Well, I figure it would still be cool to have something like this, but when I have more time and money. Frankly, right now it would be better to take the $400 or more I would spend on getting this up and running and put it into my actual flight lessons. I'd rather have the money go to real flying now and consider simulators later.

Do whatever makes you happy, as long as you’re not hurting others, it’s all good.

I have a cheap Chinese “pilot’s helmet” which I rarely wear while doing DCS...but when I do it brings a smile to my face to be able to flip the visors up and down while barrel-rolling and/or strafing the infidels on the ground..!

Yes, you can velcro TrIR led’s to the helmet, but you should also adjust the settings of its location to keep it fairly accurate. Audio can be done with a Bluetooth phone headset and a Bluetooth “dongle” on your computer.

$300+ can be used for a lot of things, but only you can measure cost/benefits to your needs+wants.

real helmet for flightsim

I was lucky to score an old HGU-55 (german airforce F-4) to put on my shelf, and i tried it once for the immersion - fail! Its heavy, cramped, the sound is bad unless you spend a fortune and rework the whole thingymagogs. I love wearing my bonebag (aka aviator onesie) and my gloves - but stay away with that clunky brainshell from me! But yes - I had to try it...

Greetings

So often the cry is for more immersion. One might spend $400 to $800 on a VR headset system and another $600 to $1,200 on a gpu for immersion. Nothing can be more immersive than wearing a flight suit, boots, gloves, and helmet (preferably with oxygen mask), and g-suit.

I don't have any of that, but I did build a sport-scale replica of the F-4E Martin-Baker ejection seat that uses the real survival pack/seat cushion and lumber support cushion. It is not particularly comfortable, but it is almost exactly like sitting in the real thing. I like it far more than sitting in any office chair or simulator race car bucket seat.

If I see the right helmet for the right price, I will certainly get it for display. If it is the correct size for me, I might try adapting it to mount a VR headset.

An old Vietnam era F-4 pilot recently died and his family put his whole flying kit on eBay as separate items: helmet, O2 mask, boots, flight suit. I can't believe the family didn't keep that stuff or donate it to an aviation museum. It was priced to move. Everything looked very close to my size, even the boots. I would rather spend my money on other things right now, so I passed despite the very low initial bid prices. The stuff was gone in days. But if I had seen that opportunity at the right time, I might be sitting here right now with a flight suit, boots, and helmet hanging next to my home made F-4 seat and throttle console waiting for a long flight session that would merit suiting up for immersion.

If you've worn any of it you'll know: wearing real flight gear is not going to immerse you, it's just going to make you a disgusting, sweaty mess.

It’s all part of the experience...my simpit is a climb-over-the-left-control-panel-one-foot-on-the-seat-other-foot-to-the-floor-straddle-center-stick-and-drop-into-ACES-II....and don’t forget the 5-point harness!

Worth each and every discomfort! I get up and yes I’m a bit sweaty but daaayyuuuum I feel like I just flew a mission!

VR and helmets work perfectly... Well, as long as it is a Pimax and a SPH-4 series bonedome.

New level of immersion

And no adaption is needed when using this awesome adapter which connects your helmet to the USB port.

Cheers
