  1. I found the experience to be so much improved with VR that I can't imagine going back. The resolution is not as high, and there are some nuances that need to be adjusted to (things like the color MFD's require adjusting each flight to make the moving map readable) but on the balance it's amazing. I struggled mightily with carrier landings until I switched to VR and now I can plop it on the deck without much fuss.
  2. I had the same issue, also specific to the harrier but not other modules, but after putting in a small dead zone on my axis tune it appears to be resolved. I don't know whether you have a dead zone set, or not, but you might try that if you don't.
  3. I really don't know what a "real" response is. What I do know is that my stick must have a little twitch in it so with no dead zone Alt Hold would veer off after a little while and I would start circling. I also find the curve allows me (and at 60 I need all the help I can get) a bit more precision in handling.
  4. Chock this one up to user error (aka stupidity.) It's been quite a while since I tried out a new plane and completely neglected to set up my stick axis. So basically I was using a straight linear response with no dead zone at all. After setting it up to my "standard" deadzone-3, Curve-15, everything is great. :) It's still takes more attention than a FBW plane, as you have all pointed out, but at least it feels controllable and Alt Hold works perfectly.
  5. I've recently started learning the AV8. My experience to date has been with FBW planes, i.e. F-18, F-16 and M-2000C and I'm struggling with AV8 handling. Here's some examples of my issues. 1) I can setup a clean plane, fly at roughly 350 knots and set AFC and Alt Hold. The plane will fly along for a few minutes and then begin banking and stay in a 20-30 degree turn. I can steer out of the turn and reset the AFC/Alt hold and it will fly along again for a few minutes until it happens again. 2) I really struggle with trimming the plane. I (sort of) understand that as a non-FBW it is sensitive to both altitude and velocity but dang it's hard getting it to even remotely level flight without Alt hold, which then has the issues mentioned in item 1. Anyway, any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm flying in VR with a T16000 thrustmaster. I'm pretty competent with other planes but this one just feels like if I'm not constantly watching what it's doing it is going to spin off into some uncontrolled regime. Thanks for any advice!
  6. Thanks! I did cut a corner in the area that you mention.
  7. Question on 1st mission (spoilers) The first time I tried this a couple of SU-25's spawned after 2-3 minutes circling north of the air show. The 2nd time I circled around for over 10 minutes, never exceeding 3 miles from WP6 and never going south of the waypoint and nothing ever spawned. I exited as I guessed a trigger failed someplace but now I'm wondering if the spawning is random and maybe no attack will happen?
  8. I just copied all the files to my new SSD and then modified the shortcut to point to the new installation. Seems to work fine.
  9. I really like: Operation Cage the Bear The Serpents Head campaign M2K converted campaign. I’m recommending these because I’ve played them. There are several others queued up that I’ll be doing soon.
  10. a) do you need to TDC select once the TPOD is pointed at the target prior to launch and b) Undesignate won't boresight the TPOD but cage/uncage will I believe.
  11. Success. Please ignore my problem as turning off AV allowed the install to complete.
  12. So after reading threads regarding other install problems I turned off AV. It seems to be doing "something" now. Hopefully it will complete an install and all will be well. :)
  13. I've had stable installed for a long time but decided to install the open beta also so that I can try some of the new F-16 training missions. Everything seems to go okay until it reaches the stage of "copying files from D:\Program Files". At this point it just hangs up and will not progress. If I cancel the installation and try to run the Open Beta installation it will end up at the same place, hung up again. Any thoughts?
  14. So after deleting the standalone PG directory, unlinking steam DCS from standalone, uninstalling steam DCS, reinstalling steam DCS, relinking to standalone and running repair to reinstall the PG files everything works. Changing the virtual memory did not help so my best guess is a corrupted file that was not detectable by the repair function. Thanks to all for suggestions and ideas that helped get this resolved!
  15. Okay it's something in the Persian Gulf map. I realized that most of my user provided or self written missions use the PG map while all the ED missions/campaigns I've been running use either the Causasus or NTTR. I tried a ED training mission in the PG and it crashed and then I tried a user mission in the Causasus map and it ran fine. Hopefully I can delete and reinstall the PG map without losing anything
  16. Hi BIGNEWY, Thanks for the quick response. I did a repair, checked that I was running the latest version, renamed my DCS save folder and relaunched the game. I did not copy over or change any setup info but tried to launch a mission using whatever default conditions were there. I also updated the driver on my Oculus (this was prompted by the headset itself letting me know an update was available), I should have mentioned I play in VR using a Rift S. I still experienced the same crash symptoms. I then unplugged the VR headset and tried again but also experienced the same crash. Note I did not reboot after unplugging the VR headset but I'll try that after I send this off and see if that changes anything. Attached are the crash files. I could not upload the mission I was trying on the most recent crashes as the size is too large. It can be found at https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3307246/ Because I could not upload the mission I also retried a mission of my own that is much smaller. It also crashed during load so I'm attached that mission file. As I stated earlier I've flown both missions 4 or 5 times previously without issue. Thank you again for any help. I will try rebooting the system and trying again (so VR drivers don't load) and I'll also try various other missions/campaigns to see if I can find any common factor with my files. dcs.log-20200211-175549.zip TOM PG3 Strike with SEAD.miz
  17. I've recently developed a strange problem. The game will crash whenever I try to load a user generated mission or campaign. It doesn't matter if I've made the mission or I've downloaded it from the user file section. These are all missions I've successfully run in the past without any issues. If I select instant action, or a campaign from ED (like the F-18 campaign that comes with the plane) things run fine. I've tried both standalone and steam versions of DCS and F-18 and F-16 modules all with identical results. I've deleted all mods (I only had the flight deck crew mod anyway) and most user generated missions. I've also run a repair on the standalone version. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions would be appreciated! One of the (many) crash logs should be attached. dcs.log-20200211-155421.zip
  18. @LeCuvier oh I could have looked it up but to state it more directly, I don't want to do an auto-start. I kind of like going through the motions of starting up and for the F-18 it's pretty quick and easy especially compared to the M-2000C! :)
  19. Like some previous posters I am solo only, and have much to learn, so I stay with stable.
  20. I used to really struggle with the F-18, to the point of giving up on it, until I switched to VR. Now although carrier landings are not trivial, they are relatively straightforward and more often than not result in a trap on the first try.
  21. I am a big fan of the F/A-18, even with features not fully implemented yet. Of course the only other plane I've flown a significant amount is the M-2000 and I'm guessing any plane would seem in good shape compared to that! I am happy that, in general, ED does not create more problems than they solve with each patch...like with the aforementioned M-2000.
  22. @LeCuviet I essentially always do a cold start manually. I honestly don't even know how to do an auto-start :) Very rarely I'll start hot on the runway or already in the air.
  23. Thanks USMC_Trev! I am forgetting to turn on the alert altitude!
  24. What's the trick to getting radar altimeter data? I change the switch below the UFC from barometric to radar but, regardless of altitude or even if I'm sitting on the ground, it will always flash "B" to the right of my displayed altitude when I'm in radar mode. I'm sure I'm doing something stupid but I can't figure out what!
  25. Thank you very much! So if I understand, the Calibrated Air Speed is not the actual velocity of the plane through the sky but it does give a good indication of the energy state of the aircraft, i.e. the ability to maneuver without stalling or becoming easy meat for an adversary. The speed on the HSI is the actual velocity which is used for navigation. Do I have that right?
