After flying the Mi-8 for a few months, I have decided to make it my primary aircraft and so I trying to learn all of the systems but have a few questions for the experts:

1. Does the signal flare dispenser work?

2. Although the Doppler control panel say map angle which suggests true north, does it use magnetic north headings as I seem to be about 6 degrees off at the moment.

3. Is the combustion heater used for cabin heat or fuel preheating.

4. How and when do you use the DC and AC rheostats? I have noticed that the system charges at 32V DC, this seems high for a 24V system, do the rheostats reduce the charging voltage and increase it under loads or do they just balance the system.

5. How and when do you use the PU-26 control panel (gyromagnetic compass set)?

6. Can the R-828 only be used as an ADF for ARC-UD beacons or can it be used to point towards any preset HF frequency such as an airfield?

7. Is there any documentation anywhere explaining the use of the fire extinguisher and fire extinguishers test system? (not included in manual)

8. Is there any documentation explaining the use of the governor control panel? (not included in manual)

9. Is the air horn working?

Thanks in advance and thanks BST for this great aircraft which in my opinion is the by far the best in DCS!

1- Yes

2- Yes, remove 6° for nav

3- cabin heat

4- don't know

5- never use

6- never test, i always use adf

7- it automatic but if you always have fire warning, push the button under the warning light in question. You have two shots

8- don't know

9- yes

People fly planes, pilots fly helicopters

1. Does the signal flare dispenser work?

Yes? I put a qurestion mark here because I could swear that it works, but for some reason, I just can't quite remember...

2. Although the Doppler control panel say map angle which suggests true north, does it use magnetic north headings as I seem to be about 6 degrees off at the moment.

Well, the magnetic variation in Georgia is between +6 and +7 degrees, so that jives.

3. Is the combustion heater used for cabin heat or fuel preheating.

Cabin heat. The combustion heater does preheat fuel, but that's only for itself.

4. How and when do you use the DC and AC rheostats? I have noticed that the system charges at 32V DC, this seems high for a 24V system, do the rheostats reduce the charging voltage and increase it under loads or do they just balance the system.

You're supposed to use the rheostats to keep the DC voltage at 27-29 volts. It's a 28VDC system. On the real thing, we never touch them...set it and forget it.

5. How and when do you use the PU-26 control panel (gyromagnetic compass set)?

I have not messed with this in-game lately, but I have real-world documentation on it. I should probably put that in its own thread, though...

6. Can the R-828 only be used as an ADF for ARC-UD beacons or can it be used to point towards any preset HF frequency such as an airfield?

I'm not good with the in-game radios, and I know some others here are very good at it, so I'll leave this one for them. But I can tell you this from the real manuals: "The two-way R-828 radio station is designed for crystal-stabilized voice communication in amplitude modulation (AM) mode of helicopter crew with ground control points and ground moving objects and fixed installations.

In addition, the radio is also used as a receiver of VHF automatic direction finder APK-UD for helicopter flying to operating moving and fixed radio stations."

7. Is there any documentation anywhere explaining the use of the fire extinguisher and fire extinguishers test system? (not included in manual)

What do you want to know? I can describe in detail how it works, but I'm trying to decide if that's best placed in a new thread about the fire extinguishing system...

9. Is the air horn working?

YES!

Thanks for the reply. With respect to the fire extinguisher, I understand how to set off each of the extinguisher units but when I turn the radial switch on the test panel, this also sets off the extinguishers.

For the governor control panel, I am interested to know what each switch does and when I may need to use them, and symptoms of an auto governor failure.

Later I will see if I can get the horn and signal flare dispenser working.

Make sure the test switch is in the down position. If it's up, the system just sees a completed circuit when the lights come on and fires the primary fire bottle

If the governor fails, you should get the EEG OFF light similar to what you see before the engine is running. Other than that, the EEG switches are left in the OPERATE position and you can forget about them unless you want to test the governors.

Hi cib, I have the weapons circuits up but still no signal flares using the panel behind the pilots head. Any ideas?

I will try this tonight. AlphaOneSix, I for one would appreciate separate threads on the fire extinguisher and governing systems.

Does the air-horn work?

YES!

Question: What is actually the point of that? In the outside view the air-horn is not very loud, barley hearable over the engine/rotor noise even, and I guess you won't be honking at other traffic anyway?

I think the horn is in cabin. I guess is used by the pilot to inform when its safe to "disembark, jump, rope down etc..

I think it's labeled "siren". It's on the left overhead panel, underneath the air pressure gauges.

Weapon system circiut brakers have to be on as well.
