It doesn't come with a free P-51D ... it has a free T-51; which is not the same plane. The T-51 is a Mustang replica kit airplane.

Why should you buy? Because no other flight sim comes close or can hold a candle to a high fidelity DCS standard simulated airplane.

"A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft."

Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

Pardon my ignorance, but I've been out of the flight sim hobby for about 8 years... Getting back in... I loved flanker...

So, it appears only the A-10 has a disk version and all others are download. Are they all straight download or steam or both? I think I'd prefer to NOT use STEAM but I 'm not sure... Any thoughts?

They can be used both ways.

I also prefer not to use steam for DCS ( personal preference )

DCSWorld can be downloaded for free from here

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/world/

and modules purchased from here

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/

Once you have the free DCSWorld modules can be downloaded ingame via the module manager

The disc version of the A-10C is hopelessly out of date. I couldn't even find the necessary unpdate files online to bring it back to the current standards, so I ended up just downloading the latest from the DCS website.

You'll find almost all games, even those you buy immediately after they're released will have an online update right away, so before too long, CD format purchases will be a thing of the past.

DCS is available both on steam, and directly from DCS, and my advice would be to buy direct here. The downside is that updates are not done in the background as I understand steam does, but you get the latest modules a few weeks sooner, and perhaps more importantly, there is no percentage of the purchase costs going anywhere but to the developers. That way, we're far more likely to see DCS able to thrive, and continue to release more goodies. Plus of course you have less system resources working in the background providing the steam interface.

Welcome back to the world of flight sims, you'll find the world has become far more real, far more absorbing - all due to the hard work put in by the developers at DCS, who have definitely raised the bar.

What do I get when I buy the non STEAM version? Am I buying a "key" so that I can download anytime and multiple times (if I reformat or something)?

DCS uses starforce and you get 9 activations, but replenished once all are used once a month.

StarForce version introduced in DCS automatically replenishes one and only one activation in a month after all are spent. Eg. all activations are spent, a month passes and serial number gets one activation. When you spend it, the counter starts over again.

Before doing hardware changes or reformatting you can deactivate your modules so you do not loose a activation.

Yes, you receive a key for each module and they are stored on the ED store. You can download any module as many times as you want.

Teapot its not a t-51 or a kit. Its a tf-51 2 seat unarmed mustang ;)

Ah .. thanks for the correction Random! Quite honestly I've been ignoring it in favour of what I consider to be the real masterpieces (P-51 and 190D), however now I'll definitely give it a go.

It's really something that DCS provide this for free ... although great advertising for the additional modules . Cheers mate!

i would recommend to use the non-steam version....

you can still add the game then as a non steam game to steam and launch it through steam.steam friends will then see that you are playing dcs world....

the non steam version has a couple of advantages like the possibilty to switch back to a previous version for example.also patches i think are sometimes lagging behind with the steam verison...

The DCS World simulator is completely free and supports campaigns, single missions, mission editing and multiplayer however doesn’t actually contain any content.

If you want content you will need modules.

Two modules are free and the other modules cost money from $5-ish to $50-ish.

One module usually contains only one highly detailed aircraft with a highest quality flight model and a completely clickable cockpit complete with digital documentation, a campaign and several stand-alone and training missions.

When you have bought a module you are given a key code that you can write down or access on the DCS website and use to download the game as many times as you want and you don’t need Steam.

The clickable cockpit and highest quality flight model modules are the A-10C Warthog, Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst, F-86F Sabre, Fw 190 D-9 Dora, Ka-50 Black Shark, Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight, MiG-21bis Fishbed, TF-51D Mustang, P-51D Mustang and finally the UH-1H Huey.

Some of the newer models have varying degrees of documentations and included missions.

Then there’s Flaming Cliffs 3 which contains the A-10A, F-15C, MiG-29A, MiG-29G, MiG-29S, Su-25, Su-27 and Su-33 all together in one very cheap compilation. However the FC3 aircraft have mixed quality flight models and I believe only the F-15C and soon the Su-27 have the highest quality flight model and NO cockpits are interactive. The MiG aircraft have very low quality cockpits that are not fully 3D, you can't move around in them with 3DOF (3-degrees-of-freedom).

The Su-25T used to be a part of FC3 but is free with DCS World and as such it does not have an interactive cockpit and I believe the flight model is medium quality. As such I believe it is a bad demo aircraft because the interactive cockpits is the cool thing about DCS.

Flaming Cliffs 3, 2 and 1 are what Eagle Dynamics worked on before DCS basically and they have been brought into DCS and updated instead of being discarded and that’s why they exist even though all other DCS aircraft are full quality.

The other free aircraft is the TF-51D which is full quality however is basically a P-51D without weapons so not much action.

Currently DCS World 2.0, 1944, three or so new maps (currently there’s only one available) and half a dozen new aircraft are currently in development and expected within 2014-2015.

I and everyone else would recommend starting with the A-10C. Easy to understand and flies easily but very deeply detailed. It, the Ka-50 helicopter, the P-51D and FC3 are the cheapest modules.

Oh and finally there’s the Combined Arms module which lets you control ground units a bit like a strategy game.

Edit: oh and FC3 contains the MiG-29G also... I'm not sure why this is such a big secret and it's not mentioned on the website or in the documentation but it's in the editor.

Also note that the A-10A, F-15C, Su-25 and soon the Su-27 can be bought separately from FC3 but they are identical to the FC3 versions... only the manuals are different I suppose.

The FC3 manual covers all FC3 aircraft except for the G and it doesn't have as much detail as the individual manuals.

Just one final note, If you do buy through steam you can use your steam key with the non-steam version as well. The oposite used to be true but it is not anymore. So if you buy outside of steam you have cannot decide you want to activate those keys on steam. Said like that it may apear that it's a better idea to buy on steam even if you want to install the non-steam version in the end. So as to allow you to change your mind latter. But the thing is, the sales that they sometimes have on steam for DCS products, are not nearly as good as the sales on ED's online store. So you have to weight that.

Don't think that's quite true.

FC3 has the SU-25A (without Shkval+Vikhrs).

World comes with the SU-25T (with Shkval+Vikhrs).

Both are now AFM aircraft (Su-25T was always AFM, the -A has been upgraded).

Correct that they both sadly don't have clickable cockpits.

I assume the huey is the best heli if oneis looking for a challenge and a helicopter that flies the most like a real chopper that requires lots of pedal action to keep it straight???

I'm much more into the pure flying fun than attacking things, etc...

Well, I'm bummed. The sale said "4th to 14th". I ready that as midnight tonight (the 14th) was when I had to purchase. I started putting things in my cart at 9:30 pm CT, and see that I'm getting no discounts so the sale must be off. When will the next 50% off sale be?

From what I've heard from the community holidays seem to be common.

Also look out for steam sales as they seem to be on different schedules.

I'd say the flagship would be the a10c warthog.

It is quite a learner craft and the "create fast mission" works well with it and JTAC.

The upcoming Mig21-bis from Leatherneck seems beautifully modeled.

Russian style korean war kind of plane.

Mainly a swept wing interceptor with horrible characterisics except speed.

Still with ground radar (that you can only use for 15 min until the cooling alcohol is all spent and you fry it).

It has some ground aspects to it.

And *tons* of clickable buttons (Moar Buttons! ;) )

The su-25t is actually a pretty useful and fun craft with some abilities that I believe the a10c lacks.

(SEAD missiles?)

No joy with clickable cockpit.

But a fun bird and 6dof to move your head in 3d space.

I'd look out for halloween or christmas.

Have fun!
