rami80 Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I am writing these questions as someone who is interested in the warthog but has read about the issues it has, so the answers can help me and others interested in buying it. Do the new devices still brick and need a PCB change, or is that the old batch? Is there anyway of avoiding bricking? Is greasing necessary if one does not fly helicopters? Is it a risky process? Is getting an extension that helpful? What things does it make easier? Thank you
Pilotasso Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Life is a risk. :) Just upgrade the firmware when you get it. Mine is still working after 3 years. .
Art-J Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Relevant threads here and at SimHQ suggest that bricking doesn't happen nowadays as often as it used to with the first production batches. Just to be on more the safe side though, it's recommended to plug the throttle in when the PC is already running and unplug it before PC shutdown. Mediocre quality (or rather quantity) grease is still there (I've got a relatively new set, bought this spring) and it affects movement precision somewhat, but not as bad as I worried it would. Therefore, although I've been working on my own homemade extension for some time, I'm not in hurry, because smooth taking off, landing and gunnery in P-51 is certainly doable with unmodified stick (input settings curvature helps a lot). I'm thinking about re-greasing it though, just for the better feel and accuracy. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
skouras Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) hi buddy! i use my tm warthog 3-4 years now and the problems that i encounter it was that the devices it doesn't work on usb 3.0 once i try to update firmware!! the solution was to update them to my laptop on usb 2.0 ports and then i just plug them to usb 3.0 again and everything works great! second problem was that the stick after some time may start to produce a slack on the center on both axes as you can see here i even replace the whole part inside the base plastic ring,o'ring, white ring along with the screws, big spring but the problem still persists. now mind you that is only my personall experience with TM. Others may not encounter any problems at all!! the tm warthog is one of a hell HOTAS so if are on fire to buy it or not i say go ahead and buy it!! ps. (i have plug them on usb3.0 since first day and never unplug them) Edited September 3, 2014 by skouras [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]W10(64bit)Asus Rog Strix Z370-F - i7 8700K - Dark Rock Pro 4 - 16 giga ram Corsair vengeance 3000 - MSI RTX 2070 Super - Asus Rog Phobeus soundcard - Z906 Surround speaker - Track ir5 - HOTAS Warthog
Ktulu2 Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I must say, i too have a litle slack (200or400 values in 60 000, no biggy) but thats all the bad, I just hope that won't go wost, but even if it does, its totally worth it. In the end, its goes down to «Is spending 500/600 on a controller worth it» if it is, go on, TM is the best. Also, do NOT consider buying only the stick, for me the throttle is even more important than the stick. I do DCS videos on youtube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAs8VxtXRJHZLnKS4mKunnQ?view_as=public
dburne Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I think the main part of the bricking problem came from some earlier firmware. Got my Warthog over 2 years ago and it is doing well. It has started to development a little slop around center, not real bad though. I actually just put a small amount of deadzone in the middle to account for it just in case, so I always get a 0 value reading when the stick returns to center from any direction. I keep both my throttle and stick always plugged into a powered USB2 Hub, never had an issue with it. At some point, I really would like to give it a good greasing up per the thread here, and maybe replace the O-Ring with the Teflon one that someone is selling here. Just have not made the time, or more importantly worked up the nerve, to delve into it. My eyes and hands are not what they used to be and I fear of pinching or breaking wires. rami80 Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 Thank you guys for the help:D , however when seeing the video skouras posted I was really shocked. For the price, having plastic parts which require sanding is very off-putting, and what is the issue with the o-ring?

I'd still be interested in seeing why yours wear out too! How about this... send me a PM with your name and shipping address. I will send you one for free. Let's see if we can find what's causing the wear.
