1.58 - Cockpit Mipmaps not used?

Knock-Knock

Recommended Posts

Every pixel in the cockpit is fighting for screen time, so its quite noisy. The text / labels primarily. VR in this case, but it happens in 1080p too. As if the textures dont have mipmaps, or the cockpit doesnt utilize mipmaps.

Using High texture setting. Dont see it happen in the Mirage for example.

Yes its looks like it. Very noisy text in the cockpit for me as well.

I just had a look at one of the textures in the cockpit folder, no mips.

and none on the liveries too.

In my install, I've converted all the liveries to have them, the default aircraft textures also, but not the cockpit yet.

This problem is being fixed by our texturer.

Mipmaps are used for distance rendering, please explain exactly what you are saying, cause Mipmaps will make the text blurry/lower res in the cockpit. As seen here...

Focus on the UFC, the instruments and MPCDs are not done only a few textures Mipmapped to show results.

The exterior is getting Mipmapped cause of course the aircraft can move far away so that is only natural to do it for LOD (level of detail) but I just don't see the need for Mipmaps for something that will be in your face at all times.

A 4K pixel cockpit panel may only take up a small fraction of the viewed area even though the distance is small in "game terms", in 3D distance terms it is still significant. Ideally, the 4K should only be used when zoomed close in on a panel, its wasting resources and creating artifacts otherwise. Adding mips may give a performance increase also, though the files themselves will be slightly bigger, but you could zip the whole folder up to compensate. It took me around 15 minutes to convert them.

I've already converted the cockpit textures to DXT5 with Kaiser MIPMAPs for my own use and IMO they look alot better, if you wish to try them they are uploaded here

Really hard to explain in words, and cant show it with a screenshot.

But since no mip maps are being used, and you have X size texture space, using a 4k texture for example, resulting in a given label text being 30px high, but when you then view it ingame, from a given distance, it might only require 10px high at that point, so each pixel is constantly fighting to be visible, and you as a result you get a lot of shimmering / visual noise. Labels/Text shows it the most, but any contrasted detail, be it the edges of the UFC panel buttons, have shimmering.

Maybe the textures without mipmaps work fine in 4K screen res, but in 1080p, or VR, it doesnt.

Been flying with Mustang's MIPMAP's since launch, literally, and they are great. He caught me in TS about 30 second into my first Free Flight with the Harrier, so Ive honesty only spent 30 seconds in the cockpit WITHOUT them...

They look fantastic in VR.
