What do you want in a MP or SP mission?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I'm working with the mission editor to create a new WW2 multiplayer mission. I have a couple of cool ideas and I kind of know how I could implement them, but I began to realize that it doesn't matter if you have ideas if people are not interested in them.

I decided to create this topic to gather input for mission-makers. I know there's a couple of very talented individuals here, and I'm pretty sure they would be glad to have a thread with some suggestions. So here it is.

When playing a single-player of a multiplayer mission, what are you looking for? What do you guys want to do? What feature have you wanted for ages but never found in a server? What motivates a player to stay in a server? What makes a mission interesting? What makes it boring?

What if the mission was not only about dogfighting but about being part of a larger scale operation? Small actions could have an impact on the battle and trigger troop movement. What kind of actions would you want to do? Control an airspace zone? Destroy command vehicles? Destroy an airfield? Destroy ships? Fight against AI flights?

Personally, I always thought that the issue with big maps was that it is sometimes hard to find someone to fight. I think that part of the solution is to create hot zones (or objective zones) where people have an incentive to go and stir up some trouble. Not only to dogfight, but also to accomplish actions that have a direct incidence on the outcome of the mission. These actions would not necessarily be to bomb a tank... they could be varied, interesting, and not always combat-related.

Since this is in the WW2 section I am going to assume that you only want our answers regarding WW2.

In an SP mission, I look for something with re playability and that requires you to cold start the aircraft. This can pretty much be anything from bombing to shooting down enemies, just please don't overdo it on the AAA :D

For MP, a good mission has something for everyone to do, it doesn't have extremely long flight times, and should have good base defence to prevent vulching. Something like a mass dogfight like in the old IL-2 days would be great, or have a bunch of ground targets that one side must protect, and the other side must destroy?

I'm just throwing ideas out here but I hope it helps you :)

I've been thinking about diving in and learning the editor to make some simple missions. Basically setup a frontline area maybe around a city but actually have units for one side attacking with the other one defending. Not sure how the triggering system works but would have the attacking side either waiting for a resupply convoy or moving to a certain point and having it pause for supplies. Defending side would be rushing reinforcements to the front so there would be ground attack possibilities for both sides. You could also put in an area where bridges come into play. Include light flak in the convoy and in the frontline areas to make it fun.

This is something I've been toying with making when when I get time to learn the system. Could throw in some Ai air units to cover the convoy route so Air to air guys are happy when servers are empty. Not sure if I can setup Air Ai units to attack ground units to make it important to cover the ground units ASAP. Maybe set the bases as the final destination of ground forces to make that portion just as important.

I prefer multiplayer missions with an emphasis on combat with other humans. I'll escort a bomber or transport, defend airspace, sweep enemy territory, etc. I'm not a fan of maps with a lot of ground attack because my experience is that many will suicide to complete the objectives and "win."

I do remember those IL2 Sturmovik dogfight times :D

So, for the moment I am looking for some fast dogfights. I don't care about balancing, I am enjoying a lot the flights having enemy on my pipers.

Short distances, good terrain with some valeys in it, plenty of players.... this is what I am really looking about WWII era.

I do like objective oriented missions also, but those means that you have to close colaborate with your team, to get a proper moment to login so that the mission triggers gives you objectives to do, all that are translating in longer time to spend in order to enjoy some actions.

To conclude: during working week days I would prefer fast paced dogfights, while during weekends I might go onboard for some colaborative large scale missions.

I'm not great with the mission editor myself, but what I'd really like to see in a MP server is a multi-mission semi-dynamic "campaign". Especially with the WWII map, a D-day campaign would be awesome. I guess the mission maker would make one mission, and the server could run it, and the mission maker could take the info on who won, how much they killed, and make another mission, (maybe from pre made template?) using those numbers, and the location of the ground troops. The server could then run these campaign missions once a week, to give time for the mission maker to edit the next mission.

These missions would have objectives, but maybe to put an emphasis on air fighting, you wouldn't need all of them to win, or maybe AI bombers (once available - Sithspawn you were working on a B-17 right?) would attack ground targets, and the fighters could do escort/intercept, while P-47s and other attackers (Is VEAO making a Typhoon?) could also go for the ground targets.

TL; DR, a WWII semi-dynamic MP campaign, running once a week, with objectives, but an emphasis on a2a.

Everything you mention you like to see is incorporated in our newest mission "Mustangs vs Doras" on the DoW Server. We have 3 hot zones per side right next to each other as well the enemy airfield. The flak zones ore my definitive and make spotting air contacts easy. There are 80+ ground targets per side to attack as well as the air targets in order to reach 150 points for your team first.

Which is all well and good, Hattrick... but as much as I like Dogs of War, the goal of this thread is not to promote a server but more to find ideas that you guys didn't think of yet.

No worries at all. Wasn't trying to promote our server or hijack your thread. Of course more ideas are always welcome for the entire community.

I began working a more immersive airfields using static objects. They do not take much space (and should not, in theory affect FPS too much if used with moderation), which is great. Static buildings will also "camouflage" a-historical objects like missile launchers, helicopters and those pesky russian biplanes. What do you guys think? I am also working on realistic tail numbers. Each individual aircraft has a distinct serial number and callsign on the radio. Radio frequencies will also be properly configured for each airplane (2 channels for 2 friendly ATC towers, 1 channel for Command and 1 channel for misc).

I'd like a SP mission where we (player+AI) catch an enemy airport off-guard, and we try to destroy as many planes on the ground as possible, before they scramble. Secondary mission - take down all enemy aircraft that made it off the ground. Tertiary mission - ground targets, like hangars, trucks, etc.

Cold start would be great.
