_Acoustic_ Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Does EDGE stand a chance to incorporate DX12 when it releases or is it strictly DX11? If DX12 is released like they say (holidays 2015) I wonder what flight sim will take advantage of what it brings to the table.

It would also make not much sense to switch targets in mid flight ... well, on the last 50 meters on the landing approach - that would be a guarantee for another 1-2 years delay I would imagine. So, no, no DX12 for DCS2 - maybe with DCS3. That is my prediction.
_Acoustic_ Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 Thanks for the info. I just didn't know if the engine could incorporate DX12 in the future.
chaos Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Apparently it is "easy" to port from DX11 to DX12. I'm not saying ED should start porting it now... let's get EDGE out the door first. However, it is encouraging to know that it could be done at some point. "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage..."
HiJack Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 You need to be running Windows 10 to use DX12 so at least not for another year.
SkateZilla Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 You need to be running Windows 10 to use DX12 so at least not for another year. Just pointing out, Win X is a free upgrade (with in the first year) for Win7,8,8.1, which is required for DX11. Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
emg Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Let's wait and see if DX12 brings signficant real world improvements, or if it's another DX10.
Worrazen Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) Let's wait and see if DX12 brings signficant real world improvements, or if it's another DX10. While I'm actually quite subjectively in favor of ED to get on DX12 faster, and I'd have DX11 and DX12 concurrently for all those who don't want to get on the latest OS. It's not going to affect the patch process, it may add something to testing as both version would have to be tested for graphical errors separately tho. That said, thinking about it, while DX12 is revolutionary (but thanks to Mantle, remember!), it actually may not necessairly mean that much for DCS in terms of CPU already being used for all kind of stuff, as I heard physicy and sound already are separated into other threads, now draw calls obviously go sky high when you have a big map and trees and all the objects, I'm not sure how much would it increase max performance, but it would definitely get rid of a lot of FPS drops I think. Now, Vulcan, works down to Win7. So, yeah, it's kinda tricky, you never know, maybe they'll throw some coins and just skip DX12 and go to Vulcan and have Win7, Win8 and Win10 and Linux ...etc supported out of the box. Plus you guys don't count something into the mix, the DX11 support may have been started a long time ago and kind of kept delying, who knows maybe they already planned for DX11 being redundancy for people who can't afford to jump on DX12/Vulcan that fast.
