More cool stuff at Guba Lopatkina :)

Still searching the decomissioned Alfas. Have some canditates, but they are relay hard to positively ID.

If you look to the left of the small runway, you can see the giant nuke detection radar complex, way more impressive than that small antenna (Size does matter here:p)

Well duh, thank you for pointing that out Sherlock... Where do you think "SwingKid's intended route" was trying to go, to the North Pole? :)

Didn't I read somewhere that the Google Earth imagery is about 2-3 years old?

Can anyone confirm this?

Don't know about the rest of the world but I can confirm that the Belfast pictures are from between 9-11 January 2002.

There are different photosets are being used. The 15 m imagery is LandSat 7 (1999), but some of the high-res stuff is apparently as recent as 8 months. I can confirm that some of the Ukraine hi-res is no more than 3 years old, from the presence of the tiny new passenger terminal and paved road leading to the east end of Belbek airbase that was built in 2003.

Very cool indeed! :) .

However, I am pretty sure that the subs in your second pic aren't Victor IIIs ;) . Apart from the shape looking more like that of the Oscar class, their size also mach this much better.

I tried zooming in on one of the Typhoons, took a screenshot - then scrolled across the map(without changing zoom level) , took a screenie of one of(what I believe to be), the Oscar class vessels and then cut and pasted it into the first Typhoon shot....as you can see from the attached image it is almost the same size as this.

Yes indeed :)

JJ - with you on the Udaloy's, but how on earth you could recognise the Sovremenny from that dark blurred pic - I gotta get new glasses / PC monitor....

Yes you are right, I didn't check the size. I was guessing on the Victor because of Albacore shape of the hull ( the Akulas and Sierras have cylindrical hulls ). Didn't know that the Oscars have a simmilar shape when viewed from above.

But isn't there a towed array teardrop on the stern or am I seeing things ?

thanks SK, you're my source of reputation ;) :D

Maybe later I'll upload my googleearth bookmarks, so you can all enjoy most of the former "Central Front" bases.

Hehe....well I couldn't at first either, but with the Udaloys identified it is just a question of going through 3 steps:

a). compare sizes - i.e. what could they be. The Sovremenny class is roughly the length of the Udaloy, but narrower - both of which fit with the photo.

b). having concluded that the overall meassurements fit, I took the opposite approach and started looking for things that don't - i.e. for a positively identifiable feature that would counter my first thought. But there were none :) . If you look very closely you can see 2 things which would identify the ships as Sovremenny class:

- a shiny ball-like item at bow and stern(like the AK-100 mounts on the Udaloy) which would be the AK-130 mounts on the Sovremenny.

- a blurry white spot almost at the middle of the ship(a little aft), that would fit with the midship helicopter pad configuration which is very characteristic for the Soveremenny.

c). use the method of exclusion - i.e what else could they be. The Udaloy class is a very large ship and there are only a few other ships of similar or larger size. As mentioned to begin with, the Sovremenny is roughly the same length but more narrow...which fits.

The only other alternative in terms of size is the Slava class, but it is just a wide as the Udaloy, some 20 m longer and has a distinctive aft helo pad - not to mention that there are 3 similar ships at the port, while only a single Slava class vessel is in service with the Northern Fleet :) .

I was actually more confused about the one that must be a Kirov class - I have a hard time finding any characteristics that would identify it as such(except perhaps for the aft section), but the sheer size of that thing tells me that it cannot be anything else :) .

Edit: using the meassurement tool in GoogleEarth I get ~250 m in length and width of ~ 29 m - it is definately a Kirov! :)

Cheers,

- JJ.

I still think that road in western Ukraine is a brilliant find on my part, never knew such things exhisted in urban areas. I always thought such runways were somewhere in a forrest.

....and a bunch of well-stowed migs @ krasnodar center

plus some lonely frogfoots and some aircraft remains, same airfield

:) those migs look like cars at the car-park near the mall on Saturday afternoons!

More seriously, comparing RL airbases with those in LockOn, it looks like they were a bit overmodelled, I mean, there are far fewer shelters and things like that in RL. Some bases just appear as airstrips from the satellite...

My ideal online situation, flying over Krasnodar or somewhere with all the fighters lined up like that, and me coming in hot in my hog, finger over the pickle button, Mk20s ready to fly. Ready to get my own back on the pesky fighters not letting me do my job....:P

YES!...

Thank you very much for the heads-up Starlight! :)

Alfa, check this one ;)

Yup that's a "Delta IV class" SSBN!

You know where and what to look for ;)

Oh my god this is so cool!. Did you notice that they also updated the coverage of the Severomorsk naval port with new high-res images - check these...

Velikiy_Ustinov.jpg

# 099 "Pyotr Velikiy"(Kirov class) and # 055 "Marshal Ustinov"(Slava class)

Sovremenny_Udaloy.jpg

2x Sovremenny class and 2x Udaloy class

The above two images confirm my earlier finds earlier in this thread: http://www.forum.lockon.ru/showpost.php?p=190763&postcount=38 in regards to these ships.

Naval aviation:

Severomorsk_3.jpg

Severomorsk-3 airfield with parked Su-33s - I had already put a place-mark by it, but only now is it covered by high-res imagery.

And finally......tada(drums & whistles)...

Kuznetsov.jpg

"Admiral Flota Kuznetsov" at Murmansk!

Cheers,
