I have downloaded the ABRIS video from

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=133&scr=products&lang=en

and it worked fine.

the basic flight video installation file is telling me it is corrupted and to obtain another copy. I deleted the first one which I got from HTTP mirror one and tried from FTP mirror one and got the same result.

Are they the same file? and has anyone else had a problem with these videos?:huh:

thanks

What the...? Why are those .exe files? Personally, I never start executable files that are supposed to contain a video, even if the source appears as legitimate as the ED site. Besides, what about Mac or Linux users who want to watch those vids? C'mon ED, please publish pure video files as was the case with the other videos available over there.

Same result here, must be a bad file.

the .exe files put the vid in BlackShark and you view them within the sim. they show up in the training section.

Need to give it a try. But couldn't that be done with Track files? Is there a need for the .exe?

Besides, there are some really simple mechanisms to validate downloads (MD5 and SHA1 sums for example). IMO it is very important that any file hoster supplies these simple checksums so that people can check whether they downloaded the right file and whether it survived the transfer. That doesn't help you with that apparently broken file, but you could at least tell it's not related to the download or the mirror.

The track Files are the reason the EXE is necessary. The Patch broke the tracks and it is a lot of work to put them back together again. Videos are a sensible alternative.

Now I'm even more confused. I just launched Combat_Employment_Video_EN.exe. It did something, then (after asking me to confirm that I was aware that it was done doing what it was supposed to be doing, which I did) exited. No new start menu shortcuts for Windows, no new desktop icons, and I didn't find any new options in BS either. The button "Training" just informs me that the training requires a pre 1.0.2 version (I'd never even seen that dialog before, so I obviously didn't even try the training tracks after 1.0.2 came out :-) )

I noticed the installer said it was installing something to %DCS_APP_FOLDER%\training (*), but that's it. Inside that folder and following the subfolders I finally found the folders "1" and "2" with a lesson.lua each and lesson_19.ogv and lesson_20.ogv respectively in them.

The lesson.lua (in "2" folder) contains this:

lesson =
{
file = 'lesson_20.ogv',
name = 'Flight Communications and Data Link',
description = 'In this lesson you`ll learn how to command a wing of up to four Ka-50 and use the data link to send and receive targeting and navigation data between flight members.',
keySort = 2
}

I must be missing a hell of a lot here. Why the .exe? What are those .lua files good for? Where can I navigate to those lessons either in Windows or in Black Shark? And finally, the really important files appear to be plain Theora video files. Why not simply publish these video files? The codec is widely supported and the files can be played by VLC (which is totally free software) and probably most other media players around.

Looks to me as if things are made much more complicated than they need to be - simply publishing the video files as video files would do the trick IHMO.

(*) By %DCS_APP_FOLDER% I mean the DCS Black Shark installation directory.

I'm guessing what these installers should do is add these videos to the training menu in game, like the FC2 training Vids. However it seems that this is not what's happening. The Video *.ogm is being installed in the Training folder, but the BS training menu is not being altered to reflect this.

You mean they're trying to fix the "Training" button that so many people asked about after BS was released on Steam? I agree, that would make a lot of sense. Is there any official word about it? Would make more sense to continue this discussion on a thread dedicated to that issue.

Back to the original problem, I started downloading Basic_Flight_Procedures_Video_EN.exe from the top of the list server HTTP 1 (USA). The download was so slow I tried some of the mirrors:

  • HTTP 2 (Russia): Waiting a few seconds, then blank screen (as in: transfer finished, no bytes received)
  • HTTP 3 (USA): waiting for almost 10 seconds, then offering a file with ~319.8MB
  • FTP 1 (USA): offering file with ~586.7 MB
  • FTP 2 (Russia): 404 File not found
  • FTP 3 (USA): Offering file with ~319.8 MB
  • FTP 4 (Germany): 404 File not found

There must be at least two different files. That is not what I expect from a mirror. Could someone responsible look into this (ie at least fix the broken links and clearly indicate high/low quality downloads)?

Apart from the basic flight procedures file problem. the other two i downloaded. ABRIS and the weapons one worked fine and installed the vids or tracks, I dont know which, to my training section from the GUI. I am on the Steam version which I believe is 1.02. I don't think the exe itself is at fault except for the corrupted one. Having said that I did not try from one of the other mirrors yet. perhaps i posted in the wrong area.

These must be for the Steam version only (I'm guessing) I just downloaded and installed the ABRIS vid. Still Nothing in the Training menu.

Just to test this out, I have the Combat Employment, Preflight Preparation and Abris installed now, and the training menu refuse to come up. I'll dig around later to see what I can find, that might cause this.

I was coming to the same conclusion Nate. I don't have Steam version. I installed the vids okay (that creats a new folder called Training), the training menu is still telling me to remove patch however.

Version 1.0.2

Just wmv versions would be fine so I can watch them on my phone on my next flight.

This is such a Major disappointment. I just found this thread after trying countless times to "install" these training Videos. I guess what disappoints me the most is that nobody in a position to post a quick note on that page about these files not working with a standard BS 1.0.2 install, bothered to take the five whole minutes to make a post about the issue. I am sure that there have been many who did the same as myself only to stumble across this thread. Since I am new to this forum I would like to ask a question while implying absolutely nothing negative , Is this entire site run this way?:cry:

P.S. unlike some, I'm not picky, I don't give a damned about the video format .mkv, .avi, .wmv, absolute ANY Video format would be fine, I can convert anything to anything, but I CAN'T convert an .EXE to any video format!

I downloaded all videos from HTTP 1 (USA) except Basic_Flight_Procedures_Video_EN.exe which I get from HTTP 3 (USA).

All videos works well (DVD version), but I had to make small modification to override Training menu message box.

This modification can be found here.
