Griffon26 Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Hey ppl, in 2011 I bought my first DCS product by chance in a normal shop for electronis. I saw that little warthog facing me behind some other games and I put it out of the shelf... So with that moment a big friendship started to grow :joystick: :D If there wasnt that boxed version of the A10c I think I never got to the great flight sim DCS Now im asking me, will there be other products from DCS get a boxed version or is it to expensive? The P51D, the huey and the black shark 1 for example already got one. Well maybe someone wanna reveal his opinion? Regards Griffon26 And btw I prefer to have something in my shelf than in an digital list. :music_whistling: P.s Excuse the english pls [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Never parachute into an area you've just bombed You never have too much fuel, unless you burn.
SkateZilla Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 I wouldnt think so, DCSWorld updates are at a frequency that by time a publisher presses the disc image, prints the manuals, prints the boxes and ships, it will be out dated. Cuasing version mismatch conflicts when Installing etc etc. Not even considering publishing costs. LockOn, FlamingCliffs2, LockOn Platinum, Ka50 and A-10C 1.1.x.x (PreDCSW) were likely the last of the Retail Boxed Discs, I Might have seen P-51 box, but I dont remember where. cichlidfan Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Boxes are largely pointless given the way the software market is moving. I certainly have no desire to have the cost of the boxed version incorporated into my download price. @Skates http://www.amazon.com/DCS-P-51-Mustang-PC/dp/B00BPDDXK0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420130803&sr=8-1&keywords=dcs+p-51 ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! Yurgon Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Personally, I've developed an aversion to DVDs and the like. They take up valuable space, it takes time to find them in the shelf, swapping DVDs is a constant pain (especially when I'm in the process of watching one of the TV shows I have on DVD or Blu-ray), and the last game I bought on DVD required the medium to be in the drive whenever the game was launched even though that edition was labeled "DRM-free" (you sure didn't renew our friendship, Piranha Bytes!). In comparison, downloads via Torrent are very quick and the module manager makes it very easy to download, install and activate modules. I also can't recall any troubles whatsoever with DCS downloads and installations. From buy-decision to take-off, it can be a one hour process (including some manual reading). Try to beat that with a DVD. :D All things considered, I'm quite happy with all the modules being available for download and I don't miss boxed copies one bit. But if ED was able to broaden the customer base by offering both purchase methods in parallel, I'm all for it.

7rooper Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Or they could offer DVD Box like sized cards with a download code and instructions for the price of the full game. Just like a Play Store or Xbox Live card works and this way they can put their awesome modules in stores like the one where Griffon found its A-10C DVD box for first time. With these method ED can even include a printed manual and get to many more casual customers My rig specs: Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR
Griffon26 Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 At first many thanks for your answers and the opinions we got together! Of course installing a game/sim/whatever via CD/DVD gets more and more outdated but the possibility to puplish a downloadcode only version like 7rooper mentioned would have the same effect like a normal Disk inside. I said it before, without the boxed version of the A10C I doubtless never heard something of DCS. Ok SkateZilla mentioned that the update frequency is too short so that a CD would be outdated and the costs would be too much. Thats true my Disc was outdated too and I needed to patch it to the newest version. And it came with a colored quickstart guide. But this quickstart guide was a great help to make the first simple steps with the A10 (Ok I found fires tutorials on youtube so it was a "just in the case I forgot something notebook") but all in one it helped alot. cichlidfan: Wow that p51d is really that expensive in the US? http://www.amazon.de/DCS-P-51D-Mustang-PC/dp/B008XIDAQ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420138885&sr=8-1&keywords=dcs+p51 Yurgon: I download via Steam so I cant say anything about troubles with the DCS Download tools. Yea DVDs take space and the producing isnt environmentally friendly I think but not everyone has a good internet connection and so they prefer DVDs/CDs like a friend of me hes a poor guy 200kb/s is a high average... But after all you understand what I try to tell you. It could be good to "display" for the great Digital Combat Simulator. Also I heard something about a TV Commercial in the USA and Russia but thats something different  Pls excuse english mistakes google helped me a bit :music_whistling: Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Never parachute into an area you've just bombed You never have too much fuel, unless you burn.

Yup, slow and/or expansive Internet connections are definitely a problem with "download only" software. Then again, DCS World and all modules are freely available for download, so one could always ask a friend or neighbor or colleague to download and burn it on DVD. Then you'd only need an Internet connection to purchase the keys. Pls excuse english mistakes google helped me a bit :music_whistling: No need to apologize IMO. How are you supposed to learn a foreign language if you don't actively use it? No one expects non-native speakers to speak a perfectly polished English before posting here. Besides, it's my impression that users who, according to their profile, live in the US or the UK often struggle with the English language in similar ways as we non-native speakers do (though "living in the US/UK" doesn't automatically mean "native English speaker", obviously). :D BTW, this site is a huge help: http://dict.leo.org/ On average, I use it several times while writing a post here in order to make sure I get the spelling right or find the correct translation for the word I'm looking for.
Griffon26 Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Yea the option to burn it on DVD by a friend is a nice idea! How are you supposed to learn a foreign language if you don't actively use it? No one expects non-native speakers to speak a perfectly polished English before posting here. Yea youre right I try to use english as often as possible. And thanks for the link you posted here I´ll try it out. Yurgon Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Yea youre right I try to use english as often as possible. I think speaking a foreign language is like flying aircraft: the more you do it, the better you get.
