and you are sort of wearing blinders on, but I'd rather fly a jet. After that flying on screen isn't flying, it's looking at a really boring screen and pushing buttons. Anyhoo, my 0.2c And this is just generation one, inside five years what we have now will seem utterly quaint. V2 of the rift for instance will most likely make the v1 look like a museum piece.

g29 clutch / brake / gas as rudder/brakes?
Bob_Bushman replied to fael097's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yeah each racing pedal is one axis each. But rudders are not. Both pedal share one axis since both pedals are linked as they are in planes. And the only thing the two has in common is they are operated with feet. One goes up, the other comes down. You will have to merge two pedals into single axis using joystick gremlins or something similar. And yes that works but it won't work very well compared to even the cheapest dedicated set of pedals. I would recommend using the gas pedal and clutch to combine for rudder, at least those are somewhat close in mechanical response. -

Its not really whether Gsync or Freesync work well with what. They both do. The real question is what GPU you want. If you buy an Nvidia GPU you will not be able to use freesync, period. If you go for an AMD gpu you will not be able to use Gsync, at all. At this point in time I would not really recommend AMD for gaming, their current GPU's are signifcantly behind the performance of Nvidia and requires significantly more power for the same performance. And either monitor will work just fine at a set refresh as well, using either syncing option is, optional. -
Recommended gear for DCS
Bob_Bushman replied to Aviator_George's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well I just started dcs this summer. And running with the virpil, warthog throttle and MFG crosswinds. And the virpil throttle should be in the mail but there is no action on the tracking number so far  I kind of also want the Gunfighter but my hotas is now almost as expensive as my pc and that wasn't exactly budget either... I'm absolutely loving the crosswinds and virpil stick. The warthog throttle kind of almost just manage to keep up in comparison. But since that isn't crazy enough. I have already started devising a plan to build a hall sensor based helicopter collective and button panels. Cause I obviously will need more than what the stick, and both throttle units can provide right ? And this project just took another crazy step since I just ordered a 3d printer.. -
Recommended gear for DCS
Bob_Bushman replied to Aviator_George's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I would say the one you can comfortable afford and use while giving you your needed inputs and personal preferences. For DCS my first recommendation would be something better than say the hotas X, it is rather dated and not as accurate, in comparrison with something like the t16000m which would be my first recommendation. Everything after that should honestly be various levels of luxury. That said the Thrustmaster is these rather over hyped. It was a top notch stick simply because nobody really made anything better. Now there are real options, and yes shipping and buying is a bit of a pain. And how TH insist of doing the stick backwards, in other words. Metal on the outside, cheap plastics on the insides. It's only redeeming factor is cost. -

Well the main problem with freesync is that it doesn't work at all using an Nvidia card even though that is the open standard. There are ways to hack it to work. But that means passing the image through a secondary AMD gpu. But I can't personally comment anymore on either since I have never used either of them. -
I meant is sounded similar to that, and was suggesting facetrack as a standalone non-trial option.

Should not, but could be if you where not using a peripheral for a while the power management feature for USB devices power it off, and then something weird happens when you actually want to use it again. It really shouldn't do this though even if it was on. Windows updates for instance is notorious for enabling this feature after you disable them. This can be set through the usual power management settings. on w10 just type "edit power" into the start menu search field and click "change advanced power settings" and it will be the option under USB settings. Also I recommend powered hubs for usb devices as much as possible.

Sounds a bit like facetrackNoIR I played with a while back, but I found it rather unreliable http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net/home/default.htm It's an open source project so have a go.

Then I didn't own a stick until Elite dangerous launched in 2015, and this summer I wanted an upgrade. And I started DCS primarily to get a better use option for buying expensive sticks and pedals I had bought. Namely the Virpil t50-mongoose and the MFG crosswind pedals. I then had to get a better throttle, so currently using a warthog, but I also have a virpil throttle unit coming, I hope. Took me some tweaks to get the gimbal to my liking, but my liking is an extremely light action. So I am using the extra Cosmo-sim cam's that don't increase needed force towards edges while mainting a centering. Coupled with the lightest springs and tuned to the point where the stick barely centers itself. Not that it doesn't, I can let go and it returns to dead center every time. This means while I'm flying my Huey I just barely hold the stick between my thumb and index and gently adjust. There are no bumps or detents just precise motion. And if you want you can swap out cam's and springs and have it behave like an arm wrestling simulator if you so wished for warbirds. I just prefer the softness for all my birds, then again I mostly just fly helicopters and arcady space ships. Anyhoo, I am very happy with the virpil and can recommend the hardware. And opposite of the warthog stick, the grip is plastic, but the internals are all metal. And for instance you could buy the warbrd gimbal and use the warthog grip on that. Would still run you perhaps £200 and I would recommend getting the optional cams as well, I'd rather have them and not need them you now. Yeah, FFB is special, I had a sidewinder in the 90's, must have tossed in a dump somewhere during a move or something. They are old now and any FFB support are at this point entirely legacy, so who knows how long they will be supported, I might see if I could get one just for fun though if I have some spare cash someday, and now I made myself laugh.

For tv's yes. And fhats why they stopped making them, but with the ultrawides the curve serve the purpose of aligning the outer edges of your panel with your eyes so it allows you to sit closer without having reduced image quality in the edges. The same reason why you would set the side screens of a trippel setup at inwards angle instead of flat with a wall. Of course the value in this varies with panel types and features. But there isn't any reason to avoid curved monitors. Unlike in tv's you will always be sitting in the center, and very close. Also the curve found on the curved monitors is much smaller and less pronounced than what Samsung pushed on their tv line up. As for 1070 vs 1070ti I found it a bit of an odd duck. It was somewhere between the performance of a 1070 and a 1080. When they first came they where almost as expensive as the 1080 so why anyone not just get that? Seems the 1070ti has fallen a bit in price since then and can be found for not much more than 1070 it is a slightly more capable card but not massively, but like 10-15% or so. So between the two I'd go with the 1070ti. -

Well, I am a bit of a VR evangelist myself, I own a rift and a Vive, and have a pledge in for the Pimax 8k, but when someone asks about a screen, I answer to that. Also with VR, I'm afraid he would need a significantly bigger upgrade to his computer, and as things are, still feel the need for a new screen for anything non VR related. VR is honestly the only reason why I have built the rig in my signature, without that I most like would still have been very happy with the i5 4690k and 980ti. For instance just the move from a 4th series CPU and ddr3 to a new DDR4 platform was huge when in regards to VR stability. And especially ASW artefacting improved significantly basically from unbearable to barely noticeable. And I moved from the i5 to an i7 4790k with the 1080ti, to the 8700k with the same and percieved upgrade was a monumental as swithing the 980ti with the 1080ti. -

Need help picking monitor and upgrades
Bob_Bushman replied to XAiracobraX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
As long as the speakers are aimed appropriately at your listening position it should be no problem. As for screens I'm in the school of "bigger is always better", so I suppose you could guess where I'm going ? Anyhoo, I have been living and enjoying a 34" ultrawide monitor for about three years now with the native resolution of 3440x1440. I bought this as a new main of my multi monitor setup, intending to keep two of my 24" 1080p panels that I was running in a trippel screen setup. It turned out to completely replace all three screens, a large ultra wide give me all the benefits of a multi monitor setup for working, but none of the problems associated with running surround or just having 3+ monitors connected to a pc. So definitely a big "two thumbs-up" upgrade decsision in my opinion. When I got this I was also running a stock i5-4690k, 16GB of 1600mhz RAM and a 2GB 960. The latter was just shy of being able to run high\maxed out setting at the new resolution. I was not playing DCS though at that point in time, mostly Elite dangerous and enjoying the new surfaces beta as I bought the screen. I switched that out for a 980ti and after that is was simply to "max all the things" and coast. A 1070 should easily manage the same, I'm honestly certain that with those two you could easily enjoy any of the new screens, short of a 4k at higher settings with higher frame rates. And there could be some issues with compatibility with some games and ultrawide resolutions, in the absolute worst case scenario, you run the game in 2560x1440 this gives me black bars on the side, but the screen itself still operate in a 1:1 pixel grid and no scaling artefacts. These titles are few and far between, DCS is not one of them for certain. The worst I have encountered so far in my usual roster of games is that Skyrim needs a quick text file edit to run in a wide resolution, after that it works just fine. And if you do, watching a 21:9 movie on such a screen is positively a treat when compared to regular screens, apart from two thin black bars on the side the image fills the entire screen. -
I placed my order on the third of August after quickly querying about a delivery date and they replied 'next month'. After they moved the internationl store my login of course does not work and there was no to way login and check the order so I shot them an email on Monday. They replied 'Order is set for delivery this week' and yesterday evening I got the delivery email with tracking number. If anyone has been waiting awhile, no harm in sending them a polite email. So I hope it's on its way now, it is a bit annoying. Ideally it would have arrived while I still had the option to return the brand spanking new warthog throttle I got after the noisy pot on my CH throttle killed me in the p51 ;) Which lapsed a little over a week ago (60 day store return policy) Ok that wasn't all the fault of my throttle. Anyhoo that leaves me with both. I'm thinking a posh dedicated handbrake and landing gear lever? And if DCS wants to release a quad engine big bird I'd be ready. Oh woe be my tragic circumstances.[/sarcasm] I was thinking using the 1-5 selector as a form of Hold-modifier in DCS so I could quickly select what radios the dials and encoders would control in for example the Huey or other functions. But if I set this in DCS, the unit, or it's software report separate inputs for each selection, it should, I think work out to the same. As for a ministick, well the warthog throttle nipple is the definition of useless, a binary on-off hat is better. But I also have a constellation delta stick on the way which does have a thumb stick for slew or whatnot. I still might prefer my mongoose grip though.

When I responded that I read his reply to mean more like "no zoom in VR", which is true if you use default zoom.

master arm toggle switch ?
Bob_Bushman replied to FZG_Immel's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
I am getting _backup.000 , _backup.001 folders in my DCS main folder. Each seem to contain backups of the binding files I have customised and the updater seem to make a new one for each update. check in the file structure there and I think it should be there. -
The medevac tasks are missing their embarkation actions. By default there is no way to actually retrieve them. Simply added in the appropriate action for each unit and it's working on my end.

Sounds like fun. I'l bring my KA-50. :joystick:

There is a dedicated VR zoom function. In controls under "UI layer" named "Toggle VR zoom". I highly recommend binding it to your HOTAS, but unlike the regular zoom it is a fixed in out though.

Use TM Warthog throttle 3-way autopilot switch for the Huey's AP?
Bob_Bushman replied to HoneyBadger's topic in DCS: UH-1H
The warthog throttle doesn't use the "default.lua" but the "Throttle - HOTAS Warthog.lua". Same folder: For me that would be D:\DCS World\Mods\Aircraft\Uh-1h\Joystick\ The switch in question only registers as two separate buttons. Button 28 and 27, not really important. I have just tested this in the warthog throttle file by adding these inside the keycommands: {down = 3029, cockpit_device_id = 9, value_down = 1, up = 3028, value_up= 1, name = _("level flight - do not set this"), category = _("Toggle_cheat"), }, {down = 3028, cockpit_device_id = 9, value_down = 1, up = 3029, value_up= 1, name = _("AutoPilot ATTITUDE HOLD press"), category = _("Toggle_cheat"), }, {down = 3030, cockpit_device_id = 9, value_down = 1, up = 3029, value_up= 1, name = _("AutoPilot ORBIT press"), category = _("Toggle_cheat"), }, The way I consider this to work is the two commands for AP orbit or Attitude hold trigger on button down. But each command on button up engages the level flight setting. You can fairly easily modify this as you feel the need to, basically just set it up so each of the bound commands trigger the function desired to be on the middle as the button "up" function. And also, these add extra commands under a new category that you can find in the control drop down list. I have just tested quickly in game, and these seem to work at least. Personally I don't use the AP in the Huey much since it has a tendency to kill me.
