Ok I've decided not to wait for pascal
j0nx replied to Jateu's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I see no difference at all with DCS performance in Nvidia surround on my 2600K rig with GTX970 compared to my 6700K rig with 980ti. 3D surround performance is much greater with a 980ti over the 970 though but most of you here don't run that nor ever will. A rift will be somewhere in the requirements of Nvidia surround but much less taxing than 3D surround I assure you. My bet is that a 970 will run DCS on par with a 980ti from my experience with using them both. -
Should I buy a gtx980ti for upgrade and Rift CV1
j0nx replied to Jateu's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a 970 and a 980ti. Used to have 970SLI before upgrading to a 980ti. The performance in DCS with a single monitor or in surround with either card is the same. 3D surround on the other hand is muchhhh faster with the 980ti than the 970 because it has to render each screen twice. VR will be pretty power hungry as well rendering 3 separate screens so I'm a firm believer that a 980ti for VR will give you the same increases in performance that it gave me for 3d surround. SLI for DCS is a broken mess right now and only more so if you throw in VR into the equation with those driver issues that remain unsolved so I highly recommend against SLI for VR for now. A 980ti is the way to go for at least the next year imo because pascal isn't even slated to come out before EOY anyway from what I have read. In fact nvidia was MIA with an actual prototype at CES and there's a lot of speculation out there that they didn't even have a working prototype to show so EOY may even be ambitious for them. What they showed at CES as a pascal was speculated to be in fact a 980. The last time they pulled this stunt the new cards were delayed. -
You should try DCS with just a single 980ti enabled. Something with DCS is broken big time with SLI and causes a lot of stuttering and no increase at all in fps when 2 cards are enabled in SLI. Performance for me is way better with a single card than with two at least until they fix the SLI issues with this engine. I'm betting any jutter you get in VR will go away if you play with just one card and overall smoothness will increase greatly.

Ah I read your review somewhere else as one of the few I could find about ctek maybe on hovercontrol I can't recall? The problem with komodo is their delivery times and the fact that they want 50% up front. Paying $1000 now for three USB controllers that won't be delivered until July or August just doesn't sit well with me as a customer. Ctek is made in America which is another thing that I like. The problem is that I just can't find anyone that owns these things! Everyone that owns komodo loves them but that English pound is just so strong and never drops in value to the dollar which makes them a good 15-20% more expensive than ctek not to mention the wait times...
-
Frusheen how do you like the ctek pedals? I'm on the cusp of ordering them myself. Hard to find any recent reviews of their products online.

Their CEO said last week that they aren't making any money on the rift. I assume that means they are breaking even perhaps but he didn't say they were losing money on them either. I think it is priced as competitively as they could make it until the technology catches on.

Nothing on Pascal definitive until it's announced whenever that is. Nvidia never pre-annouces cost or capabilities until they release and the NDA for reviewers expires. Anything you hear until then is speculation. Oculus only charges your card once the rift ships. You might see a $1 test charge from them but that's it until it's on its way to you.

I'm not really sure how you reckon that since the rez of the OR is higher than a HD 1080P screen already? The screen door effect and CA is gone as well from all the reviews I have read about CV1. The effect should be superior in every way compared to a 1080P HD monitor.

My 6700K machine passes the test no issue but my 2600K machine fails at the processor. Everything else on the 2600K machine passes though. Not worried since I see no difference at all in DCS FPS between either machine with the same video card.

Thanks mate. Looks like I can't use my bonus cash then.

Hi, My 1.5 install is from steam and my 2.0 was downloaded from the DCS website. All of my modules other than Nevada were purchased through steam and work both in my steam installed 1.5 and my DCS website installed 2.0. I have $10 bonus cash to use and want to buy the L39 from the DCS website but also want it to show in steam and in 2.0. Will a code from a module bought from the DCS website show up in a steam installed 1.5? I know from steam to DCS it works fine but not sure about the other way around? Thanks.

I don't think so and that's never going to happen anyway. Even 90fps is a stretch imo. Some kind of asynch timewarp will be needed for most games similar to the kind used by flyinside for fsx.
-
No difference for me on vs off so I left it on. The OS should handle this natively anyway so not sure how you guys are seeing a boost?
-
Devs REALLY need to get cracking on SLI support for the edge engine now. With OR on the horizon SLI support is absolutely necessary now.
-
Derek any of those will be fine. There is no discernible difference in DCS performance for me on my 2600K at 4.6 vs my 6700K at 4.6. The video card for me made the biggest improvement.
-
It's a good time to be alive now gents with this kind of tech on the horizon for us DCS fans. Looking so forward to April and still cursing their IT staff for a crappy pre-order rollout. First world problems though :)

I'm more annoyed at the fact that their server farm utterly failed in every possible way to handle any load at all than I am about the price point! Could be because I install and manage load testing servers at work. I have to wait another month to get mine because of that!

I felt that way after installing my 3D surround setup. It's still totally immersive. The problem with it is it takes a monster rig to get any kind of fps. I am lucky to get 35fps in the city or in action with my rig in 3D surround. Sure am hoping the horsepower requirements for a similar or better experience in VR are lessened or else there will be a lot of disappointed people out there. 3D on a single monitor or flight simming at all on a single monitor for me is a non-starter. No sense of depth or distance from the ground at all. I am looking forward to comparing 3D surround to the rift. The huey is a breeze to fly compared to the mi-8. That thing is all kinds of squirrely as you go in and out of translational lift.
-
I am going to try this in the mi-8. That thing goes into VRS if you look at it sideways. I have hundreds of hours in choppers between FSX and DCS and the mi-8 is by far the hardest one I've ever flown. Much harder and squirlier than the Huey was to learn which is the opposite from what I've read online by people who fly both. The Huey is a breeze in comparison for me.
-
I fly in 3D surround so I think I have some idea of how cool the rift will be even though I have never used one before. I have a Galaxy S6 and the Samsung VR but haven't really even used it much because the apps for it are so-so at best. I am looking very forward to trying it. Just wondering how much of a pain it will be using the keyboard and mouse when you can't see what you are doing with the goggles on.

I have a 2600K at 4.6 and a 6700K at 4.6. There is absolutely ZERO difference in performance in DCS between either machine when using the same video card. There is no way that the OR will not work the same on both machines. I wouldn't put too much stock in their official 'will OR work on my machine' test. There are only a few games that I play where I see a noticeable increase in FPS between both my machines with FSX being the most noticeable which is the only reason I upgraded. I plan on purchasing P3D this week and slowly migrating to it anyway now that Orbx has released many of their updated installers.

I had no trouble switching from bank to CC when I tried to pay by paypal but either way it still failed because their server farm failed in every possible way to handle any load at all. You could still order now for a June delivery but sorry you missed out on earlier delivery Derek :(
-
My two cards got hit for six $1 charges between them. I wonder how those will drop off...or not. Total website load planning fail.
-
I have no desire to sell my current surround setup. I Plan on using surround, 3D surround and the rift in conjunction with one another for the best of all worlds! :)
-
Got mine for April. Took 32 minutes of constant clicking to get it! I also used 3 different types of payment and got pre-charged on all 3 because it kept saying something went wrong every time I tried to buy it. I assume those $1 pre-charges will drop off soon since the actual purchase never went through on two of them. Whoever is responsible for their website needs to be IMMEDIATELY fired. It never ceases to amaze me how corporate IT staff never plan for load and allow websites to go offline like this when the company knows their product will be in high demand *cough* Apple...
