Elwood Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Hi all, I recently deeply customized a couple of gimbal joysticks removing the springs and adding some friction on both X/Y axes, so the effect is that the stick "stays" where I leave it with no force, letting me to use both hands for additional mouse/keyboard input or to drink my coffee or simply stretching my hands.... Trim is no more required and anyway I think is a better solution, I'm more precise and in general more solid idea of required cyclic to maintain stable flight. Trimming "hide" sensations as leave only a reference with the previous trimmed position and not from the real stick neutral position, yes you can monitor the UI but it's not the same thing... Any similar experience? Impressions?
Cibit Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Tried without springs in my old X52, it flopped about all over the place. Elwood Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Sure, the Oculus is great and a no spring/trim solution is even better in it. Using my DK2 the feeling is even better I'll share a bit in while. Flopped all over the place because the gimbal axes were just free to move?

If it's not too much to ask, yes  I'm interested to know which technique you used, to see if it's something I can use on my stick (Warthog). You mentioned gimbal joysticks, so I'm not sure it will apply to WH.

j0nx Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Absolutely LOVE my X55 without spring as it seems so much smoother but unfortunately you can't take your hand off the stick or you will get a mast strike because the stick will flop down quick in whatever direction it's leaning. I just can't justify a C-tek or Komodo with dampeners though so will either have to deal with it or reinstall the green spring again. It would be nice to have some kind of dampener on this stick though. bxlplk Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Yup! I got a Sidewinder (FFB) and unplugged the power, and it does exactly what yours does -- stays where I leave it and gives very little resistance to move. Trying to hover with a spring joystick is absolutely maddening.

It would be nice to have some kind of dampener on this stick though. Same here, the springless X-55 is really good for heli flying, but as you pointed out it's unpracticable in the long run. I did simply cut the biggest spring (that I'll never use, I guess) so that it has the exact height than the stick plate-to-base height. That way, it's very light on the friction, and comes back naturally to center. Somewhat of a compromise, even though it's not ideal in jets, it's rather nice for choppers and props. Really interested in the dampeners, didn't think about that. I'm wondering where these can be found Whisper of old OFP & C6 forums, now Kalbuth. Holbeach Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I made bungees from elastic bands twisted together, then fixed to the 4 corners with cable ties. Springs were clamped together with ties. Worked perfectly with F-86 and P-51, but not with F-15, which needs a positive centre. At the moment I have cable ties clamping the springs, giving just enough pressure to give a centre and it works well. .. ASUS 2600K 3.8. P8Z68-V. ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080Ti, RAM 16gb Corsair. And if you add modifier to X,Y axis? This axis only will send command for game if you press Pinky button. So you can remove hands from grip without "collateral effects". :) Is need remember to move the stick for approximated last position - when axis freeze - before re-engage axis or a jump will occur.

Sorry I didn't answer, I've only just seen this post. No picture, but the idea is: Mount the joy on a wooden block, about a foot square, screw in 4 long screws in the corners and make 4 bundles of elastic bands. Attach them to the base of the handle with a cable tie, then loop the other ends over the screws after twisting them into a bungee. Use 2 ties to compress the springs. Adjust the tension of the bands so there is just enough to hold the stick upright. There will be very little resistance to stick movement and trimming is not needed. :joystick: Cheap and quick. Ideal for helicopters. .. ASUS 2600K 3.8. P8Z68-V. ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080Ti, RAM 16gb Corsair. M2 NVME 2gb. 2 SSD. 3 HDD. 1 kW ps. X-52. Saitek pedals. ..
Rabb Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Yup! I got a Sidewinder (FFB) and unplugged the power, and it does exactly what yours does -- stays where I leave it and gives very little resistance to move. Trying to hover with a spring joystick is absolutely maddening. Well, a completely loose joystick is very tricky to use. With Sidewinder FFB2 you can let go of it and the stick will become completely loose. Sensor which detects player's hand is at front of a grip. In most cases, with minor deflection, it will stay put. However, if you are looking for realistic stick feel, I would recommend editing FF effect files or (easier) using either 32 or 64-bit version of this nice little software: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1628706&postcount=43 https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/21608-Microsoft-Sidewinder-Force-Feedback-2?p=1330641&viewfull=1#post1330641 It's not installed, just download it and run it. You can adjust centering, friction and damper force there. Also, you can select a joystick button in the drop-down list on the right side which actually works as a helicopter trim - by pressing it, the stick assumes new neutral position. It is very small and useful for realism seekers. Recommendations and notes: - SimFFB memorizes your last settings; - Unfortunately, this software cannot work together with in-game force feedback - it's either in-game force feedback or this customized stick feel; - Force feedback should be turned off in game; - You can start multiple instances of this software, but the moment the second instance of it starts, you lose all effects - only one SimFFB should be running; - It is possible that occasionally SimFFB would stop working, just minimize the game, close it and start it again, it will continue working properly in game; - It is not affected by old MS SW FFB2 flaw - losing force feedback on Alt+Tab.
