Have the DK2 and tried the CV1 extensively.

I didn't see that much difference in the DK2 and CV1 at least in the applications I tried a few months ago (last November)

Judder has always been a problem and didn't see it resolved in the CV1. Again in the applications I was using and with older runtime perhaps. Maybe the code changed lately and they solved the issue.

Keep in mind I am using those HMDs for serious simulation (project I am doing in my company) so you milage may vary for normal gaming.

Way better than the Rift? Do you me the DK2, or do have you the Rift CV1 already?

Thanks AstroEMA. I have both on order so I'll see if I experience the same thing.

I guess it may have a lot to do with content you were using as Wags suggested the exact opposite to your findings, when he suggested that the difference between the DK2, and CV1 were like night and day, and the use of Time Warp smoothed out any judder when frames fell below 90.

Wanted to ask here and hopefully someone here can confirm one way or the other.

I have my Vive coming in a couple of weeks or less, and I just bought the P-51D, UH-1H, and FC3 for the standalone while they were on sale.

Can someone definitively confirm if the HTC Vive will be compatible (I really hope) with the standalone version? The only reason this feels like a concern is I just have this worry that the Vive will need to run on SteamVR through the steam version. I really hope not.

I skimmed through all the old post here but couldn't find anything on this specifically. It did not dawn on me as a potential problem until after my DCS purchase's. So sorry if this is a repost.

If a dev see's this and can put my fears to rest (or confirm them) that would be appreciated. Holding off on activating my keys until I can find out for sure.

*Edit*

Alright so found a post stating that you "probably" just need to run the "Steam VR" app and then launch the DCS standalone. But if any devs, or players that have used the Vive with the standalone can confirm this will work, it would be much appreciated. Cheers!

Hershberg, I am playing with the Vive and DCS by just enabling the option in DCS.

I do not have the Steam version of DCS.

Awesome! now I can rest easy for the next couple of weeks. And I assume this is with version 1.5?

Cross-posting this from the Oculus thread, hope it's okay - relevant info for the Vive too.

There is a huge amount of information on Reddit now that the NDA is lifted on the Rift.

Something interesting for those of you who made the choice based on Rift's superior optics:

Brightness

"The vive pre messures out to be about 3 times as bright. Here I measured the pre at 390lux, my dk2 at 140lux, and the rift at 130lux."

FOV

"The CV1 is about 80h 90v"

Vive FOV is 92h 105v

Flaring

source

qrBimGP.png

"The vive does have some flaring, but it looks a lot like a camera lens flare. The rift looks like a blur across your vision. I personally prefer the Vive's flare over the oculus." (source)

"I didn't notice it on Vive Pre until I looked for it. Have to compare head-to-head, but I'd say it's stronger on Rift." (source)

Unfortunately I haven't found a pic of the Vive flaring (yet).

This may be interesting to some, regarding the "screen door effect". Also check out some of the images from the description to see some still images (though to be honest, I can't even remember them beeing that "visible" in the Oculus DK 2. And as he states: "To answer the question in three words: It is fine. Not as bad as the DK1 or DK2. Which is to be expected in a consumer VR headset.").

Reading those makes me feel slightly happier in my plan to keep my DK2 and skip the first generation of consumer HMD. 2nd Gen will likely iron out (hopefully) these problems.

That said, I've just gotten used to any gripes the DK2 throws at me. Honestly, I know it's a cliche but the immersion just beats down most if not all of the negative feelings you might get.

I would definitely say if you were considering buying one of the new HMD as a first VR purchase do it - I can't see you being disappointed. Or buy a 2nd hand DK2 for much less and get a pretty damn fine experience too...

Also, remember there are other HMD besides the big two coming out - maybe one of the more expensive ones (guessing at price here) will offer a fix for these problems? Hell, enough capital could possibly buy an SLI Pascal system able to use StarVR at a consistent 90fps and amazing FoV. Maybe..

This is a more accurate set of images via BrandonJLA using a fairly simple and reliable technique. It just confirms my own ideas that the HMDs are specialised for certain activities. Rift will have the better resolution in the center of the eye and Vive will have the larger FOV.

The Rift probably has the best specialisation for DCS (right now) but I like that the Vive has a larger FOV because it help for VR immersion in general. I pre-ordered a Vive on Day 1 to use for general VR.

Smirkza, keep using the DK2 until the performance of VR in DCS is more stable.

The HTC Vive Pre arrived today :D, but I've been too busy and too tired to even open the box, hopefully will no later than Friday.

We also have a the HTC Vive Consumer version pre-ordered which should be arriving in about a week or so. It will be interesting to compare the two.

I'm thinking of ordering an Rift CV1 after all the pre-order shipment dust settles down, just to do some comparison testing for DCS World type applications. But, I think a couple others here are doing the same, so we'll see, as that's on my own dime.

All components for a new system build are in, so I've got to assemble that and get it up and running. Then, hopefully can start getting some videos and reports posted in the next week or so for those who may be interested...

Anyway, I'm done for the day..:sleep::sleep:

VERY EXCITED for you!!!

Please keep us posted!

Wow you got one already ... or just the box :)

I was disappointed to fall into May deliveries but I need time to prepare a room for the Vive and I've not made much progress.

Also, later, If you don't mind please, I'd like some info on how you accomplished the limited room scale functions you showcased in a couple videos some time ago.

I think you'll see what can be done pretty quickly with the Vive. Without any modding you will be able to move around just by fixing the camera, moving and then re-fixing the camera.

It used to be that you could only use the '5' on the numeric keypad for re-fixing the VR camera but hopefully that can be changed so you can bind it to a joystick or button on a Vive wand. Otherwise you'll have to carry around a keyboard to use that method.

Because of the keyboard problem, the other approach I tried was using Combined Arms to jump in and out of units to use their view-port. I made an invisible cube model without a collision shell and I placed him places I where wanted to walk around.

What wasn't working for me when I did that room-scale testing was moving a soldier model around with WASD and using that view. A MOD I had made a few months earlier to make soldier models playable was no longer working in 1.5 and 2.0.

And putting a camera on the Chinook was done with some editing of the lua entry for the Chinook. Manually setting the Chase Cam to be at standing eye level relative to the floor of the helicopter. It worked well. Afterwards I was thinking I just need to build an entire helicopter shell out of plywood so I can walk though it in VR.

Did any of you do a SteamVR test with an i3570K ? My graphics card is a GTX 980 but the the test result shows 97% below 90fps. I guess that processor must be somehow damaged, as the result is rediculously low.

Quanten I had some performance problems for a few weeks and it turned out that my sealed all-in-one Intel water cooler had dried out. A lot of the water had evaporated out of the system and my CPU was throttling because it was running at 90 degrees BUT only under load.

I downloaded HWMonitor so I could monitor my temps and that is how I found the problem.

You can refill the "Intel sealed" CPU water cooling systems but I only found that out after replacing it with a Corsair H80.

Good luck hunting down the gremlins.

Thanks, yes cpu is under heavy load in all applications. Maybe its my new samsung ssd. I used the samsung migration tool to move my operation system. Guess something went wrong there.

Will try it woth a clean setup.

Have fun with your soon delivered vives.

Nice congrats Sentry. You're not in Brissie are you? Thought we could have a Rift/Vive day in DCS.

Thanks, Jar!

I'm not in Bris, but that doesn't mean we can't MP. Would have been good for a tech comparison though.
