  1. Can I coin a new phrase? We can use the acronym PQT (petty, querulous, toxic) Here's a breakdown from the Oxford Dictionary if you need 'sources': Petty: of little importance; trivial. (of behavior) Characterized by an undue concern for trivial matters, especially in a small-minded or spiteful way. Querulous: Complaining in a petulant or whining manner. Toxic: Very bad, unpleasant, or harmful. "a toxic relationship" Ever wonder why there's so much PQT here? I think it's because people ran off all the MSMAEs (mentally stable and mature aviation enthusiasts) with attacks on them and the ED staff. I heard Reddit is looking for people who like to bully and argue... and there are much more interesting targets in those 'teen subreddits' where the topic isn't restricted to mature, intelligent subjects such as Aerospace and breakthrough software development that elevated the flight sim genre. Sounds fun, right?
  2. INSG = "It's not so great".. which was outlined in my post that you said was INSG.. therein lies the irony! hah...
  3. So what you're saying is.. INSG? The irony!
  4. The Apache will most definitely be a mind blowing DCS module. I can also say, without reserve, that the beautiful and complex evolution of DCS over the years is such a mind blowing accomplishment that it's worthy of documentaries and cult movies. Why are some people in this thread saying otherwise? I sometimes forget until I witness again the 'invasive species' which has overrun this natural and peaceful aviation forum habitat. I speak of the Hyena barking things like 'that's not so great, I was hoping for a Cessna' or 'Why not the AH-64A? I want steam gauges!' Unfortunately, there remains only two species: 1. The 'it's not so great' crowd (INSG) 2. People who are wise and mature enough (or more likely high enough) not to get angry with group one How do I become part of the INSG crowd? Fly DCS for so many hours that you no longer have RL friends (and sometimes marriages). In between flights, come to the forums and overcompensate by putting yourself on display to deny that the very thing that consumed your life... *the only thing* that remains in your life... which still provides you with any sense of joy or accomplishment is... 'not so great'. Watch this INSG as it goes in for the kill: "What?! Shooting a supercarrier catapult in an F-18 DID NOT give me an orgasmic virtual aviation experience worth three times what I paid! (looks around) I've uh.. I've seen better.. ?" This invasive species has forced the relocation of healthy virtual pilots to other biomes. However! If you look closely, there remains a rare and endangered species of virtual pilot so wise and confident in their convictions that they can see through the INSG species and easily ignore their self-flagellations. Their level of patience is epic! To better understand this complex ecosystem, view this short clip with Louis C.K. :
  5. +10! Add 'Show Help on Assisted Startup' in the Special > F-14 menu. Remove the checkmark, no yellow boxes. RustBelt, I don't know how it is now, but I was USNA in the '90s and I saw teams read each other checklists all the time. It depended on the crew. And by the way, you always go through every checklist, no matter how many hours you have. NATOPS law. We had an AD lose his startup qual because he skipped a single step on a checklist once. I like the idea of checklist assist in the sim, it adds to the immersion in my opinion.
  6. @bad_turbulance the download on the OP is still valid (look for large text). Since the profile is based in the Saitek SST software, and not on the DCS config files, it should be good to go. Of course, since 2010 there have been some additional commands added to the sim, but I'm not sure it's important to bind them. This profile will at least give you a solid foundation. If you want to be sure you retain your old SST profile, just go into the SST profile folder and rename the FileName.pr0 file to FileName.bak. Then copy my profile into the folder. Thanks for the kind words.
  7. I had similar issues. My resolution involved taking an extra step in turning off AV, and also disabling Intel Turbo Boost Max (which was changing CPU affinity on the fly). https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=4053994#post4053994 https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=220401
  8. I had a similar problem with Trend Micro. The problem with that AV is that even when you turn off protection in the sys tray, there's still a lot going on in the background. I found an easy solution; open Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit from the programs menu (installed by default), select Uninstall tab, select Stop All Components. This doesn't uninstall the app, it just disables everything Trend Micro all at once (unlike disabling it from the systray). I leave the diag window open so I'll remember to re-enable after exiting DCS.
  9. Be careful when forcing DCS to particular CPU cores, in my experience the software doesn't play nice when you do this. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=220401
  10. Thanks mrwell. My wife assures me that it's ugly LOL. It's ok though; foo foo and tea upstairs, aviation and whiskey downstairs... that's the deal. TripRodriguez, I "calibrate my brain" by touching certain points on the dash before startup. I grab either side of the ufc while looking at it, then I touch the bottom corners of the MFDs while looking at them and "consciously calibrating". I do this every time and it seems to help. I don't even look down for button pushes unless I'm interacting with menus.
  11. That's what I did. It worked out better than I thought it would. When I reach for a button in VR it's there IRL. I'd like to have gloves so I can see my hands, but it's not really necessary since the physical buttons are in the same place as in VR. I didn't bother to model anything but what I use most in flight. For startup and shutdown I don't mind using the mouse. I modeled it in Sketchup and used a real Hornet cockpit pic as the texture of the dash so I could line everything up. The whole thing cost about $400. When I want to fly I just spin over there in my office chair. - Vertical buttons and Crs/Hdg toggles on the UFC are from a $20 arcade game kit that came with a usb circuit board - amazon.com (toggles are the arcade joysticks with the ball threads cut off) - Horizontal UFC buttons are XK-8 programable keys from amazon.com - The keypad is a cheap $10 pad I bought from amazon and removed some keys - The dash shroud is a shop mat that I turned upside down heheh I know it's ugly, but I can't see it when I'm flying, I can only feel it. That's why I didn't even bother to paint it haze grey... black minimizes it's ugliness in my office. I'll create a new post soon with the Sketchup plans and materials links.
  12. Came to the forums looking for best IAS for AAR in Hornet.. left remembering why I don't come to the forums anymore. Be civil and kind to one another.. there's plenty of other sites where you can argue and grief people to ease your own pain.. reddit would welcome you with open arms... There's 82 people reading this post right now figuring out how to best contradict it...
  13. Coxy_99, is it possible you have Intel Turbo Boost Max running? DCS hates it. I spent several hours troubleshooting similar symptoms before I figured this one out, and I've been in systems architecture for 20+ yrs. More info: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=220401 If you're looking for a good USB powered hub this is a really good choice. 4amp with individual switching. Some other games and apps I use complain when the Warthog is plugged in, plus when I'm flying I like to turn off unused USB devices. This one does the trick: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F69PWZB/
  14. I prefer the official DCS manual. Since this is undeniably a study sim, and I was conditioned to NATOPS while in the Navy, I don't fly a bird until I read the manual. I can't imagine why they wouldn't release it with the module.. beta or not. It's been 1.5 years. They couldn't still be making design decisions could they? As a software developer myself I can tell you that method is a frustrating and futile way to run a project. I don't see myself investing in their study sim products in the future if they don't provide study material.
  15. A forum search turned up no updated information on when the new textures might be released. Anyone know?
  16. You're welcome Whirlaway. I struggled with this for a long time before realizing it was something simple. I've linked this thread in other discussions and it's corrected issues for a number of people. I hope that ED starts performing some sort of process detection to see if TBM is running so they can pop a warning during DCS start that advises deactivating it. I can't imagine how many people simply think DCS is bad software because they're experiencing this problem but lack systems analysis expertise to be able to troubleshoot it on their own.
  17. This trick doesn't seem to work anymore. Apaches started spinning wildly and crashed into one another. Anyone know another way to make AI Helos go into a hover (without mods)?
  18. BitMaster, that's a different thing. You're referring to dynamic core *frequency* (and Intel Speedstep). We're discussing core *affinity*. You can change the affinity of individual applications to only use certain cores. Apparently DCS doesn't like to be told which core to use and when. As a loose example: Overriding dynamic frequency would be setting Core0 and Core6 to a 47 multiplier, and leaving all other cores at 43 in your BIOS. CPU Affinity would be right clicking on a process in task manager, selecting 'Set Affinity' and unchecking all other cores to force the app to only use Core0 and Core6. In the case of Intel Turbo Boost Max, it does something like dynamic affinity by taking over which cores are used by the application instead of letting the application do it. In other words, TBM might favor Core0 and Core6 where DCS is trying to use Core1 and Core3. Something about the way DCS is coded makes the performance degrade severely if it doesn't have exactly the core it wants when it wants it.
  19. I'm leaving affinity to auto and performance is extremely good. Yes, max performance on power management and also 'Prefer Max Performance' on the vid card power management. I have a 1500watt power supply, it's not like I'm trying to maintain a good carbon footprint :)
  20. Yeah, I think the software comes with i9 and extreme edition processors. My 7900x is both. Great processor. Previously extreme edition processors had great multithread performance, but poor single core (making them bad for DCS). The fastest chip on the market now, the i9-7980XE benches at #20 for single core performance, but #1 for multicore and overall bench. The 7900x is #7 for multi and #7 for single, having the fastest single core speed of the i9s (i7s still hold top scores). Most chips that are high in one category are very low in the other. I got this one because it's high in both while having the new i9 architecture, and I wasn't sure if ED will be introducing multithread capabilities in the near future. I sure hope so. Bit off topic.. but FYI.
  21. I just upgraded to an i9-7900x 10core, 32g RAM HyperX at 2933, 1tb M.2 drive, 1tb SSD, EVGA 1080ti FTW3 overclocked, CPU/GPU water cooled. With that hardware, I fully expected to max out on FPS. On first run my performance was horrible, and just a small fraction of what my 3yr old system was. I checked my DCS settings, removed and reinstalled the app, checked my nVidia settings.. everything, to no avail. 3dmark Timerunner benchmarks were showing me with a top 100 score of over 13k.. so why was DCS running at an average of 15fps? The answer is: Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology. This software was on by default. It claims that it can find your best cores and redirect chunks of code to them to span the workload out, even if the app doesn't support multithreading. DCS hates this... Loading DCS the first time, my symptoms were as follows: Canopy glass was black for 2+ minutes Hitting F11 to look around at bases showed buildings hovering over water.. textures weren't loading My FPS never went above 30, even at the lowest settings My CPU was getting uncommonly hot, and my GPU utilization was jumping all over the place. To be clear, the 3dMark Timerunner benchmark was running fine. I ran hardware scans and found nothing. I had reloaded DCS and tweaked my settings, but nothing worked. When I unchecked ENABLED on Intel Turbo Boost Max on my systray, my performance shot up to 100+ FPS at full settings. See attached pics. After resolving the problem, I searched the DCS forums and found that MackTheKnight had already figured it out here https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3517089#post3517089, and he did a good write up, but it was buried in a thread about CPU affinity. The symptoms from TBM are similar to customizing your CPU affinity for DCS, so if TBM is off and you still have a problem, check your affinity. 22. Fickle-P is the pronunciation for FCLP, for those who didn't know. One of my favorite military backronyms.
  23. Hey Bignewy! I was getting the same error about an hour into flight. My drivers and OS were all updated, but I found that card overclocking was causing the issue. I'm running EVGA Precision to overclock my 1080ti using 'power target' and clock offsets. After setting Precision to default values for the card, I no longer experienced the crash. So it seems your theory from the other thread was also correct; hot card. Thank you, once again.
