SharpeXB Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I upgraded to this card and am surprised DCS still taxes it beyond it's limit. This is an fps test on "Blockade" from FC3, with all settings maxed. This is a worst case test, in the air I will get a solid 60fps No matter what the MSAA setting the stripes on those transports always flicker and look terrible, I don't notice any fps or quality difference between 4xmsaa and 16xmsaa or 8q. Setting AA to override through Nvidia CP changes nothing either. The only Nvidia CP setting I have found to be beneficial is Adaptive VSynch, otherwise they are all at default. Are there better CP setting to use? Is more RAM the solution for the system described below? i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
danilop Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) Everything maxed out in DCS brings the fastest card to its knees, as you found out ... Do a search on graphics settings ... it makes HUGE difference. this thread for example: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=107551 P.S. 8GB RAM is plenty for DCS Edited February 9, 2014 by danilop

Kuky Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 To get rid of the flickering on textures you need to use Supersampling AA mode (at least that's what its called on AMD cards) through you video card driver settings. The shimmering is because if you use Multisampling or Adoptive Multisampling AA mode, the alpha channel (or whatever new layerer on textures they added - which was added to lot of textures past many updates) is not Anti-aliased, and that's what causes shimmering... problem is, Supersampling AA mode makes high performance hit. Mustang Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Supersampling AA is just the best, if i could find a way to run with it 24/7 with good FPS i'd be in heaven :)
danilop Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I'm using these control panel settings on GTX770 (bold). Smooth gameplay, solid FPS.
*Rage* Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I would love to see a comparison between a 780ti and 290 in just DCS.... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22

danilop Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Mirrors OFF. And I have this tweak in the graphics.lua High = { ... structures = {20, 10000}; ... } Lowest FPS about 30 on busy airports. Much higher in the air. System spec in the sig.

danilop Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) OP got 24 FPS on 780 ti in this scene. I've got 40 on GTX770. Careful tweaking is nessesary for optimal performance in DCS Edited February 9, 2014 by danilop

SharpeXB Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) If I understand correctly, the bottleneck for a high-end GPU in DCS is your CPU. Even running 2x Titans the objects take up your CPU and since the sim isn't optimized for multi-core you'll take a hit. Even that scene posted above is playable though. The low FPS is only present for that view direction. Once airborne is goes up to 60. The Adaptive V Synch in Nvidia CP makes those low rates smooth enough that they're not bothersome. Applying danilop's CP settings (thanks! it looks much better) and the attached graphic settings and then running a more realistic test for average frame rate by constantly looking around as in real gameplay results in an average FPS of 48 Increasing visib range to high drops this to 40, so med is preferable to me. Setting AA to 8q or 16q has no effect on FPS Edited February 11, 2014 by SharpeXB i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
Cobra847 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Supersampling renders the scene at a higher resolution and consequently downsamples the output. Hence the massive performance hit. Nicholas Dackard Founder & Lead Artist Heatblur Simulations https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/
SharpeXB Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) A good deal of experimenting with various benchmark missions gets me to the following setting. AA beyond 8xQ I can't make out the difference on my display. The test is to watch a light pole at the base for flickering, at this setting it appears as a solid line. The most difficult scenario to run is a mission from the Shore Campaign which must involve many objects because I can have my frame rate drop to 7. This was greatly improved to 30 by changing TSAA in NCP to multisampling rather than 8x supersample and in-game AA to 8xQ. The first mission in GH Campaign has a fence for you to look at an even that setting is a great improvement. Visibility range can be compromised without a great deal to notice, it affects textures on the far mountains but not much else that's noticeable and it's preferable to me to have things close up drawn better. Those benchmarks are only extremes, most mission will run 60fps in the air easily. EDIT: I think these settings caused DCS to crash. When I switched back to the defaults from NCP my problems stopped Edited September 6, 2014 by SharpeXB i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
