Mission Briefing

Captain, your task is to fetch a package from USS Carl Vinson and deliver it to a courier in Kutaisi. I'll give you the full mission briefing in flight.

For now, I'm on a tight schedule myself for an important meeting. Join me in the Huey. I'll fly to my meeting. Once I'm there, you take the Huey and embark on your mission.

I've had my adjutant compile a few pictures for your mission, best take a look at them now.

As soon as you're ready, join me in the chopper, I'd like to get airborne.

About

"Operation Paperboy" is a story-driven, non-combat, single-play mission in which you have to perform three consecutive flights:

• Courier #1 Huey
  
• Courier #2 A-10C
  
• Courier #3 Huey Kutaisi
  

It is therefore required that you have both the UH-1H and the A-10C module for this mission to work.

You also need to be able to fly these aircraft with the same controller setup or DCS may not be able to detect changed controllers in-game, e.g. if your controller profile changes the way the controllers are exported to DirectX.

The first leg of the mission is flown by the Commanding Officer, who will use this flight to brief you on the details of the mission. This flight uses DCS' track playback. If you encounter problems with the playback or if you get bored, you can hit ESC and take control at any point.

Expected mission duration circa 90 minutes.

Note: The mission lists Ukraine as the only enemy faction. This is in no way intended as a statement of any kind. It just proved too difficult, time-consuming and error-prone to change coalitions midway in mission development. :(

Intended Audience

Obviously anyone interested in combined Huey + Warthog missions. You should be able to perform a cold start with both aircraft, but of course you could also use the "Start procedure" cheat.

You should be able to perform basic navigation in both aircraft.

Possibly the most demanding tasks include landing a Huey on a moving aircraft carrier and landing an A-10C on the short runway of Kutaisi West airfield.

In theory, you should be able to exchange the types of aircraft used in the Mission Editor (e.g. if you have the Ka-50 module but not the Huey), but this has not been tested and may or may not work in terms of playback and story-telling-pace.

The mission contains some swearing and profanity.

Known Issues

• The recorded first flight uses track playback and may not work reliably. If it doesn't, you should take control and follow the flight plan at approximately 70 knots so that the CO has time to finish his briefing before you drop him off at the resort. Use the kneeboard if you're unsure about the flight plan.
  
• Developed in DCS World 1.2.7, tested and working up to 1.2.16. May or may not work in older or newer versions.
  
• Up to DCS World 1.2.7 (and, possibly, newer versions), stopping distance in the A-10C is actually shorter with Anti Skid switched off. If you find it too difficult to land at Kutaisi West, you could try switching Anti Skid off before you land.
  
• Ambient fixed wing aircraft at Batumi won't start when triggered because of a known bug with late activation. Fixed in DCS World 1.2.8
  
• Number 2 in a flight of ambient Apaches used to crash on RTB for no apparent reason. May or may not happen when you fly the mission.

i just tried this mission, but while letting the CO fly at the begining, he hit a parked helo, broke our tail rotor, and ending up colliding with an airpot building nearby .... next time i'll fly it myself ;)

Damn, need to learn how to fly a Huey :) Yurgon, any chances for online lessons once I finish TEW and buy rudder pedals ?

Yeah, you should do that. :)

That intro part relies on the track playback, which in itself is unreliable.

I think on top of that, the flight dynamic was tweaked by a patch some time ago and the playback doesn't even work on my machine any longer. I think I'll re-record that intro flight and update the mission. That's still no guarantee it'll work for everyone, but at least it might work for some people.

In the mean time, if you take control and slowly fly towards the outpost so that the CO has time to tell you all the details, you should be fine. :)

Absolutely! :thumbup:

It's just such a fun helicopter to fly, very responsive, very seat-of-the-pants. It takes some time to develop the necessary muscle memory, and like all helicopters there are some rather funny concepts to wrap your head around, but once you understand them, you should be able to apply them to most helicopters, including the Ka-50 despite its radically different rotor system. :)

Mission updated. I re-recorded the intro-flight. In my playback, it works flawlessly, so I hope others won't have any problems there, either, but if it doesn't work, you can always hit ESC and take control.

I'll have to swap a shark in for the Huey (or learn to fly the Huey :lol: ) but I'll definitely check this out!

Well the whole point was to have a single player mission with several different aircraft (and to find out if and how this works), and to challenge the player with landing the A-10C at a relatively short airstrip.

It shouldn't be too difficult to swap the A-10C for a Huey, but then the leg from Batumi to Kutaisi West would take a lot longer, the exchange of aircraft wouldn't make sense any longer, some messages would need to be changed (the "Drop your fuel tank into the Black Sea" part), the flight plan for the A-10C leg doesn't make sense for the Huey, the timings for some triggered events would need to be checked, and the whole thing tested.

Since there are lots of great Huey-missions out there, I don't think this would make a lot of sense, sorry.

IIRC I chose a Creative Commons license so you're free to do it yourself and also upload the mission once you've modified it (as long as you name me as the original author, basically). If you ever wanted to get into mission building, this might be a good start. :thumbup:

Err, you mean public server? Sure, but it's a Single Player mission, so that wouldn't make much sense unless you drastically changed it. :thumbup:
