I just stumbled on to Virtual Aerobatics a few days ago.. Can anyone tell me what it is and how one can learn it? I am just now getting the P-51 up to speed so I have a long way to go but I would like to learn how to perform aerobatic routines with it and perhaps join a team someday.

S always many thanks,

Steve

The VA server is specifically for training your flight capabilities. You can usually find someone to fly formation with, but even if you can't, you can just practice what you aren't good at until you master it. Then once you're proficient with the aircraft you can hop into the 104th server for some real fun :D

Thanks for the feedback. Is the VA server at Virtual Aerobatics.com or somewhere on DCS? This looks very. challenging. I can barely taxi the P51!

VAS is a great server and always was.

Just one note: The server restarts every 2h or close to 2h, usually at 1h:30m or longer into the mission the server gets nuts...and this has also always been there )

If the server runs already like 1h:34min I do join but really expect a disconn in the next 15-30min. Just so u know and dont do a majestic startup procedure followed by a "disconnected" ;)

forgot to add this as well:

Soemtimes ( well, actually pretty often ) VAS does not show up in the MP list, I have punched it's ip and port into the direct connect pop-up and can connect anytime and dont need to refresh the List multiple times until I see the server.

Yeah concerning the restarts, they are every two hours, like 3pm, 5pm etc.... GMT+1 ( Paris ). The helos are far away from the fixed wing spawn airfields, but you can usually get there pretty easy. There are two carrier groups ( one up north in the bay of Novorossiysk, the other between Sochi and Gudauta ).

Hope to see you there :)

Virtual Aerobatics is a very fun server cause it allows casual players like me to log on, meet some strangers and do stuff like this! :D

Huh? Well silly me. As I am traveling and just realized the multi player client is at home within the game itself of course. See, I told you I can be a knucklehead at times.

Hey thanks! But! Where can a find the multiplayer client? Sorry to be so inept.

You can start DCS and select Multiplayer from the main screen, or run the Multiplayer .exe from your Start menu or inside your DCS folder.

If you're interested in Virtual Aerobatics I recommend reading Pman's articles on the VA website, and also check in on the VA server, plenty of helpful bods on there who will offer advice.

Oh hey, Scorpion!

Very nice flying, it's insipiring!

Thats what I like most about the server it welcomes players of all skill levels.

It's a very fun server. I just wish they moved some C-101 closer to the other planes because right now they have to spend 20-25 minutes just to get to the populated areas.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Hey Guys,

Pleased that you like our little project (Vh-Rock and I)!

VA has been running for 2 years now and has and will continue to be somewhere that we welcome any pilot of any skill level.

When I started VA I didnt have much "time" in those DCS birds and it has been a great journey for me and alot of the other VA regulars to use it to learn alot about those aircraft.

Sadly the map is getting crowded! We cant always put aircraft next to everything, only so many spawn points :(

The helos I moved out of the way so that they were not being annoyed (or annoying!) planes on the ground.

I am glad that someone read my blog as well, I was actually thinking the other day I should do one or two more entries into it as I havent done one for a while.

We also have a teamspeak running where you can find other pilots to fly with, as well as a facebook page too : https://www.facebook.com/VirtualAerobaticsdcs

See you in the Skies!

Oh in addition, the 2 hour restart is there to stop lag building up in DCS.

We found that after 2 hours of running with the number of pilots that we have the server was lagging out and causing problems for people, so it restarts every 2 hours.

Hopefully we will lengthen this in the future as/when DCS becomes more stable with all these people!

Quite a few times I've found the server 32/32 and I cant even get in my own server!

Hi all and thanks for the feedback and encouragement. I am now home and I for sure found the Multplayer login area within the game. (I have been traveling quite a bit over the last few weeks and was trying to sort all of this without the game itself to refer to.)

Now, how does one find a relevant password and the ip/url is the ---.---.---.---. numbers listed in the server name correct?

Many thanks again,

Steve

Here are some tips I can provide you from when I learnt my first steps in formation flying.

Start off easy. Create a small mission with an AI as lead, in your case, a P-51 with a good stable cruising speed(about 250mph). Fly your P-51 close to it and hold a decent distance. The positioning doesn't matter at first. It is important that you fly close to it and learn to use the throttle in formation.

Once you feel comfortable enough with the throttling you should focus on the positioning, still only in level flight without any turns. Join the leading AI in the 'Slot' position to learn to use the elevator controls to stay in position. Don't use your rudder while learning the first steps. They come in use later.

Once you feel confident behind the leading aircraft, change your position to either side and make yourself more familiar flying a solid and somewhat stable position. Once you feel good in level flight, you can go for your first turns.

To practice turns, you may look for a partner to practice with. Someone who can keep the aircraft very stable as leader and who has experience(sounds easier than it is, I know...).

Following an aircraft through turns is not far away from flying your first rolls in formation. It needs more time to practice to work with your throttle and the stick simultaneously. Again, don't use your rudder yet but control your distance to the leading aircraft with your elevators by carefully banking in and out.

For the advanced stuff that goes beyond military purpose, you need an experienced leader to practice rolls and later, loops.

Depending on how much time you can put in practicing formation flying, it can take you up to 9 - 12 month to be good at it. Some are faster, some need more time(I was one of the later).

Joining a virtual air demo team with already existing skills and experience in formation certainly advantages you to join for live shows sooner, so that you won't need to learn the basics before flying the real stuff. Although, many teams welcome everyone who have never flown formations and/or aerobatics before because the amount of virtual airshow pilots is only a very small portion in this community.

Good luck and happy flying! :)

Thanks for the help. I guess my next steps are rudder pedals (thought that I could do without them), Track IR, and getting my aileron, elevator, and rudder axis tuned to my CH Fighterstick.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Rudder pedals make it easier and more comfortable, but they are not required. The first 1 1/2 years, I used the Twist Y-Axis on my X-52 pro for the rudder controls. :music_whistling:

Track IR is something I would recommend every virtual airshow pilot to increase the Situation Awareness during displays, whether in formation or solo.

For smoother controls, you may also tweak/tune your axis curves(Pitch, Roll and Rudder) to make have a very sensitive reacting aircraft.
