A very serious AI landing problem (bug)

When the AI are flying in pairs, they have big problems with landings (1.2.8 release version). They always seem to attempt a landing in pair but just before touchdown they will interrupt the landing for a go around and either crash in the process or repeat it until they run out of fuel. It seems to affect all aircraft (though I haven't tested all), I am sending tracks for Su-27, Su-25, Mig-29, F-15. See the attached tracks (all aircraft have 30% fuel, AI set to excellent):

Same here, I have been facing the issue from a long time now, but IA on some planes behaves strangely.

Sometime they refuse to escort the assign group, or they fail badly when RTB... turning and turning around in the sky until they run out of fuel....

The work-around ? Just change the aircraft type (I used to set Su-27) and nothing more, the pilots will get their brain back ! But it prevents us from using a lot of aircrafts in the game...

This also happens when you are doing a pair landing with your wingman. He will pull up at the last second and fly around until he runs out of fuel.

yup! I have had that happen with wingmen in earlier versions of DCS. I always thought it was perhaps my approach which kinda made him break off. But i never wait around to bother see him land and end the mission once I am parked.

Guess what? If the flight plan attempts to tell the AI to land at a high speed, or at an angle, they won't land. You must set the speed for the landing approach very low, like 130, and it must be straight also. They won't land with brains!

I saw this problem with A-10Cs a minute ago, with both my wingman and full AI pairs. When I touch down, keeping the brakes off to let my wingman hit ground and slow, my wingman full-throttles anyways and goes around for another landing, this time successfully. With the AI, I see both planes ready to land fine, but when #1 hits their speed brakes immediately upon touchdown, #2 goes around. Shortly after that #1 freaks out, nearly dips a wing into tarmac, closes their brakes, and does the same.

I just watched a couple of F5s for an hour (at multi speed) do approaches then cancel at the last minute when the wingman joined up... they'd break then by the time they got to about 30 seconds out the wingman would join up again and they'd break... over and over and over again.

Unfortunately I'm used to it saving a track automatically since I only do MP unless testing missions (why doesn't it auto save single player tracks anyway?)

Anyway- I'll run it again and post.

The mission is using the SNAFU random air traffic script. I thought maybe it was something in there causing it until I saw this thread.

A bunch of the aircraft have it happen but the longest seemed to be the F5.

This is one of the biggest IA issue in DCS.

Just create a simple flight plan in-between 2 AB, with a big distance between the 2 last points to let the IA to manage the approach (camsr is wrong, IA is supposed to land in herself). Put several units into the group. Put the AI skill to excellent. Play the mission with Mig-29, they won't land properly. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING but the type of aircraft: Su-27. They will do the job. Why is IA different ?

I increased the skill to excellent and slowed the aircraft down slightly in the script used to generate random AI.

Many of the aircraft, I was surprised to see, landed reasonably quickly after a couple tries. Some by role reversal (where the wingman landed first) and others just managed...

But towards the end of the track for about the last half hour's worth or so an pair of F-15Es just go around and around...

I've posted a log and a track... not sure it'll contribute anything- but here it is.

Frustrating.

This is an interesting point but I'm not sure we can set the speed at which the AI actually land. If I set the AI to head to the "landing point" at 280... doesn't it head there at 280 and then go through its landing routine at its own described speed and slow down to whatever it would be with whatever loadout? I would expect that speed would be automated. I suppose if the AI isn't slowing down to go through its routine, that would cause issues...

Yes it is.

And IA bugs also happen in other tasks, like escorting. Plan some transporting flight (Il-76), add 3-planes group with escorting task to the Il-76 at first waypoint (take-off from another AB to be sure that there is no issue with Il-76), a few minutes after take-off, and you will face troubles with some units like Mig-23, Mig-29S, etc... (they will orbit at waypoint1) but replace them by Su-27 with no other change, and escorting is completed the way you were expecting it.

It has been the case for years now.
