PointCTRL - Finger Mounted VR Controller
j9murphy replied to MilesD's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Are you using this on a crystal? I was worried since the top edge is angled in different directions that wouldn't work... Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk- 3421 replies

I don't have connection issues either. I plug my USB directly into the back of my computer and hold down the power button on the hmd until I see the power light come on, works every time. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk

I typed the wrong thing above, I'm using Pimax Play, not PiTools. I hope I find a good path to smoothness as well!

My Pimax Crystal Review This will be brief, to the point, and opinionated of course:) This is the 4th headset i have used now - Odyssey+, Quest 2, Reverb G2, now Pimax Crystal Alternatives I considered before buying the Crystal: Quest Pro, Aero, waiting till next year. What I use it for: DCS, FS2020, XPlane (not yet tested) My system: 13900K, 32GB Ram, 4090 Comfort/Weight: worst by far of all the headsets I have experience with, the Apache strap does help quite a bit, cant imagine a long session without that. With the thick foam pad (additional purchase) you can wear glasses, but the headset then puts pressure on the nose. I will be ordering lenses from Hons VR, I think that will address that issue. The cable pulls down on the headset to a degree that I never noticed with G2. Still considering ways to address that. I don't expect this headset ever to be as comfortable as the G2, but with those mods, it should be "tolerable". Screens: the best part of the crystal, huge upgrade from the G2. It is NOT crystal clear all the way to the edges, but it is clear enough most of the way out not to affect game play. You only notice if you look for it. There is also some coma at the edges. I do have the glass lenses for anyone wondering. Honestly, this is the only thing that makes you keep the crystal and put up with the other deficiencies. It's a FANTASTIC view. FOV: vertical is really nice, I can see the edges if I really look but that it's a really nice VFOV. horizontal is really not much better (if any) to the G2, if it is better it does not improve game play, speed perception, or anything else in the game. Setup: Went pretty easy for me, but that was ONLY because of tremendous amount of doc/video from the web. What you get from Pimax is not much help at all, although they link to a video on their website (that they didn't produce) that get's you started. 72hz: not GA yet, didn't test Motion Smoothing: doesn't work in the current version, fix promised in the next release Performance: I get more stutters with the pimax than i did with the G2, that may be due to not being able to use motion smoothing yet, but I'm sure it's also due to the sheer number of pixels being pushed. I can use the headset at full res, but I get better performance with PiTools at .75 and XRToolkit at about 3600. Still a work in progress here, but DLSS, 72hz, motion smoothing will affect what is ultimately achievable. Even with out those I'm mostly happy, but I miss butter smooth that I had with my G2 at the moment while I continue to tune. Quadviews, PimaxXR, Dynamic FOV are all must haves, without those, the headset would not perform adequately and would be going back. Am I keeping it? Yes

Reverb G2 refresh rate and refresh rate questions in general
j9murphy replied to Richard amo's topic in Virtual Reality
As long as there as a difference between HMD refresh rate and fps (eg 60hz HMD / 45fps DCS) you only have two alternatives... - keep the same frame in the HMD until a new one arrives (which causes stutter) - motion reprojection to fill in the gaps (which adds GPU load, and a little blurring - and still stutters sometimes unless you keep some overhead in your system to keep the fps from dropping too low or varying a lot) AFAIK, them are the only choices. My choice is smoothness (motion repro) over clarity, although I'll tolerate occasional judder when looking at the 3/9). As said above, capping your fps (nvidia/riva/openxtk) can help prevent stutter/judder. I've had mixed results although riva seems to work the best, and does work quite well with msfs. -

now is that stutter or judder??? (for those of you not laughing, don't answer that.. it was said in jest only and not intended to start a terminology war) -
For reference can you let us know what cpu/gpu combination you are using?

Well my DMAS headphones came, but no headset... They don't put tracking numbers on the website, all it says is order shipped, unfortunately it looks like that didnt include the headset:( I got a shipping notice in email, but only tracking number. I guess that hasnt shipped yet, no idea when that might happen.

My crystal sim arrives on Thursday, I should be able to put it through its paces this weekend and report back my experience (coming from G2). I was really on the fence with this purchase, will see if I keep it or not... Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk

PIMAX Crystal SIM Edition 72Hz, no controllers €1369
j9murphy replied to winghunter's topic in Virtual Reality
True, higher end mother boards have specific ports for device charging (my asus rog has a couple). Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk -
Your control profiles for each aircraft are stored in C:\Users\[Your user name]\Saved Games\DCS (or DCS.OpenBeta)\Config\Input Your most recent file will be the new device id, the one before it will be the one with all your settings in it. You can look at it to verify. You just need to rename the old file to the new device id or copy the contents of the old one into the new one(replacing what's there) Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk

PIMAX Crystal SIM Edition 72Hz, no controllers €1369
j9murphy replied to winghunter's topic in Virtual Reality
Is the supplied hub a powered hub? I wouldn't plug anything but a USB stick or dongle into a reliable unpowered hub. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk I'm interested in trying the 72hz mode as well. If it doesn't blur from motion and doesn't seem hard on the eyes then you should be able to crank up the render resolution quite a bit in that mode. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk -
Just copy the settings from your old profile that worked into the new one that was created... or rename the old file to the same name as the new file that was created. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk

I also ordered a sim edition crystal although it hasn't shipped yet. Looking forward to giving it a go coming from a G2. I hope it's a keeper. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk -
G2 to Quest Pro (when is better actually better?)
j9murphy replied to j9murphy's topic in Virtual Reality
agreed, but the "next level" of immersion for me is not more clarity - it's a wider field of view. Not that that the G2 is great, its just good enough. A wider field of view would improve immersion by creating a greater perception of speed and being able to more of the battlefield at once. -

What's the difference between the PD version and the QC version? figured it out:) https://www.baseus.com/blogs/content/pd-vs-qc-the-differences-between-fast-charging-technologies -
G2 to Quest Pro (when is better actually better?)
j9murphy replied to j9murphy's topic in Virtual Reality
I have a 4090/13900K/32GB I was hoping the drop from 90hz to 72 wouldn't be that noticeable...sounds like the effect varies by person (like 60 hz does) These are somewhat disappointing, and may be the reason I choose not to upgrade yet. If the FOV doesnt solve the speed perception problem, and night flying is no better, then I'm getting a little clarity in the trade and maybe some more headroom for smoothness and eye candy (both nice)... but it's not really solving the current fundamental immersion barriers for me (everyone has their own subjective list lol). Like was pointed out, I can always evaluate and return I guess... the quest (no pun intended!) for the perfect vr headset continues:) -
I would love to replace my G2, but only under the following circumstances... - I want a larger FOV, the narrow field of view in the G2 impacts speed perception and means you have to move your head rather than your eyes more. I think the QPro has a larger FOV, but is it large enough to actually solve the problem I describe? - I also want a better experience flying at night. The G2 is bright at night, the blacks aren't, and the instruments glow around the edges. it's fatiguing to the eyes and hard to look at - I avoid flying nighttime missions with it. - anything that help fps is good, motion reprojection is nice and i tolerate it for smoothness, but running without it is sharper for sure. Would upgrading to a Quest Pro (or something else) substantially improve the items above, or would it be a minor incremental improvement that doesnt completely solve the problems above. - I'm actually ok if my clarity or resolution is not any better. I don't want it to be worse!, but better clarity or resolution is not a primary motivator for me at this time, the above 3 factors are more important to me while maintaining smoothness. One more thing, was dropping from 90hz to 72hz on the pro noticeable in any way visually to any one? I've tried 60hz on the G2 and that is a no go for me, like looking at a an old CRT.

Is there a way to recover WMR when the headset goes black
j9murphy replied to Sandman1330's topic in Virtual Reality
When the headset goes to sleep, the display turns off. In the WMR window it will say that the headset is sleeping and give you a button to "wake it up". This does wake up the headset, but now the headset is no longer in the game, it is in the cliff house (usually). In MFS you can turn off VR and turn it back on without restarting MSFS and that (usually) brings back the VR display. As bignewy said above, you cant do that in DCS so the only option is to prevent sleep in the first place (which others posted how to do above) -
Where can I find documentation around which accelerations (surge, heave, sway) go into the table values that LoGetAccelerationUnits returns when placed in the Export.lua file?
