db_zero Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I don't play a whole lot-I simply don't have the time like I used to when I could spend hours reading a manual and hours more flying around learning how to fly. I basically like to just go to the mission editor once in a while, create something simple and watch. With my current 6+ year old system it was ok with the Black Sea area-I have a AMD Phenom IIx4 955, 8 gigs of RAM and a GTX 760 with 2 7200RPM Hard Drives. The new Nevada range however takes a long time to load and runs like a pig when you have a lot of stuff and the mission editor using it can also run like a pig. I will say the Nevada module does look nice. I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade. I ended up getting a system with an Intel I7 6700K CPU, 16 Gigs DDR4-2800, 2 Intel 540s SSD drives and Nvidia GTX-970 GPU. I'll be eating a lot of Top Ramen for a while, but hopefully my new rig, when I get it will be up to the task. I do play Flight Sim X too from time to time so I should also see a boost there too. It also seem like at some point getting another 16 gig or RAM might not be a bad idea. I currently run Windows 7 Pro. I was considering staying with it, but opted for Windows 10 Pro. I have Windows 8.1 running on my laptop. I was not impressed when I first used it and still not really crazy about it, but I've learned to live with it. Not sure what to expect with Windows 10.
Winston 60 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 My system is now 6 years old (see signature). It's a 1st gen i7 with GTX 680's and I get a constant 60 fps (v-sync on) even with mirrors on using DCS release version 1.5. I've been thinking of upgrading, but DCS runs so well and my other 2 flight sims (IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover w/Team Fusion mod and Rise of Flight) also run nearly 60 fps too. Maybe I will build a new computer.... next year. Apache600 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Hello, Welcome, and Congrats on the new system :) I run windows 10 and have zero issues with it. Much better than the god awful 8.1 that was preceded on this computer. Hadwell Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 (edited) DCS isn't really a money pit, it takes some money to get into, but once you have a decent modern PC that can run the game well, a good stick, pedals, and trackir, and bought all the modules, it's free to just play, the odd 50$ here and there for a couple of modules a year... in the end, it costs less than a premium account for war thunder or some other mmo annually, even more so if you buy in-game stuff in mmos, like converting free exp... Teapot Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Agree with Hadwell, DCS isn't a money pit .. in the long run it's much cheaper than mmo's that's for sure. Much better value too! :) "A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft." Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!
db_zero Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 I made the "Money Pit" statement in jest... Thinking back its sort of ironic. Been playing flight sims for 30 years and think I've owned just about about every flight sim ever made. Always wanted something like DCS and now that its arrived I don't play it as much as I would have when I was really into flight sims. Still I'm happy to support it. I still have IL2, Rise of Flight and Falcon 4, BoB loaded on my current system. Cliff of Dover intrigues me, heard about the issues when first released, but hear its better. I'll look around and see what other have in terms of controls and other fancy gadgets, that we used to dream about 20 or so years ago. The last last fancy control setup I has was the Thrustmaster setup with rudder pedals.
Hoogs Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Don't expect to see a huge difference in FSX. You're going to see more but the stuttering is still there with high detailed scenery. FSX graphics engine is outdated. Sent from my LG-H812 using Tapatalk
Oceandar Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Probably most of our hobbies are money pit. DCS is not really money pit, I agree with Hadwell and Teapot. Compare to RC hobby, DCS is nothing. Sad true story I almost lost my marriage because of it (RC)... Gam Zeh Ya'avor - King Salomon Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 To think, I could've spent this money on something wholesome! Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!
Malefic Rage Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Flight sims to tend to require more financial investment that typical games, especially if you really intend to get into them in depth. Between the need for a decent rig, the peripherals you buy and the modular nature of the product expansions, you'll end up paying a bit. Mostly because it is a relatively niche market. IMO the fun and satisfaction is worth it though.
