Schredder Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hi All I currently have an Intel i7 3770K with 16GB Z77 CS system. I have the GTX 670 and everything is great. (1920X1080). This model: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4211#ov Now, I'm going to be running a 4K display soon and thinking about upgrading the GPU card. My budget allows me to choose between the two: 1:GTX 780 3G 2:R9 290 4G What will you recommend ?! Please expand about your selection. Cheers, Nir Bar "Schredder" "In the warrior code there's no surrender, though his body says stop, his spirit cries... NEVER !!!"
Rhinox Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 What about option 3: get one more GTX670 and run them in SLI? I think you would get about the same performance as from single GTX780, for less money... But if you can sell your old 670, then probably GTX780 is the best option (as of now). NVidia-GPU based cards are simply better in DCS than those with AMD/ATI-chips. What happens with EDGE is a question mark, but it is "behind the corner" for a few years. No reason to wait with hw-upgrade... So if I were you, I'd probably go with GiBy GTX780 (GHz-edition). That beast is incredibly fast. Comes factory-overclocked, and yet can still be clocked a little higher, and its performance is somewhere between "Titan" and "Ti". Should be enough even for 4k...
xxJohnxx Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I am happy with my Asus Direct CU II GTX780OC. I am running two of them in SLI which did not do anything for DCS performance though. Maybe you want to go for the GTX780Ti imstead for a SLI setup! Check out my YouTube: xxJohnxx Intel i7 6800k watercooled | ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 | 32 GB RAM | Asus GTX1080 watercooled
Darkwolf Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Dcs run well on my 4yrs old ati. Unsure chip brand has an effect. I had the same question regarding upgrade. Finally went for two r9 270, as i need a lot of output. To research brand/model, i recommend the site futuremark, home of the graphic test software 3dmark. It lists all the cpu/gpu and allows you to compare specs, price and performance, taken out of thousands and thousands of tests from their customer. Helped me a lot in my choice. http://www.futuremark.com/hardware [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] PC simulator news site. Also....Join the largest DCS community on Facebook :pilotfly:
ENO Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I'm with the sli crowd on this. They're becoming more available for cheap now and lightly overclocked the 670 is probably the best card for the money. Depends on your budget measured against other possible upgrades... But sli'd 670s is a really good option. "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. blackbelter Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 For OP, the problem with 670 SLI is the limited Vram... since he wants to go for 4K display. I have no idea how much Vram that will require, but 2GB is probably not enough for higher settings. 2 X 670 2GB in SLI is effectively a much more powerful 2GB card, but it is still 2GB nevertheless. I would advise OP to look at cards that come with at least 4GB of vram. There are not too many choices to choose from.
cichlidfan Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I would advise OP to look at cards that come with at least 4GB of vram. There are not too many choices to choose from. Agreed. A 2GB card, or two (which still gives you only 2GB of VRAM), does not have a prayer of driving a 4K display with decent performance. I also would not buy an AMD card without waiting to see if EDGE provides an improvement in AMD performance. My queries reveal that there are not much models of Nvidia cards that has 4 GB. most of them consists of "only" 3. Must I sell my soul for the "Titan"...:dunno: Is it "ok" to conclude that Nvidia compensates the less Memory oppose to AMD's parallel products ?! (more efficient use of memory , faster , etc...) AMD's Solution's has a better "dry" specifications over Nvidia's... Memory , Band , Price of paralleled products.. (more ?!) Yet , AMD's Drivers seems to be problematic... Please shed some light. I'm really confused... Nir Bar "Schredder" "In the warrior code there's no surrender, though his body says stop, his spirit cries... NEVER !!!"
