Questions about tanker radio/TACAN

Hello I noticed some things about the tanker frequencies selection, I don't know if it's bug or not.

The tanker was on 150Mhz and TACAN 05Y (it was the wrong type of tanker but this doesn't matter much here I suppose).

 

(1) I tried to dial 150.000 but the radio says 225.00 instead. It looks like up to 143.000 is ok, higher is not. Is it a normal limitation?

 

(2) I tried to dial 05Y on the TACAN panel but there is no 0 on left digit selector, it goes from 1 to 12. So, no TACAN either, another limitation?

 

(3) The TACAN mode switch (A/A, T/R, REC, OFF) seem to be implemented as an analog rotary instead of discrete with 4 positions.

Hey,

 

Ad 1. V/UHF works between 118 and 143.975 MHz, UHF works between 225 and 399.975 MHz. It is normal and as in the real plane.

 

Ad 2. I don't think TACAN for S-3B will work at all, AFAIK it is not TACAN capable.

 

Ad 3. It seems so, but I think it is bound to change.

I thought VHF AM was up to 151.something as i read in an A-10C doc, I must have misread (or it's just the Mirage's radio that can't do it).

 

For 2, Let's put the tanker out of the picture and imagine for a minute that it's not an S-3, I'm really talking about dialing a 05Y TACAN inside the Mirage, nothing more.

I must be missing something - probably right under my nose :huh: I can only dial those:

Y15

Y25

Y35

Y45

Y55

Y65

Y75

Y85

Y95

Y105

Y115

Y125

 

The left rotary will jump from 1 to 12 without a blank or a 0 to select.

 

Also, I noticed the XY switch is also analog, but it is less noticeable since it will go quickly between X-Y anti clockwise (it wraps around), clockwise X-Y is much slower.

Currently, you can't set any TCN channel from 1 to 9, because the 0 is missing. Razbam knows this, I reported this bug a few weeks ago (bug was affirmed).

 

Zeus said also, the Y band doesn't work at the moment, so you can't reach any aircraft with A/A TCN, like the KC-135.

It's not fixed, thought the issue is the inability to set X 01, etc. i.e. the M2KC lacks a leading zero.

Yes, if you make your own missions and set the tanker to use a unused TACAN frequency higher than X 09

 

Is the Y band the only way?

No, set the tanker to a frequency higher than X 09 i.e. X 10

 

 

Then in the Mirage:

 

●TACAN - to AA mode

●Channel selector to X 10

●HSI mode - TACAN

 

to get bearing and range to the tanker.

 

The problem with the Mirage is that DCS tankers with 'basket' refuelling lack TACAN, so AFAIK, you need to use MOOSE or similar to add it to a S-3B Tanker, etc.

 

I've used the KC-135 to practice TACAN navigation/rendezvous, but for AAR practice, used radar to find the tanker.

 

Edit Note: The MOOSE sample mission is called 'RAD-010 - Beacons'

Great, I've never tried that combination, just X _1. Must have been fixed?

I actually used Y and just the number 1 in the ME. It worked like a charm with the kc 135

Yeah, definitely fixed, no 0 but blank figure is now available. Like I said, I did it yesterday with channel 5Y

It was, monthes ago actually :)

And "no leading 0" is a feature.
