Greek's 4K F-18 Build

Recommended Posts

Well I got motivated to build a new cockpit for the upcoming F-18. I was previously in my theater room on a projection screen. After reading this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=117483&highlight=4k and all of the people ditching their current setups for a single large 4K monitor I started looking for a 4K that was around 50". I found a nice Vizio 50" that has a full 4K 60Hz HDMI 2.0 input. I then started to build around it with the idea of the 50" 4K as the center piece and a 22" 1080P monitor mounted below for my instrument cluster in the F-18. I found a nice sports car seat at the salvage yard($30 :D ) and came up with my own design that was close to the ACES II and still very comfortable(I know the F-18 uses NACES lol...I just went with ACES:D). I also built two consoles left and right that are the exact dimensions for the F-18. So I can someday add all of the switch panels if I choose to do so. So here are some pics of the build:

Started with this...

Ended with this...

Also I mounted two Aura Bass shakers under the seat. That are powered by a sub amp located behind the throttle on the left console. I can feel bumps, engines etc real immersive. And I went ahead and added another GTX 970 to the computer to SLI.

I still don't think it'll help you with your autofire aamram's. :)

It looks great, can't wait to get started on my own.

Awesome setup. What kind of performance are you getting from your rig? I plan on upgrading to 4k this fall. Hopefully 2.0 will be out be then too.

I'm getting 27-50 fps with one Gtx970 at 3840x2160 60Hz.... I'm working on getting my second GTX 970 setup in SLI unfortunately I'm having an issue with what looks like the SLI Bridge. New one on the way delivering tomorrow. So we'll see.

Very nice practical setup! How did you mount the TM MFDs to the lower monitor?

Thanks! I used good quality velcro, works perfect. Had to cut the little tabs off the back for where the stabilizers were. But they mount flush and are nice and sturdy.

Fantastic.. simple, creative. You've given me some ideas already to improve on my pit.

Did you maintain the seat rails to allow forward/aft adjustments of the seat ?

Also what is the cylindrical stand made of that you are securing the stick to ?

Thank you, yes rails are let intact and seat is adjustable. The cylinder is made of discs of 3/4" MDF bolted together. I can actually adjust the height of the mount. I used two 8", 1/4" Dia hex bolts screwed in from below to two recessed nuts that hammer flat into the top piece.

So following a design I got from SageOT I changed from stacked wooded discs to a 4" PVC for my stick mount. I raised it a bit too.. Nice and stable and a nice change...

Love the setup. I just wanted to ask about your 4k Vizio. How is the input lag? I just received a Seiki 42" 4k w/ HDMI 2.0, and I cannot use it at all with my computer. It's at least a quarter second delay from when I move the mouse to when I see the screen change. I do love Vizio (I have two already for my TVs) but I didn't know how they'd be as a computer monitor.

Make sure you have all of the post processing "stuff" turned off on the TV. On my LG I had to select PC as the input source and turn off the "TruMotion" feature. Yours may have something similar.

Tried.. the TV doesn't have a "game mode" but it does have a few features like 3D sound and two other things that I turned off. Nothing helps =\

I'm wondering if people would be kind enough to post their 4k TVs/Monitors over 40" that work well as a main desktop display & DCS. Model numbers would be amazing!

Looking at the owner's manual for your TV you should turn off MEMC and DLC.

Hope this helps.

John

EDIT: And use the HDMI3 input.
