colin5392 Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 We have Combined Arms (ground vehicles), we have the ultimate Close Air Support aircraft in the Flight Sim arena (A-10C); helicopters (attack and transport), we have the superb Edge scenery coming in - so when will you be looking to complete the whole package with a First Person Shooter (team) module, a la Arma or Project Reality? This will ensure that DCS will be unbeatable in ALL arenas. I hope that more jets will be created in the future as we seem to be inundated with WW2 warplanes nowadays. Thoughts?
Silver_Dragon Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 (edited) Actually a First Person Shooter into the DCS: W, require a great quantity of work to implemented them, and deep changes over the engine not planned. ED have talk about them no interest to implement a realistic FPS on DCS: W and has out of the scope of your type of simulation environment scope. In some aspect has similarly to a naval or a ground "pilot-able" vehicle at a "harcore" level similar to ARMA, Steel Beast or other hardcore simulator series. I think, if ED make some type of improvement on that camp, We can´t get a good "harcore" implement-ate systems, environment and simulation in 5 - 10 years if applicable and ED put some type of specialize plan about a FPS. Flogger23m Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 That would have to be an entirely different game, and require a different engine. EDGE would look atrocious at ground level. Graphics aside, there are many technical things that would likely have to be added to the engine. Even doing basic BF/CoD style infantry would require a lot of work. Its not a matter of plopping in a 3D model or two. Even ArmA 3 is rather lacking from an infantry perspective. In short, probably never. And they shouldn't bother because the result wouldn't be worth playing either.
Weta43 Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 ... and require a different engine. EDGE would look atrocious at ground level. I can't see ED prioritising an FPS element in the immediate future, but if they do, it will look just as it does in DCS(2).CA, which will be at ground level.. Which I'm guessing won't be quite like a 2015 FPS (though the map will be astronomically larger than any current FPSmap), but suspect won't be that different from FPS games of not that long ago.. So quite playable if not FPS state of the art Cheers.
WinterH Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 This suggestion show up with considerable frequency, but the answer is simply the same. It is as stated above by Flogger and Silver_Dragon above. However computers may improve, their hardware resources, and a developer's software development resources are still, and always finite. An infantry game (not even saying sim) and an air combat sim each have significantly incompatible requirements to perform adequately in their roles. I just don't see bazillions of buildings with interiors (that area a must for FPS) which need much more rendering power than a cube building. I doubt it could be done to level of FPS games a few years ago. It would have been damn cool, but I just don't see it happening if I look realistically. I'd be happy if I turn out wrong. As for the "inundation with WWII planes" comment, this one comes more often than thread title, even if it also has an answer that doesn't change. Currently, not counting helicopters, and counting all fyable versions of flankers, A-10s and MiG-29s as a single entry for each, we have 11 jets, vs 3 prop warbirds. Compare with known to be in development modules: - We have Meteor, Vampire, F-14, Mirage 2000C, Eurofighter, F-18C and L39 on the jet side (counting F-14 version as one, even though this time they're quite different). - Spitfire IX, Spitfire XIV, P-47, P-40, Wildcat, Sea Fury, Bearcat on prop birds side (counting Spitfires seperate, and adding in Sea Fury and Bearcat just because they are props, even if they are quite postwar). With 7 vs 7, in development breakdown is barely equal for both sides. So if anything, prop side of sim just barely catching up in diversity of choices with jets. And again, this is without counting helicopters :). Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V DCS-Dismounts Script
Silver_Dragon Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 A point I missing to add to the conversation. To a full work on a FPS into DCS: W, ED will need a Dedicate Team to your main develop team similarly to the "Minsk Team" ( centred on Map / theater develop) (SmartGraph?), or a new Belsimtek (dedicate to plane / helos) with implement new features and improvements to the FPS environment. That solution will need applicable to the others two "teams" missing (Ground and Naval), but in that aspect I can be wrought but the CA team can be set as the "cadre" of a initial ground team (vehicle). The "bad" part of that solution has if ED will put the resources to build that "teams". Rogue Trooper Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Infantry FPS will surely not happen for a very very long time in DCS, if at all. But good quality DCS AI infantry would be a dream come true and is doable. Troops that run for cover when being attacked, move around buildings, spread out, get into choppers and egress transports would be great! DCS Jet pilots would probably not notice something like this too much but for us "down in the dirt with the grunts" chopper pilots... Yes please!
