dotChuckles Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 No confusion here just ran another test: [in graphics tab in the left column] shadows = off and on the right side of the page, flat terrain shadows = off is the best FRate achieved for those 2 settings. Choosing the additional options in the shadows drop down box decreases FRate as you go through the list toward ultra. flat terrain shadows = on further decreases the FRate on any choosen shadows selection. 12-08-2015 05:32 PM Not really what I asked though. I asked if those settings would achieve best visuals at the cost of frames. Although it's not an issue of frames as I have the PC power to run it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Corrigan Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 Gentlemen, this is a bug report. Move it to another thread, thanks. Win10 x64 | SSDs | i5 2500K @ 4.4 GHz | 16 GB RAM | GTX 970 | TM Warthog HOTAS | Saitek pedals | TIR5
davidtsw Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 (edited) So I'm reading this almost 4 years later and we still haven't got more options for terrain shadows... It would be good if ED started paying more attention to what players say. Is it really that difficult to add a few more options there ? I want my aircraft to cast a proper shadow but don't want all the trees to do so since it kills my framerate. All we need is, as suggested years ago in this very thread, separate options for aircraft, trees and buildings. I'll check again in 2023. Edited April 3, 2019 by davidtsw
Strong05 Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Your airplane does cast a proper shadow with shadows set to ultra, high, or med, and maybe even low (haven't tested) and terrain set to flat. 5800X3d, 32GB DDR4@3400, 6800 xt, Reverb G2, Gunfighter/TMWH
davidtsw Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Your airplane does cast a proper shadow with shadows set to ultra, high, or med, and maybe even low (haven't tested) and terrain set to flat. You might wanna double check it. It doesn't. I literally just had a look since I usually fly with shadows set to medium so I thought high + flat terrain shadows might do the trick but there's no difference. And ultra is not even there so I don't know what you're talking about mate. So yeah, it's a choice between crappy aircraft shadows and unplayable framerate. It would probably take 15 minutes to fix for ED. Frustrating.

Just as it would probably take the same time for you to change the graphic card so that you don't have to make such difficult choices again. There is an unofficial method to use the "ultra" shadows - just edit the options.lua and set shadows to "0" - watch and admire :) Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria

Thankfully most people realize that they, as paying customers, deserve something better than "just get a GTX 1080ti and piss off". All that's been asked of ED in this thread is some more graphical settings to deal with the issue.

It's your attitude and lack of thought - on what basis you assume it would take devs 15 minutes to work that out?! How come you're so sure that one option would solve your problem with shadows and fps? You dug out 4 year old thread with a wish that did not come true. There are thousands of such - look at the wishlist. It's NTTR subforum btw. Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
davidtsw Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 (edited) How do I know that adding a separate setting for the aircraft shadows would solve my problem ? Umm, because then I wouldn´t have all the trees/buildings cast advanced shadows which kills my fps at low level ? That´s how I know. It isn´t rocket science. Yeah, I thought there´s no point in opening a new thread if this one has been ignored. Go figure. 15 minutes is obviously not meant to be an accurate number but I think you´ll agree there are things we ask for that would take lots of work and simple fixes which could be done easily. Adding a separate setting for aircraft shadows is definitely a simple thing that doesn´t require the whole team to dedicate their precious time to this for days. Now what makes you think it would take so much work ? Cause that´s what you´re suggesting here. Edited April 6, 2019 by davidtsw
Eldur Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 So a moderator edited in "TURN FLAT SHADOWS OFF". I'd like to ask about that. If they provide me with a new rig that's capable of I'd gladly do that... I had shadows set to flat on my 970, but even the 1080 is far from being enough to do the real shadows... I'm down to well under 15fps with shadows not set to flat at the moment.
