Flying the A10c is not as difficult as it looks. I put it off for so long because I thought it would be too difficult to learn and I had no one to teach me. One day I decided to put on my big boy pants and learn the entire beast alone. I want to help you kick start in that same direction.

The first hurdle of learning to fly the A10c is to set up your HOTAS. There is a HOTAS made by thrustmaster that is identical to the real A10c controls. If you own these controls the only hurdle is memorizing the controls and button names.

If you do not own these and you own something else like CH products you will have to manually create the TMS, CMS, DMS controls and more onto your more limited HOTAS. Limited by the number of buttons and switches.

This is not that big of an issue and you can overcome it like I did. You start with training mission number one and map the controls needed for it. Then you do the next mission and the next. By the time you finish you will have mapped all necessary A10c controls to something. Make sure you note what you mapped it to and what buttons do what. That way you can remember now and for later when you have taken a nice break from flying.

After you have jumped that hurdle do the training missions again. This time pay attention and take detailed notes on all the systems and how they work. Make a separate page in a notebook for each system and weapon. Get as detailed as you can because you can always short hand something later.

Once you have completed all of those training missions go ahead and try DRAGONS mission pack. He offers several missions that will let you choose targets based on your skill level and you can change your weapon loadout in the editor if need be. He also offers a JTAC training mission.

After you feel comfortable with the weapon systems do the DRAGON JTAC training mission. This will teach you radio operation and interaction with JTAC with is necessary in most A10c missions. Also you will learn why a JTAC is so valuable and when you don’t have one it can suck to find targets.

Once you feel comfortable with JTAC go and try out the mission surrounded in the A10c mission section. This is default with the DCS game. Use TACVIEW to do an after action report and see how awesome you did. I would learn how bad I was at spotting targets and how much time I wasted. I would see how I didn’t make wide enough turns to give myself time and find out exactly who shot what and when.

The mission surrounded is a group of friendly forces being attacked from different directions. JTAC will give you pin point information and then general radio calls will tell you direction from friendlies. You can practice using JTAC and/or just visually acquiring them with TGP and looking out of the cockpit.

If you can successfully do this mission until you run out of ordinance without dying or getting shot up you have come a long way since square one. You should be proud of yourself and your effort. I would go to the Through the Inferno server and test your skills there. It is great COOP experience for all aircraft types that I've had the pleasure of helping design missions for.

I suggest the following youtubers for refence videos:

Sc Avenger

Rafildude

RL will keep my availability guessing but I will be happy to train you after you have configured your controls, done the training missions, and can fly the aircraft. I want to be able to jump in next to you and fly with some basic knowledge. I want to be able to call out TMS, CMS, DMS controls and you to know that they are programmed on your HOTAS. These basic things are necessary. I can’t tell you where your controls are because most likely we don’t have the same setup.

Mission: Surrounded (AIR START)

The mission area is pretty straight forward and great for training. There is a road that runs EAST and WEST. There are some curvy parts in it but otherwise easy to follow. In the middle is a small city with a few buildings. We’re talking only big enough to hide 4 abrams tanks and JTAC. It is marked as a steerpoint on your flightplan and is easy to find.

To the EAST and WEST the road is bare until you get to a medium sized city on each side. This is where the enemy columns of four vehicles are going to spawn. The mission will call these targets out but you can also use JTAC for help and coords. JTAC is not the best option here. Visual and situational awareness is better.

A road intersects near the friendlies that heads to the NORTH. Half way through the mission is when you’ll interact with an SA-8 that is in a column that comes from that road.

The point of this mission is to be visually aware of your position at all times by looking outside the cockpit. Give yourself a decent distance to orbit either the EAST or WEST side when targets come up. Watch for AAA/SAM threats in the columns and kill as much as you can.

Use markpoints on the EAST and WEST town to give a point of reference for ease of slewing the TGP back and forth. If you don’t use that start where the friendlies are and work your way EAST/WEST to find the targets they call out.

You may or may not have enough weapons to kill everything. You can modify the loadout however you wish in the editor for what weapons you want to use. Maverick Ds, GBU 12, GBU 38 are great options.

If you can spot, engage, track, and kill all these targets with ease and no frustration then you are ready to kick ass elsewhere. Most common problem that people have is poor situational awareness. Not looking outside the cockpit. Not orbiting a far enough distance away to give plenty of time to line bomb drops or maverick shots. Not spotting and avoiding the danger areas for AAA/SAM in the columns.

Tips: Once you shoot a target the rest of the column splits up and pulls off the side of the road. They will stay there for a while before moving on toward friendlies. Use mavericks to hit the AAA/SAM and make the convoy stop. Kill the light APCs with guns and tank with bombs. Save the mavs for the AAA/SAM threats.

Training Goals: Use the TGP and outside visual reference to track targets quickly and effectively. Deploy proper weapon systems and conserve for all targets. Engage AAA/SAMs without being engaged. Or if engaged properly avoiding death.

Best of Luck!

Wow, what an awesome invite!

I would *definitely* be interested but I'm totally bogged down right now. Hopefully I'll get clear of my pesky responsibilities and be able to get into a "deep dive" of the systems soon.

Thank you very much for the offer!

I would too, but I need to increase my abilities first. I'll be back! Thanks for the offer.

I'm currently in the same process as you were in. I'm going through the training mission now (again :) ).

Maybe we will see each other on the server in few weeks.

Do, or do not, there is no try.

Im in the same boat,, been flying the A-10C since release, only problem is,, I fly for a month or 2, get caught up into personal stuff, so Im out for a few months,,, forget things, retrain,, cycle thru the same thing over and over,, havnt flown all summer,, hope to get back in in a month or so,,,, retrain all over,, but at least you pick it all back up real quick as opposed to the initial training.

Awesome! Don't get discouraged. Debrief each mission you do. Learn from it and learn how to be better next time. Take breaks and walk around. I'm always happy to help put where I can. I love making videos but there are so many others who have the patience to create quality products. So give them a try. Hope to see you there.

Fakum - If you take really good notes and keep them handy it is real easy to relearn. I forgot how to make steerpoint my spi and Google didn't help me. Haha Tms down for anyone wondering. You get to pick it up real quick when you come back. Finding people to fly with is what makes you keep wanting more.

Hi

I am relatively new to the Warthog but I'm trying my best.

I would love to fly with other more experienced pilots with a bit of patience to a newb like me. I am struggling with bomb runs and inflight refueling.

I also want to go deeper into systems like CDU and TAD programming and would love to do some coop missions to learn more.

Any help would be appreciated so I hope this offer is still up.

More than any other thing that pertains to the body it partakes of the nature of the divine." — Plato, Phaedrus.

I sent you a PM.

Please go ahead and add me on steam. I will be available. I can assist with bomb runs and EVERYONE has problems with air refuel in all aircraft. It is a skill you'll have to practice and practice and swear at until you finally get it.

CDU and TAD are pretty simple once you get to know what buttons do what. We can also work on those. Feel free to message me on steam any time.

I'm dusting everything off. Took a little time to fly a 777 in p3d on vatsim. Good times but sometimes you just need to shoot stuff. I am hoping this thread can be of assistance to people. I may be able to assist with questions or in game training this weekend. I use the the default mission surrounded as a good training tool. That and the open conflict server.

Reply here and send a PM my way if you're interested.
