Hammerfall 3 i did on the first attempt this time around. Once you figure it out, it's not that bad. But learning seems to involve Strelas to the face a few times. Just finished the training mission with the F16's, and so far i'm really enjoying it. Don't know what the protocol for spoilers are, but i finished it with a very nice gun run, if i say so myself (which, to me, means i sprayed 2-3-400 rounds at the target and by sheer luck managed to hit it)

Tacview even tells me i hit one of the T55s with the one M156 WP i fired.

And something weird happened to one of the F16s as he was circling for a bit just off the coast near the airbase and then ejected.

Hehe, congratulations :) glad you like the campaign. For the F16 its the AI, sometimes AI flights do stupid things...

I have started this campaign recently and am really enjoying the way things happen and how missions change, and also the mountains scenery is pretty cool. Thank you Baltic Dragon for your dedication, good work. :)

OTOH, I am having a couple of issues:

* In mission 5 - Operation Hammerfall 2, the L-39 recon aircraft gets downed pretty soon by a MANPAD (I think their ceiling and range was increased recently), but I guess it should play some role during the mission. Am I right? Is this a bug?

* In mission 6 - Operation Hammerfall 3, the cloud ceiling is at 8,000-8,500 ft, but looking for some tips about this mission saw Ralfi's video where it seemed to be at 12,000 ft or higher. Was this a later intended change?

Thank's a lot!

Hey! Glad you like it!

In mission 5 it never got shot down during testing, but some things are difficult to script. Good point, perhaps I should make it invisible for the enemy, but then it would not be realistic. L-39 does not have a very important role to play, though, so no worries.

In mission 6 - yes, Ralfi's video is from the previous version of the campaign (with voice-to-speech voiceovers). I made it more difficult on purpose to liking of some and dislike of others :)

Enjoy!

Good to know :)

Yesterday I tried it for the second time (the first one ended with a CFIT in a bad turn after losing SA). This mission has encouraged me to use lots of markpoints that previously I barely used.

This is my debriefing on Hammerfall 3:

First run in, I mark one of the AAA and while looking for the SA-9, I get couple of SAMs incoming. While evading, I order my flight to engage AA threats. First wingman goes in, gets hit by a SAM, ejects ordenance and is RTB. Second wingman launches a Mav onto the MANPADS, killing both and then gets shot down.

I then locate the SA-9, but after a couple of runs not achieving a Maverick lock, a near CFIT egressing up through the clouds (good to have a radioaltimeter!) and a few 23mm holes in my right wing, I decide to mark it more accurately and just try a JDAM from above the clouds. Incoming from the SE, there is room for it to drop and the wind also helps, spot on (so says JTAC!)

At this point I realize that I have probably not enough ordenance to destroy everything in there and that I will need to rearm back at base.

Now JTAC tells me to destroy the bunkers (what about the AAA, man!?!?!). OK, a cople of JDAMs from 8,000 ft do the job. I see the option to send in the ground armor and not really knowing what I was doing with so much stress and a bit claustrophobic, I use the option.

Oh, well, I will kill the AAA and try the CBU on the complex while they approach. So after destroying the first ZU with a Maverick, markpointing the second one and nearly CFIT again egressing up into the clouds, I run in with my last missile... and the second AAA is already destroyed. Georgian troops are there killing the bad guys. I see that they leave a truck behind and while I am getting ready to go in... Mission success! They had come back and killed it. And no need to rearm. :)

Very enjoyable mission, in the end it is easier than it seems. But at some point I will come back and fly it again, as I want to destroy more stuff in there haha!

I am currently re-flying this campaign (if this is not an endorsement then I don't know what is :)) to see if I can do things differently. I came up with this new way to accomplish Hammerfall 3.

It turns out that TGP in IR mode (WHOT or BHOT) can see through a thin layer of clouds but insurgents and Strela cannot. So, if you fly in the clouds, just slightly above the cloud base, you can survey the area, mark the targets and later climb up above the clouds and destroy everything with JDAMs. Throw in CBU-87 on WP 5 for soft targets. All without single shot fired at you! And you still have 2 MAVs left for backup.

Of course, the catch is that you have to be comfortable flying on instruments in the clouds and don't hit the mountains :). Watch your radar altimeter and TAD very closely! Climb up quickly after you fly over the target. Still, I did crash first couple of times...

A slight variation of it is to just always fly above the clouds. TGP can still see through the clouds sometimes, but only zoomed in and only straight down. It makes finding targets pretty hard, but possible.

Now, I don't know how much of this is realistic and how much is just "gaming the game" but it seems that the TGP's ability to see through clouds is implemented intentionally (for example, it degrades with increasing cloud thickness) rather than as a an oversight.

Yes, the IR sensor should work pretty much like that, seems realistic.

The unrealistic part is flying in clouds with the mountains that close, no pilot would do that. ;) But in the real world that attack would have been cancelled due to bad weather or just dropped bombs on coordinates, and it is a pretty cool mission in the sim, so we better have the fun. :)

BTW, I tried the next mission (7) and could not contact the Mi-24. Tuned the freq but didn't get any audio nor there was any option in F10. Am I missing anything here?

I had similar experience. Sometimes Mi-24 would talk and sometimes not. I don't know why. But even when it did, it didn't seem essential to the mission.

Anyone have some advice on how to take out the luxury yach? That badass frigate escorting it always gets me before I get a lock on my maverick. I tried approaching at below 100ft altitude then most of the SAMs miss me, but I still dont get a lock on it before I get shot down eventually

No, Mi24 is not essential, it is there to help - provided it talks, which is governed by AI mechanics, so works randomly :)

My only advice is - find it quick :) it is not that difficult in the IR mode and coordinates given by Overlord are rather spot on. I also had my wingman successfuly engage the target. Shoot & depart @ full throttle.

I've been on the Hammerfell mission (where I am sent to attack the insurgents who are inside the buildings surrounding the mosque).

I fly there take out the inf outside, the wait for the friendly BMP to approach. Problem is when he gets close, the insurgents all run out and then destroy it before I can have time to react.

I loiter for several minutes but always miss my chance to attack them when the BMPs get close. All other air assets are unreachable.

What else should I be doing??

IIRC you can also drop a bomb on the buildings (mk82) to have the infantry out and then destroy it before calling ground forces in. PM me if you still have trouble, I will check that.

@ EntropySG - thanks, man :) I am about to test first mission of the new campaign I am working on now..

Hi thanks for the reply!

The problem I see is that ground forces move in on the stronghold before I can even call it in. I make my first pass, kill the insurgents then loiter, friendly ground forces move in and get destroyed before I can react.

So you think a full on bombing running destroying everything would help ? I did not try that since it wasn't part of the ROE.

Hmm, I will have to check it, I haven't looked at the Enemy Within campaign for quite some time now, being involved in other projects. But... are you talking about the first Group that moves in from the east (I think it is east, 3 APCs)? When your wingman calls that it is a trap?

If so, then it is intentional and there is nothing you can do. In fact you are asked to just loiter and watch how things are going and not engage, as there are MANPADs on the ground. The second Group will move from another direction and only when you call it in

I did Hammerfall 1 a couple of weeks ago and it was fine.

Before the second convoy gets there, Overlord tells you to drop the Mk.82's on the buildings so the insurgents come out. Actually I never did that because at the same time, they sent me chasing something else, but it was not problem anyway.

BTW, that CAP-9 in Odessa mission is a bug? I have seen them in some other mission too. It is a training captive Sidewinder, no use for them in combat, and with those pesky Fulcrums around it would be nice to have a live one or two.

PS: Yes, they shot me down after evading 5 missiles. ;)

Yes, it is a bug or rather - my mistake :) the missiles should be live.

Hi baltic_dragon,

In my opinion DCS World needs more content like this. Thank you and to all associates for hard work!

As I really understand it is essential to convince your wife that your time investment in DCS is worthwhile and profitable, I wanted to contribute on this task with small amount of money.

Unfortunately after clicking on PayPal link on campaign download page I've got message 'This transaction has expired...'. Please let me know where to pay. Thanks!

Thanks marluk, that is very kind of you, appreciate it

I think the link should be working again, let me know by PM if that is not the case.

AND FINALLY...

I know that ED offers an option to sell the campaign as full-standing products. I chose to release this one for free hoping that you will have as much fun playing it as I had preparing the campaign. However, if you really liked it and you feel that you want to do something more than just saying "thank you" in this forum (which I will appreciate), feel free to click this link and express your feelings in a more hm.. concrete way. This is completely voluntary but will help me keep going with further missions and campaigns, and will also help me persuade my dear wife (who was very supportive during the whole process) that spending so much time in mission editor can bring some visible results ;)

You are welcome baltic_dragon! I know how hard can be to coordinate family and hobby.

All right! I appeal to everyone who enjoys The Enemy Within campaign to help our man to convince his wife that working in DCS campaign editor is worthwhile.

I didn't finish campaign yet but I'm already impatient to see your next project.

Thanks.

It is in the making, I am just testing one of the missions. I aim to make it so good that it can be released as an official DLC, but the standards are really high (Enemy Within didn't qualify) and there is still a lot of work ahead of me, but I hope to get there in a couple of months. Thanks once again!

Great! I'll be here.

DCS is great environment but in my opinion there is lack of content like good campaigns and missions. So, I believe that profitability of effort for creating official DLC will be justified.

Anyhow when you create next DLC official or unofficial I will buy/donate one license for sure.

FWIW, I consider Enemy Within a better made campaign than Ultimate Argument. I am curious what standards it did not meet? (if it's confidential then never mind).
