Shaman Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Okey, so I've moved to new place and I don't have any technical possibilities to bring that old big heavy 19'' CRT from my old place (my car has been totaled recently and I travel now by plane only). I want to come back to Lock On world. I've already brought my desktop PC and need a new monitor for it. What do you think should be better now, classic 4:3 19'' LCD or widescreen 16:9 22'' LCD monitor? Any idea what is the diffrence in screen height? I believe in 22'' widescreen height is significantly less then classic 4:3 19''. Am I right? How will it fit with Lock On. I need to decide quickly. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
Highwayman-Ed Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Absolutely, 100% get the 22" inch widescreen. Widescreen adds so much to lockon, you just need to tweak the graphics.cfg to change the aspect to 16:9 Intel i9-9900KF @5.2GHz MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon 32GB G.Skill Trident Z DDR3200 RAM MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio 40" Panasonic TH-40DX600U @ 4K Pimax Vision 8K Plus / Oculus Rift CV1 / HTC Vive Gametrix JetSeat with SimShaker Windows 10 64 Bit Home Edition [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

TorwaK Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 ok then its easy to say get a 22" monitor you'll be happy... but unfortunatelly not. If you don't have 2 x 8800GTX SLi don't dream about it. To make it work Lock-On 1680*1050 which is native resolution of 22" monitors with full details, you need really fast computer otherwise you can't get more than 35-40FPS normally. Btw if you get many planes around of your plane in game, your FPS can decrease to 10FPS even :) Usullay I get 70-80FPS with my spec but its because of I overclocked my computer and I pushed the limits. If I were you, I would like to get 20" 4:3 monitor certain and run Lock-On with 1280*1024 native resolution. Don't forget experience is talking here. I'll be the first to admit that my system is a little higher spec'd than most, but I get excellent framerates (locked at 30) @1920x1200x32 (Intel Core 2 X6800 EE, 1GB ASUS GeForce 7950GX2). I get slowdowns to about 20 fps occassionally over cities when the heat is on, but nothing that creates a slideshow. If you're not confident at running the native resolutions, then knock it down to 1366x768 the benefit of having that wide view is almost as comparable as flying with or without a Track IR for me, I couldn't fly without it. Most LCDs now days can handle non native resolutions superbly, and this monitor will last you a good few years. It's well worth investigating. Kuky Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 lockon is CPU limited... not video card. An ATI x1950xtx does just fine in 1680x1050 4xFSAA and 4xAF. It's all about the CPU here... but admitably x1950xtx is not a shabby card either ;) PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR

Shaman Posted August 3, 2007 Author Posted August 3, 2007 PROBLEM FSX, Battlefield 2142 and Cronicles of Riddick , all games work like a charm. Tried both 1680x1050 and 1440x900 EDIT: Yeah! Lock On works! Looks really great. Thanks for all your advice. I had to reinstall the thing though. Lots of things to set up left for me then. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer

Kuky Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 jonob66... I'm pretty sure that video card will not be sufficient for 22" resolutions (1680x1050). 941st_Rage... for 30" you'll need 2xVGU's in SLI or Crossfire and the reason is resolution for 30" is over 1x DVI throughoutput so you need 2x DVI links... meaning 2x Video cards. No I think just one will do...the 8800 series for example have a dual dvi output so a single card can drive a 30" monitor. I believe sli/xfire is only necessary to boost framerates, which according to most benchmarks, are completely acceptable with an 8800gtx @ 2560x1900. Im just holding out on buying a widescreen till i upgrade my computer, widescreen prices are in a bit of a freefall right now. Kuky Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 ah yeah you're right... 1 top-of-the-line video card can drive 30" monitor as they all have 2xDVI links but concerning frame rates I think SLI/Crossfire is a must for such high resolutions.
