small things that make a BIG DIFFERENCE (List Yours!)
flameoutme replied to flameoutme's topic in DCS 2.9
I will go ahead and list one. In another post somewhere on the board someone talked about playing music when flying. I've been wanting to do that, but in such a way that it isn't a lot of work to do. Turns out VoiceAttack has the ability to play not only an mp3, but a whole directory of mp3's. And you can tell it to play the files randomly. There's also a way in VoiceAttack to have the song end quickly if you choose another. So I have a voice command that says "Play Random Song" and it does. You could have as many commands of song directories as you want, e.g, Play 80's retro songs Play love songs etc. It's TRIVIALLY easy to set up. Choose: Add the command, choose OTHER > Sound > Play Random Sound > Play random sound from a directory, and I like checking the "This completes all currently playing sounds" option. Enjoy this little thing that is easy to set up and fun to bring into the mix when you want. -
Sometimes it's the small discoveries that can make a big difference. In this thread, I'd like to invite flyers to list anything that you discovered or read about/ saw that really help make DCS even more enjoyable. Doesn't matter if you thought of it or you saw it in another post. Acknowledge that and explain why you like it. Try to give enough detail on what it is so the rest of us might try it.

I own the 18, 14, now 16, F-5E and the M2000. Of them all I like the M2000 best. Complex enough to be a challenge, simple enough to have fun. One thing that stands out I've noticed is the visual damage and crash modeling. Ranges from spectacular to frightening. Noticed the hand up when the pilot is dead in the cockpit? Scary. I am just into the 2nd mission of the campaign. I thought it clever how they worked in training into scenario. I was flying with the English cockpit but switched to French for the realism. Well done!

Thank you so much for posting this. I have a Rift S which I always knew would be a 1st baby step for me but I want something more. I am wondering if the lower FPS is just due to having to push more pixels due to the higher resolution and not a software issue. When you say other games purr in comparison, are you talking about with VR or on the monitor? Can you clarify - you say the cockpits look great - but also say other objects look clunky. Thanks! The Cosmos is calling to me from my Amazon account, would love to hear your additional comments!

Newbee M2000 Pilot Needs Help Selecting Magic Missiles
flameoutme replied to flameoutme's topic in M-2000
Well, I'll be darned Just after my previous post, I happen to look at the change log as listed here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=245165 And wouldn't you know it says: "8. CAN and MAGIC can only be selected via HOTAS." I have to say, trying to figure out why it wasn't working had me spinning my head around. Perhaps my fault for not reading about it first, but I have to say its about as counter intuitive as one can get. I wonder how many other heads out there are close to exploding. I can select it fine now via hotus. !!!!@@@##^!%!!! -
I know I must be doing something wrong. I've watched the tutorials on how to select the magic II missles, but when I click on its button there is no change to the hud, no "p" showing up on the selector button below MAG. I tried in VR, outside of VR, in several different missions. I tried with clicking and with Lctrl-1. I can select and shoot the 530 no problem, and guns as well. Any suggestions?

Is there a way to arrange the order of the various airplane and add-on buttons at the bottom of the dcs home screen? I want to put my owned planes together and make my life a bit more joyful when I load DCS up. Right now, its just a mess and sends bad vibes every time I load it up. I know its a small thing, and I can live with it, but if there was a way to manage that I'd be delighted.

I have the rift S, and I was actually admiring how easy it was to read the gauges today, before I saw this thread... go figure.... I am running pixel density around 2.

Playing the Campaign with some Ace Combat Musics
flameoutme replied to cm2's topic in F-15C The Georgian War
cm this gave me the idea to use voiceattack to play a song. easy to use, set up phrases like... song goodbye yellow brick road and it starts playing my mp3 of it. you have to experiment what volume to set, this is done in voice atttack i normally set it at 25%... but salt to taste. -
I find VR along with strategic use of voice attack highly immersive. Flying the F-14, which relegates much of the button flipping to Jester and leaves the pilot to concentrate on flying, is super immersive. That being said I can see why some would prefer a physical cockpit for the tactile feel of button switch, but that's not for me. However, if I did get into civilian simms like flying a 747, that is about buttons and switches. I have a Rift S, and that is viewed as a bridge to whatever next generation VR sets arrive next year or two. Then I will switch up. I'd rather put the money in that than a physical cockpit. Again, each salt to taste.

Of course, salt to taste. To me, F/A-18 is easier and quite fun... but the F-14 is immensely satisfying to learn and fly. The more you learn about the F-14 the more exciting it is and the satisfying it is just to learn something new about it each day. Heatblur, in my opinion, not only hit it out of the ball park. They hit it so hard and fast that it shot out of the ball park and over two adjacent parks 10 miles away! Easy, no. Satisfying and enjoyable, absolutely.

I have been enjoying the F-15, F-14 and F-18. Of these, F-15 is the most relaxing to fly - far less to know to get it off the ground. Visually its on par with the 14 and 18. Especially in VR which I fly exclusively. Since I fly VR, F-15 became a lot more fun and immersive after offloading a number of commands to VoiceAttack. If you are unfamiliar Voiceattack is an easy to use and program program for converting words you speak yp actions. For example, "lower flaps". You need something like this if in VR to use F-15 because as mentioned, the cockpit is not clickable. But I also use voice attack in F-14 (Jester, Loud and Clear..) and F/A-18. But getting back to which plane - F-15 to me is casual and fun, and F-14/18 is when I want to learn systems in great detail. I like them all.

Dear Heatblur, holy cow, what an amazing job!
flameoutme replied to TheHighwayman's topic in Heatblur Simulations
I just want to echo how FANTASTIC the F-14 is. It was a little daunting at first, and I still have miles and miles to go to mastering it, but I'm having a ball in the '14. BTW I'm in VR which makes it doubly so. I've never felt so "into" a flight sim - it's a GREAT and BTW mentally active way to spend time. Now back to the sim. If you are new and haven't pressed forward in the 14', keep at it it will pay off like no other. Wow. -
Hey Rudel_chw & Breaklight: So helpful! Thank you!!!

I wanted to set up a mission to bomb a nuke plan. I am in Caracas. When I clicked on "Add Static Object", and selected Structures, I did not see any Nuke plants. I may not be doing something right, not sure. Any advice? All appreciated.

I love the inserts I have, which were purchased for the Oculus Go for about $80 but work perfectly for the S (I own both). Frames direct. I'm sure VR-lens.com will also be good. So much nicer without wearing glasses.
-
Just a question to any who might know - is there a way to shut off the narrow bottom of screen status bar one gets after hitting f2? I want to do screen shots without it.
-
I am very happy with the Rift S, it's not a perfect VR experience, but it's a heck of a lot of fun. Also... it makes DCS VR no longer a novelty. You will want to use it for flying. Wearing headphones unfortunately is needed to get both full immersion and to hear everything well. But that's ok.

Upgraded to i9 9900K from i7 8700K and can see no difference in VR
flameoutme replied to imacken's topic in Virtual Reality
I can't remember the exact numbers, but I have run fpsVR on my new I-9900 which has a lower end 1080 card, and am surprised at hour leisurely the CPU chugs along. On my system, its the 1080 card (8 Gig card, non-ti) that is the bottleneck in VR. -
Just wanted to mention, related but unrelated, that if you by chance have prescription lenses for the oculus Go, they snap in and work perfectly with the rift S. I can confirm.

I built my PC from this newegg kit: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.3893618&Description=i7%209700k%20combo Just over $1000 for a 9700K processor. I had a graphics card already (1080), and an extra SSD. I bought this only for gaming. Very happy with it. My graphics card was a zotak 1080 mini, which when I bought it was something like $600 off amazon. But as I said I alreday had it. Took 5 hours to build it and to my surprise fired up first time. Also purchased a new copy of Windows 10, USB version. The darn thing installed in under 15 minutes, I think it was closer to 10. I have never seen that....

>>> I have to tell ya Emmy - but a distance of 1-2 feet away is all that is needed, not 'across the room'. And for those with lessor eyes they may not see it at all. I'm retired Navy ('tho not a pilot) and have seen some excellent camera work over the years - and I am flat out amazed at how close this comes. The key I think is the 2560 x 1440 res - sure I'd love it even sharper but it really does look spectacular in 36" x 24" poster size plus a little overall adjustment to light levels in photoshop (darks a bit darker and lights a bit lighter - I used "levels" plus a small amount of increased saturation). I never expected it to look this great. Really - it's kick butt. It does *not* look like a game screen shot grab at all. Don't forget to turn on all the bells and whistles in settings to get the most textures etc. BTW, I added an additional "tip" to my first post. Do your screenshots by "watching the track". Do that, and you can exactly control the camera, zoom etc. And it adds to the fun.

Don't mean to state the obvious, but a call to your eye doctor might yield the IPD on file. They also might simply invite you in for a quick (free) measurement once you explain what you need. Miracles happen!
