  2. YEP- with a Corian counter surface. **update** scrapped the 2 separate plywood pieces and instead cut out flooring underlayment. I needed the shelf space between the controllers for mouse and writing surface and/or desk space. Placed a thin, but ridgid sliding patio door stop underneath- centered on my pedals to reduce a little sagging and to increase overall rigidity. The angled shims bring the controllers to a better ergonomic angle. I used small 1.5" C clamps with cut up paint sticks to avoid drilling holes in the Corian. I thought about just going to get some stiffer plywood- but this was right here in the house. Besides-I hope to be in my own place within 2-3 months tops, so just need it to work.. I still feel like this belongs on www.thereifixedit.com :joystick::smartass:
  3. yeah I have to respectfully disagree. A HOTAS is a crucial piece of equipment- as is the track ir. These items should not be looked at as "enthusiast" They are a nugget's best friends. In order to facilitate effective learning- you need to set up a HOTAS as true to life as possible. Now don't take me too literally here. I DON'T mean setting up some insanely awesome cockpit complete with consoles and laser cut panels. I'm talking about your controllers. The training and the basic language is comprised of terminology like: "CHINA HAT FWD LONG" "TMS UP SHORT" "DMS LEFT LONG" There is a good reason for this- the same throw of the switch serves different functions depending on what the SOI is. Your brain will learn to associate and memorize these terms WAY faster and easier than trying to put together a dizzying array of key commands- most of them using up to 6 modifiers in the sim. . (L+R ctrl, alt, shift, and sometimes windows keys) This is what we did in LOMAC and FC. No problem. You assigned your key commands- done deal. I tried this same approach with DCS. The results are in: You will need to arrange -in a logical manner- the basic HOTAS functions. (TMS, DMS, TRIM, BOAT/CHINA, COOLIE. CMS too if at all possible. If you do not have these functions assigned in a way that works well for you- you will struggle mightily. You can still combine commands on the same HAT- but do it logically. Don't just throw a bunch of random crap at the same HAT. (ex. TMS/ DMS on the same hat- one of them as a "shifted" or alternate set. ) In short a HOTAS is critical. A HOTAS with enough HATS. Non-owners will scoff at this, but neither is a track ir an exclusive, elitist tool for flight sim whackjobs. I can't think of a more valuable tool for a new guy than this. How in the HELL can you learn anything if you are constantly having to adjust your virtual melon in every direction at all times? If you have to pick one item pick this. Even over a HOTAS. (but don't delay the HOTAS a minute longer than is absolutely necessary) Having to manually adjust your view is a colossal task. And- a waste of programming space on your stick. These items are a critical investment for this hobby. No one wants anyone to go into the poorhouse- but do obtain them as soon as possible.
  4. Yep. I was going to attempt to center-mount the stick to a chair, but aside from the potential carpal-tunnel issues- Peter P made a very good point about being able to reach the pedals comfortably. The base of the stick forces your legs apart. Makes reaching and using the pedals very awkward..
  5. Some tin canister.. It apparently had flavored popcorn in it...
  6. DRUM ROLL PLZ.... one nice item- an angled platform for the pedals.. a little fabrication... should look something like this.... need to get a few small clamps. I was considering a package of wood shims to gain a small downward angle..
  7. testing 123... testing.. from my exceptionally man-ly sewing table cockpit at my temp. living arrangements... :D ....alright. Everything seems to have survived the move..
  8. Saiteks combat pedals certainly look the best.. Best quality is CH for now- but I reckon that if the combat pedals hold up they would likely earn more sales.. I was hoping a drastic price cut on provantage.com signaled new CH pedals were forthcoming- but alas.. Evidently not the case...
  9. When she first said who it was- I was probably... About 13-15 .. I must have been sporting one of my patented "yeahright" expressions..She says It is! He owned a bar in Quincy (I believe) in the 18xx's. I said "Nana- EVERYONE in Boston owned a bar back then" Seems that way today too.. Next day she had 2 pictures laying out- and all I could say was- "wow"
  10. I'd buy it as a gift- but all my friends think I'm a little caddy-whompous, so I doubt they would be asking.. :D
  11. I think Chizh put out a hotfix for that.... looking... edit-- nevermind. The hotfix seems to address a crash- from what I see posted here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=67747
  12. The keys to using mav's directly is to try to approach him nose-on if possible. Coming from an angle means you are "chasing" him across the screen thus depriving the seeker the time it needs to lock. It gets easier as you close in- but you are more vulnerable to whatever it has to shoot back with... TGP is far better- as has been said.. I only use the MAV directly when I'm trying to rapid- fire 2-4 shots..
  13. Today- when I looked at dunadan's avatar. That's the last face you see on the musical intro of an older comedy show called "Cheers" That is my great-great grandfather. (according to my deceased grandmother- She's shown us other pictures of him years ago -- we couldn't come up with anything to dispute her..) No shit.
  14. Noted. Thanks.
  15. I think our guys are not eligible for the $25m bounty... too bad.. They deserve it.
  16. Absolutely Outstanding.
  17. Definitely like the obutto. In fact- that is a likely purchase for me once I finish re-assembling my divorce/sold home/new job becomes full time life. ;) That other link looks great. I was hoping I could find something cheap I could adapt to a cheap chair when I move to my temp. digs in the next couple of days. No room for my nice big desk. I have to make a small sewing table work as a pit for a while.. Kind of cool in one way- it has a nice angled platform for my CH pedals... Nice link.. thanks...
  18. Question- is there a type of common hardware that could be used to solidly mount a stick and throttle to a chair (stick in center/ throttle to side) Preferably with some kind of articulating arm that could be adjusted to the right position- then secured.. I realize I would have to fabricate the actual mounting platform, but if the "mounting arm" is out there- that would be great. I have snooped around a little in plumbing sections etc but have not seen much that could be adapted for this purpose yet..
  19. My experience with Saitek was the same- always install the drivers first. Personally I would use the SST, but that statement is based on SST from a couple years ago. Had 3 x45's.
  20. Had that too.. "gold"
  21. http://chproducts.com/retail/world.html There's a list of CH retailers- just in case one of them can do business with you minus the $$ robbery. Or at least - minimize it.
  22. He is in Egypt. I guess Saitek is not available, Noc? Not given any better options- I'd rather see you with Saitek than the logitech... But if you gotta- it's better than no hotas at all..
  23. Don't buy that thing bro. That kind of coin gets you a Warthog. Compare the two? um... OK.... CH should also be on your list. Top quality. Top software. Top support. Warthog is most ideal for DCS A10- CH is one of the best options for all flight sims.. Under $300 for all 3 pieces.
  24. yup. very cool if it could be implemented w/o killing performance.
  25. It tries- but it is definitely not a true IR representation. Not so much the vehicles, but the surroundings. That's what we got, for now..
