  1. As I understand it the diamond is meant to be a laser designated target detected via Pavepenny. So the diamond should be implemented, but not like it was in FC. This time it should be implemented as it works in the real thing. FAC will call laser on and it will pop up on the HUD.
  2. I havent heard of one that is. Normally survival radios transmit on 121.5, 243 and 406 freqs simulateneously. These can be DFed easily. Some modern systems transmit an encrypted position via satellite also/instead of. So yep- DF is still used for search and rescue but not so much for locating aircraft in a tactical environment, particularly when you have datalink (from my experience, which is not A-10).
  3. This ^^ The core market of simmers probably know about a games release 6 months before it actually comes out. ED dont need a system such as steam to advertise and provide the game to people who are going to buy it anyway, because then they have to give a share to Steam. If ED released A-10C on Steam, then I would buy it on Steam and steam would take a cut. If they don't release it on Steam then I will buy it anyway and ED will get all of my money. Once the core market has bought their copy from ED, ED can use steam to reach out to the greater market that would perhaps not have bought it. I would love to have A-10C on Steam, but I totally understand why its not. Being in disbelief that it wont be released this way and then expecting an explanation from game developers is pretty arrogant IMO.
  4. Yep- this is called DF "Direction Finding", normally used for combat search and resuce (CSAR).
  5. Unsure, most aircraft that perform CSAR have a DF capability though so I would say the A-10C does. I wouldnt imagine DFing off keyed radios is common practise in an A-10 these days though. For 1 its bad radio practise (you are tieing up the net), 2 its bad EMCON, 3 most tactical scenarios will use a frequency hopping radio such as HAVEQUICK which you cannot DF and 4- you have all your buddies on data link so who needs DF :)
  6. I think what you mean is air to air TACAN. It will give you only a distance from other cooperating aircraft with TACAN but it will give you radial/distance to a tanker.
  7. True, but Link 16 its not really used by the A-10, its SADL. As mentioned earlier, SADL is designed for CAS and is used by the A-10 primarily to maintain SA on ground forces. The a-10 cannot display targets on a link 16 network unless their is a unit with a SADL/TADIL J gateway on the net. The attachments in Einsteins post suggest these gateways are fitted to F-16s and EC-130s, but I would guess they would also be on other C2 aircraft that contain Link 11 and other TADIL gateways. In the context of this sim I guess this doesn't really matter anyway, its all datalink, except unless there is a gateway simulated, you wont have TADIL J targets from F-15s or other non SADL users.
  8. Sounds like this book is pretty detailed, might have to get a copy!
  9. Good eye for detail. Nice spot that man!
  10. I was thinking about this question to and from work today, so thankyou for entertaining my brain for 80 mins! Your radalt theory seemed to be sound, except most radalts only go to 2500', which wouldn't be high enough. Anyway I gave up and found this article: http://web.archive.org/web/20030415000511/http://members.aol.com/Stravonski/private/gun.html So it turns out it uses nothing (well up until the lightening pod I guess). Its a fricken laser.
  11. Wow, already! Fantastic, thanks Wags.
  12. Wow, awesome, thanks Jim
  13. I think the most effective advertising is GAs (and others) vids on youtube. Guarantee to sell copies with those masterpeices. Every time I watch one of those vids there is always comments saying "what is the name of this game?".
  14. I would say the FD would only be used as an enroute tool when the pilot wishes to hand fly but wants added SA for inclement weather/night ops. It would be great for VNAV with a low cloud base. I would doubt that it is ever used to teach pilots how to hand fly, as pilots are taught based on outside cues, particularly the horizon. Teaching someone to fly off the FD is instilling bad technique for VFR flight.
  15. The cross is for orientation when looking at the lightening display. That vid changes between HUD and lightening view. You can see it on the right MFD of the DCS screens we have seen so far- so yep it is implemented. This pic also shows that the HSI has letters on each of the cardinal points which should help you with your bearings. Edit: Looking at the HSI, it looks like the lightening pod will be in true. Edit again: The cross on the lightening display should only be used to gain situational awareness on the MFD picture rather than your aircraft heading, as the compass is relative to the picture only. The camera twists on gimbals as its gyrostablised on the target. This means when the target is behind you the lightening cross compass will be 180 deg out to your HSI and when the target is at you 3/9 it will be 90 deg out.
  16. LOL I'm pretty sure West is always the same direction from anyones perspective.
  17. Apparently the load in FC2 is all AP rounds. I would assume we will be able to choose our round type and maybe even mix in DCS, so as long is there is HE, I would hope there would be some kind of effect when it hits the ground.
  18. You cant base its value on the cost of the parts to make it though. I mean A-10C would only be worth the 20c DVD its printed on then. The money pays for the software, the integration and the countless hours of tuning.
  19. Kaiza

    IVC?

Easy way to remember it is UHF guard is a harmonic of VHF = 243.0 (121.5 x 2)
  20. Kaiza

    IVC?

Yep, IVC would be great- and much better than TS IMO. That is because, as kingneptune says, you would have to change freqs/select a stud in game, rather than using keybinds. Also, line of sight etc could be implemented.
  21. I am a firm believer in trackir. Yep it does seem overpriced, but in my opinion it is worth it. Unfortunately the over priced attachment is worth the extra too. The standard reflectors get seduced by lights in your room and sometimes causes the trackir to go a little haywire. The attachment makes it very accurate end totally trouble free.
  22. Have you tried clearing all keybinds in the game and then using just your SST programming software exclusively?
  23. Concur. I see FC and DCS as quite different games, compatibility is a nice to have, but at the end of the day the games have quite different styles. I would prefer playable JTAC before FC compatibility.
