The perfect war simulation (or damn close)

DCS World with Edge mixed with BMS Falcon dynamic campaign and F16 module along with Arma 3 ground combat.

It shall be called "The Art of War" and pwn all

I'll take DCS World, with EDGE and highly detailed maps, ED's own dynamic campaign/missions system in the future (I hope), and any modules they would like to make, Land, sea and air....

It should be called DCS World. and pwn all ;)

i think its crucial to have a "strong" ground component for maximum realism

all these aircraft? they don't exist on their own - they exist to support the ground forces

i'm not advocating for PFM/ASM level modeling - just a serious attempt (can we say FC3-level modeling?)

but a good ground force component *i think* is necessary

The way I see it, its called DCS Digital Combat Simulator NOT DCFS Digital Combat Flight Simulator so yes I would love to see Ground vehicles added into the sim. So far I think they have done good as with CA but it could be so much better with some TLC.

Very interesting to see various opinions on this subject.

In order that games survive some extra money should be attracted somehow. Of course they should not fall in the oposite side by selling I don't know, fishtanks maybe and after that fishes. I did not follow ARMA development road. I played Operation Flaspoint at that time and I was astonished about it. Now, I have ARMA3 but this one did not catch me too much, still, I am enjoying its graphics.

DCS is mainly an aircraft simulator, best FM ever and I don't think that will be catched up by any other in next 10 years. Its original engine was focused on aerial view, but I am quite sure the EDGE is not that focsued anymore. So I really do have hopes. CA opens that road, and the ruomors indicate some important changes are close to come.

What I would like! Well, DCS first of all, extremly detailed aircrafts as they are right now, extremly detailed war vehicles with apropiate FM too, a bit better human movements and more interactivity to be able to get down from a vehicle/airplane, walk to another one, get in as pilot or passenger and so on. Not very interested in detailed human body stances like prone/lean jump or so, but that could be nice addition. What about landing your heli, go by car to the next train station and travel back to your base at restaurant/chat wagon :D.

I have really big hopes from EDGE, which seems to come as a next generation simulator genre.

Having kids on servers is not necessary a bad think. They add a plus by their random and unexpected behaviours, like real life too. Why not organising elite(senior) squadrons and virtually eradicate what you consider abnormal. Step by step, such actions will make youngsters think twice before doing anything stupid. Also private servers are an option too...

So, my vote goes for "arma style" but with a bit lower expectations for that part.

I think they might go down the tank-sim road with small really high res EDGE maps. That's my guess.

I don't think they'll do infantry though. It'd be cool though:thumbup:

I voted no. The reason being that I think that this is not realistically viable in the near future.

You need an incredible amount of detail to be able to compete with something like ARMA.

Flight simulator maps need to be very large and have a very high view distances, which means that many elements need to be simplified so that we have a playable FPS.

There is no way we can have ARMA level detail on the ground at a flight sim scale. It'll probably be at least a decade before there are machines powerful enough.

So a neat idea, but not feasible.

op hit the nail on the head. after cashing in on the dayz craze, BIS just took a nosedive as a developer. arma 3 is a joke and it's pretty pathetic how much they rely on the modding community to practically build their game for them(without any sort of monetary compensation). i was also an ardent arma fan but 3 made me stop playing

i'd love to see enhanced vehicles (my dream is steel beast integration into DCS), but i don't see how infantry could fit in. the engine and game just aren't on the scope of infantry-level gameplay

i've been holding off buying combined arms until they actually flesh out the module, we'll see what happens. but in the end dcs is a flight sim, and that's most important

ahh another of the butthurt arma 3 haters.

What in particular is wrong with A3 despite the karts DLC (£1, most of which goes to charity)?

What features of A2 were cut?

As someone who has enjoyed arma since op flash, it seems some of the charm of (particularly A2) arma has been lost in the futuristic setting and vehicles.

However, MODS MODS MODS. Who uses vanilla arma?

There is not a hope in hell of making an infantry sim module in DCS without a 3rd party dev, even with the benefits of EDGE, the terrain is not developed with infantry in mind. Think enter-able buildings etc

Posted

I was going to wait and see what the Arma3 Heli DLC delivers but then I started watching some Youtube clips of some Arma guys scratching an itch in DCS doing F15 afterburner gun runs on lines of AA units and I thought that looks unreal.

So I ended buying DCS FC3, DCS CA and DCS KA-50 for $45.

Now for some strange reason instead of launching straight into funtimes in the sky I have been spending most of my time fiddling with the DCS module that I find the most disappointing and reading forums. CA is a very weird DLC. It doesn't really do anything particularly well yet. I have been in the mission editor trying to make Combined Arms do something cool.

It's the mission editor and the F10 map that are bringing me down. The gui is old.

Yknow what game has mission editor that looks like it was made this century ... Arma3. The Arma3 real-time mission editor looks amazing. Maybe the new weapons suck but when modders port all the Arma2 stuff across it's going to be a very fun air, sea, land combat sandbox. One year from now you can thank all the DayZ players for funding the engine refresh and for keeping all new maps.

The Dayz effect makes me think that maybe the best thing that could happen to DCS World right now would be for someone to make an Independence Day Mod where all the flight guys can scramble jets to fight an alien invasion.

Think about it. All the damage models will get shown off and all the missile modelling pays off, and there are a fifty planes engaging the boss ships and fifty planes going down in flames and the SAM sites are shooting up into the fight and there are flight controllers directing the battle and nobody really cares what the ground looks like because all the action is coming down from space and the ground is just full of smoking wrecks.

Even I want to play that game. ED sell a million copies of FC3 and thousands of copies of the harder DCS modules and then they start using that money to make a better air, sea, land simulator

... but then all the flight guys tell them that they just want to fight aliens again but this time in 1942.

So ED spend all the money they made by updating the DCS engine so that alien lasers scorch the lead based paint on a WW2 warbird in a physically accurate way.

The end.

It would be epic to be able to have real players on the ground supported by real players in tanks and real players in aircraft. That's my dream when it comes to gaming/simming.

Now.. Even if there was such a thing, it wouldn't work and I'll tell you why.

Time.

When you play realistically, things go at a realistic pace. You're going to be waiting for other people 90% of the time. The other 10% will be traveling around the map.

Honestly I think one little mission would take all day, and most of it wouldn't be exciting in the least. I'm sorry but I don't game it up all day. I have a couple hours at most and I need to pack in the fun! It's great to dream about this stuff and I do it all the time but I bet if we had it it wouldnt actually be all that great.

I mean.. Unless you dedicated your life to it... But then just go join the military.

As for ArmA, I understand what you're saying but I disagree with the things you accuse BI of

Could I just chime in here for one second. Can the people who are saying "I don't want those filthy little kids coming on here" please dispense with the patronising, stereotypical and poorly thought out views. I first picked up Lock on when I was 7, I was crap but I enjoyed it. Then I moved onto the FS series for a bit and enjoyed them because I was soon dissatisfied, but they were too damn easy, I wanted a bit of a challenge.

DCS Black Shark was my dream come true, a complex attack helicopter that might keep me interested for a bit, that Christmas I asked for two games, DCS BS and F4AF, both because they were advertised as "complex" and "as real as it gets". AF never worked properly but BS did so at the grand old age of 12 I started learning how to fly it properly, sure I skipped out on the cold start procedure for quite a long time and my flying was never perfect, I probably should have learnt more about the nav systems as well but hey, I learnt those things later. I then went online and flew on a few servers, nothing particularly hardcore but probably fairly average public servers, and you'll never guess what, I didn't go around team killing and typing "HA HA YOU NOOBZ ARE SHIIT" in chat, I didn't have rage attacks, I just played the game and I doubt anyone would have thought that I'm not an adult.

Bringing me on to my main point. Age =/= maturity and intelligence, as proven on this very forum, there are plenty of whiners who are not kids. It would be unacceptable for me to stereotype black people, or Asians, or women on this forum and rightly so. Yet bashing anyone who is under the age of 18, go for it guys! So before you make your judgements, educate yourself. It's pathetic.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Yeah, I consider Arma 2 to be the last Arma. Now its COD with the kitchen sink thrown in. Its more of a ridiculous Gary's Mod now. I think they're just trying to milk money out of a dead game before they completely ditch it.

The poll's pretty interesting so far. Almost evenly split between all three categories. Lol, I knew the die hards would jump on first and vote for planes only. Can't blame them for that. But I think most people (mostly the newer people ) can agree that its time to move on and include at LEAST realistic vehicles. Hope to see that M1A2 SEP module come out one day. If not from Eagle, then a third party. Surely there must be some third parties that are interested in realistic vehicles. And there was someone talking about the "arma" type vehicles. No, just to make things clear, I'm talking about REALISTIC vehicles. i.e. DCS level modules. Like Steel Beasts level ( or better ). One thing ED should think about is all the more modules they would sell by bringing in inf / vehicles. There are far more die hard FPS players out there than there are flight fanatics. Arma 3, as bad as it is, still sold over 1 million copies. Of course, people were expecting a lot more from it. I think DCS could deliver what they are really wanting. DCS really is the best flight sim I have ever played. I'm sure they could do the same with the rest of their "world". And of course, if you put out decent modding tools, a lot terrain / building makers would be happy to populate that world with all kinds of towns, bases, castles, forests, etc. You guys really could be the next Arma, in a LOT better way.

I could not agree with you more!

Hello, sounds awesome, i posted this on another thread but i was thinking it would be cool to have a sniper simulator- Going behind enemy lines to scout their positions and radio in their positions to command. Avoiding enemies spotting you, laser "painting" targets for air to ground strikes. And also integrating a sniper simulator. Havin a spotter and adjusting for wind speed, direction, altitude, weapon type, ammunition type, range, breath and heartbeat timing (for pulling the trigger), and adjusting for moving targets like cars using all those things, and incorporate advanced hiding techniques, and firing techniques to avoid enemies spotting muzzle flash and spotting you while you sneak up on them

heh yeah for years now i've wanted to see a full digital simulator world - not just combat vehicles - a massive amalgamation of DCS and all its planes, territory control and logistics similar to Planetside 1, trains from Train Simulator, ground vehicles and deformable terrain from Spintyres, trucks from Euro Truck Simulator, commercial flights and ATC, infantry combat from Arma...

a massive simulation spanning the globe, with multiple teams occupying, defending, and attacking territory... controlling resources, organising logistics, creating and breaking alliances...

maybe it'll exist in twenty years? ;-)
