Hey guys,

I have found some pretty annoying AI behaviours that started to appear somewhere around 2 patches ago. Can anyone confirm having the same issues?

A) ORBIT

For some reason, AI flight when entering orbit has a tendency to slow down to around 130 knots IAS and loose altitude. Sometimes it happens despite having the afterburner on. After a minute or so AI would try to regain set altitude and speed.

B) FOLLOW

Same goes for the "Follow" command - quite often AI would slow down and only after some time would they try to catch up with the plane they are supposed to follow, which takes ages...

C) ENGAGE

In many instances missions built in previous builds would have broken "engage" command - be it enroute task or simple one. No matter what the ROE setting, the AI would just fly to the closest base.

Anyone else noticed it?

I've been experimenting with AI behavior.

(1) Here I describe some of my findings with respect to formation:

One thing that I notice is the anti-collision logic is responsible for a lot of the erratic (to the point of frenzied) flying. If there is a unit too close in front of an AI, it slows down radically and then speeds up. Sometimes this can result in them porpoising or doing vertical cycles. Not sure if that is responsible for your situtation (B).

(2) Another thing I noticed: mission files have "history" that affects AI behavior. E.g., create a few group and a simple route. Let them fly to check behavior. Then go back to the ME and for waypoint 0 and set formation option. Let them fly and see them do crazy stuff as they try to get into formation. Fine. Go back to ME and DELETE the formation option. Ideally, now everything should be like before. Nope. They do the crazy stuff to get into a formation. True, it's the default formation rather than whatever was set and then deleted. But the fact is it is still different behavior than was there from a "clean" mission. This is just an example, of course. But if similar issues hold with, e.g., waypoints being added/deleted? Maybe that would explain some of the behavior you are seeing?

I've noticed that with "Follow" an F-15C can't catch up to aircraft doing 400+ knots. Even when it's running afterburner. I think it depends on the aircraft. I've had to switch out F-15C's for Tornado's because of that issue in some of my missions.

Found similar issues with Escort. Escort aircraft will mostly follow their assigned target group but often will suddenly fall behind and never catch up. Additionally they will detect an enemy aircraft out 100km plus and if that enemy aircraft ever climbs to near or above the altitude of the escorts the escort aircraft will commence a hard climb to regain height advantage. This is even if their engagement range is set to much less than the range to the enemy aircraft on the escort route task.
