Is DCS worth it with just a normal hotas?
CBStu replied to conura's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a VKBSim stick that has twist for the rudder. It works just fine for FA-18, and P51. Sometimes in an approach where there is an obvious cross wind I wonder if it might be easier to manage w/ pedals. But I don't wonder enough to be bothered w/ the expense to buy pedals. -
I have started looking at PCs. I have had great experience w/ Dell so looking there. One thing I notice is that the 9th gen core i9 is really expensive. My 7 yr old Dell XPS has an i7 which was pretty much top end at the time so I keep thinking I should go to the top again. But each time I do their 'modify and buy' I am quickly over $2000 w/o a monitor. Sticking w/ an i7 saves $350 which could be used for more memory, next step up GPU or just not spent. So how important is the CPU and will there be a noticeable difference between an i7 and an i9?

I had the same problem. I stopped using the training for that reason and the fact that you can't back up to the previous screen. I run the sim in a window so that the bar across the bottom of the screen is visible. That way I can access Chucks guide that I have saved and can go to you tube for tutorials there. I pause the sim, do my research on either of the above, then un-pause.

Rob 10, thanks for to further options. I will try both tomorrow. BTW I bailed out on that upgrade. By the fact that the price is listed in pounds I assume they are in Britain. But even if they are not, I am not thrilled w/ giving them my card info so it hangs around there for 3 months before I get my parts. So I will keep checking and may buy when they have stock or maybe I won't need it by then.

I got the button properly assigned now. I can see slew move while in the controls screen w/ just a light slide of my finger over the button. And I can see the push function too. But to slew the MavF, Chuck says you need to push and hold the button while you are slewing. This doesn't work at all. Oh well. I am on the list for the mod, and started looking at PCs yesterday too.

Tried an experiment using the num keys 8,4,6,2 to slew and got it to work kind of. Not a long term fix but an experiment. Unfortunately I found the limits of my 6 yr old PC. Having the seeker picture on the left DDI causes the whole screen to do fine but constant stutters. As soon as I go back to the stores page on the DDI, all is well. I know I need a new one anyway but this really brings a PC up the list of things I want to buy. Thanks for your help guys.

I first bought the A-10 but was so overwhelmed by all the electronics that I got the P51. Other than being a tail dragger which is really difficult to take off and land it has been fun. But I wanted to do carrier work so bought the FA-18. This thing is an absolute blast to fly. It does carrier, air to air, and air to ground. What I enjoy is you can learn at your own pace. It's easy to use the gun and the rockets and there are several instant action and standard missions limited to just those weapons. Last sale I bought the Persian Gulf map and it more than doubles the missions available for the FA-18. I am slowly learning more weapons and sometimes it can get frustrating. At that point I stop my learning, and fire up a mission I am more capable of and fly for fun. One warning, you need a really good throttle to do carrier traps. The throttle is your descent rate control. Although it is not the main factor, if you occasionally note the speed readout as you are on approach, the difference between being a tad low and a tad high is about 2 mph. My largest single item $ expenditure is the $250 for a TM Warthog throttle. But it turns out to be worth it for sure. One other thought from my reading on this forum (because I don't have it), is do a LOT of research on VR. One poster here recently made the comment that there may be some technical breakthroughs coming not to far in the future so his thought was don't rush and buy VR now.

Yesterday I spent some more time trying to get it to work. I can assign the push function but can't find a reaction anywhere for the left/right and up/down movement. How have you programmed yours?

I will get on the mod list. Thanks.

I was thinking the same. This is the first 'slew' I have tried but I read that there are definitely more applications for that technique. Shame that mod won't be available until next year. I wonder if it would be possible to buy an extra of the button on the right side of the throttle and install it here? Somewhere a month ago i read about a place that sells stuff like this. I sure wish I had saved the info.

The switch labeled '1' and 'Mouse axis' what do you guys use this for? That little nub in the center I can get to work as momentary switch but it is so tiny I can't make it do any left, right or up,down at all? If I turn the throttle around to look at it carefully I can use my fingernail to move it, but no way will it work in normal orientation. I am looking for a switch to slew the Maverick F aiming reticle and have run out of them. Maybe I could buy the proper style switch and replace this one?

I have mine on the top grey switch on the right side of the throttle. Rear position must be held or it flops back to the center so I use that for deploying the brake. Forward position the switch will stay there w/o holding it so that is retract speed brake.

I tried it w/o success. It did give me the thought that I need to have increased view movement per head movement so I have made changes to my profile. But the underlying issue remains. The targeting que in the hud is somewhere in the vertical middle of the head. If you turn your head just enough that the JHMCS que pops up, it is much lower in your view than the hud que. Getting tired of tilting my head way back and looking down along my nose to get the JHMCS que usable.

I am currently learning Sidewinders w/ JHMCS. I use a mission in the Persian Gulf map for AIM-9X for this. One thing I have noticed is when I read through Chucks guide there may be 10-12 steps. But when I do the mission it only takes 3-4 to get going. I don't know if the plane in the missions is somewhat preset or what but it's a welcome surprise. One problem w/ this mission is it is me against 4 Migs and they are not far away, so I have to do the setup really quickly or I end up w/ a couple behind me. I bet over the weekend I flew that mission 50-60 times. I hit left shift-R to restart and just keep trying. I also hit pause pretty often to go back to Chucks guide or Youtube check some detail.

Get the Hornet. We all have different personal finances but what I will say is this, if you have to take 3 months to pay it off on your credit card, just buy it. You will be so happy with it that first payment will be no problem. BUT, one thing you need is a really good throttle. To me that is the most important thing in carrier traps. I had gotten a VKB Gladiator stick previously and can recommend it wholeheartedly. It has twist for the rudder so no pedals needed. Buying that stick for $99 will help make the TM throttle more palatable. But the throttle on the VKB is fine for everything but carrier traps. I finally made the $250 commitment for a Warthog throttle and it makes all the difference.

If you buy the Persian Gulf map, it has many missions for the FA18. The standard Caucuses and FA18 come w/ quite a few missions and the PG map more than doubles the count. It will be a long, long time before I can do all of them.

I will look into this speed setting tomorrow. I have tweaked the heck out of the angle response curves but never touched speed. Learning all the time. But still, why is the HUD aiming circle where it is and the JHMCS a lot lower? Makes no sense to me. If I were going to make them different, I would make the JHMCS higher since we are almost always looking up when in a dog fight. What is it I don't understand.

I just spent a couple of hours trying to get this better. I started out w/ the JHMCS cue being much lower than the velocity vector. I tried looking down various amounts and then hitting F12 to center the Track IR. That didn't work too well because one's standard line of sight is then above the VV and you have to look way down to see the DDIs. So I went into the TIR settings. And thought I'd try the default TIR setting which I have never used since it made it all way too fast and jumpy. It did make the JHMCS possible to use but not ideal. So I thought I would mod my curves to help. I left my null zones the same. I have them at about 7-8 deg of head movement before the TIR view moves. In pitch, I unchecked the symetrical? box and gave significantly more angle to the UP curve and left the DOWN curve alone. In yaw, I left it symetrical, but cranked up more response to head movement. This has helped a lot. It is still not perfect. If I move my head just enough to the side to get the JHMCS cue to show, it is still way lower than the VV. But adjusting my TIR response curve means I can over come that drop much more easily. This is the route of the problem and I don't understand why it is that way. There are quite a few threads on this so it is not a one person problem. ED, are you listening? But now, w/ my modified TIR curves, it is usable at least. Still too dang jumpy but I think that will get better as this is only my 3rd day using JHMCS.

I just started trying the jhmcs 2 days ago and have the same problem as the OP. It is so low it's almost unusable. I will try Harker's idea but not sure it will work. I know that one thing I do every time I fire up TIR is I have to check the position of my headphone since the TIR is attached to it. I play around w/ it until I get equal movement up and down. Typically that is about 100 degrees as seen on the setting screen in TIR. So, once I have that set I am not sure I want to mess w/ it to get JHMCS working. Also I notice that the JHMCS doesn't move as far left and right as my view does. IE; if I turn my head till I am looking at 90 degrees the JHMCS is only moved maybe 75 degrees.

When I started DCS I had my heart set on flying the A-10. So many wonderful videos of them saving our ground troops in the sand countries. So I flew the free P51 some, flew the free Russion jet some (so little I forget what it is) and bought the A-10. It is super easy to fly. But then I went to one of the tutorials to learn how to fire that cool gun. I think I did figure that out but then all the other stuff, nav, bombs, rockets etc I had to look up so many terms I decided it was over my head. I will go back someday, but then I bought the FA-18. Yep it's still kind of difficult to get all the different bombs and rockets figured out but it is also so easy to fly. And it's made to land on a carrier so it will survive dang near any crappy landing no matter how hard you hit. And it lands on a carrier. And it lands on a carrier. Which I think is the coolest flying procedure in the world. After many hundreds of traps, I am still learning, but I am enjoying every second of flying the FA-18.

Flying the mission Red Rover in a P51D. I take out the first AN26 and head back north again and see an AN30 (I think) and line up on it. The briefing says they will launch a new plane every time I down one so I am think this may be some great practice but...BAM I get taken out. I had seen something coming (using labels) but didn't think to try to read the label. After I die, I look at the F10 map and there is a SAM site up there at the same field the ANs have been coming from. SAMs in WWII?

Ignoring warnings about pitot heat / engine anti ice etc
CBStu replied to b0bl00i's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I have also been ignoring the inlet icing. Funny thing is I never had that in the Caucuses but get it quite often after I bought the Persian Gulf map in the recent sale. -
Trying to understand this since in next 3-4 months I will get a new screen and PC. It looks per above conversation that 4k stuff isn't really all that great for DCS. That could be a good thing as it will certainly reduce costs. I have a 24 screen now and think a 27 would be kind of a waste as it is not enough difference so have been looking at 30-32. Do I not want a 4k screen? Looking at this another way, would a 32 inch HD (not 4k or even 2k) screen run at the same 1920x1080 I run now help w/ spotting planes? Would things start looking pixelated w/ that setup.

There have been several times when my controls go FUBAR. I look through bindings and find duplicates, get rid of them and all is well. What happened I have no idea cause it all worked fine 2 days ago. But then I also have duplicates that don't cause any problems at all. IE my flaps can be controlled either by a pair of buttons on the joy stick or by a 3 position switch(?) on my Warthog throttle. Been that way since I got the throttle months ago. I thought I would be more realistic using the throttle switch til I found out that it is actually patterned after the A10 throttle. Some times this stuff is frustrating but then I think I wouldn't want to try to put out a product that works w/ as many different people, PCs, controllers, etc like ED does. I just can't imagine how many possible permutations there must be so I am glad it all works as well as it does.
