Cowboy10uk Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 Hi guys, I know no ones Intrested, but I'm over the moon, I've just spent an hr flying this magnificent helo and it didn't kill me, granted she made need a wee bit of work in the hanger tonight, but hey what's a few rotor blades between friends. ;) luckily I was only at 5ft when I flew backwards into a aircraft burn, but hey, I still landed it. :) After days of not even being able to take off, it started coming together today, sure the first few take offs were not pretty, but slowly I started to take off constantly and in the direction I wanted to go. ;). My landings again were not pretty but I was again starting to get used to her, and managing to get her on the ground in one piece every time, apart from the last one. :) Granted I wasn't landing where I was planning to, but that's not the gazelles fault, I have never been able to work out the correct approach in ANY helo I'm flying, I always without fail, either end up hovering at 50ft, or under or overshoot where I was aiming to land. I don't think I've once managed to land where I first planned to. Anyhow, just wanted to say Thankyou Polychop, she is a wonderful aircraft, think I need a good few hours yet, before I can even think about moving onto the weapon systems, but damn what a challenge. I thought the Huey was hard to learn. :D Cowboy10uk [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Fighter pilots make movies, Attack pilots make history, Helicopter pilots make heros. :pilotfly: Corsair 570x Crystal Case, Intel 8700K O/clocked to 4.8ghz, 32GB Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3200 MHZ Ram, 2 x 1TB M2 drives, 2 x 4TB Hard Drives, Nvidia EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW, Maximus x Hero MB, H150i Cooler, 6 x Corsair LL120 RGB Fans And a bloody awful Pilot
bart Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 (edited) I'm interested! Good post btw:thumbup: Keep at it, it gets easier honest. Then you will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. Then jump in a Huey and crash it straight away!!! I did...lol. I can't get enough of the Gazelle, she sure is awsome. reemit0772 Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I agree, when I fired it up initially I thought,:helpsmilie:!. But then I figured out my saturation etc and I can't get enough of flying it. I used to maintain Gazelles for the UK MOD AAC, and am for 20 years a licensed helicopter engineer . I have to congratulate Polychop for the fidelity of the detail they have embedded in this module. Mt5_Roie Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Very proud of you Cowboy...I remember it like it was yesterday you were eagerly excited about the release, and now you can fly her for an hour. If you want to really have some fun, get the Oculus CV1, and do a couple long combat missions. I think I lost about 2-3 pounds in sweat and adrenaline from it. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester

Out of interest, how much clearer is the CV1, I love the DK2, but the resolution just isn't there. Is it possible to finally read the dials and switches, spot targets etc or is it still blurry? That's a great idea though, 2 players in VR operating a Gazelle, damn what an exciting prospect. Mt5_Roie Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Closer object like gauges and dials are easier to read. The Gazelle cockpit looks amazing with it. Stuff that you would normally have to zoom in for you'll have to lean in for (like switches with smaller writing). Distant object have gotten better, but there is still room to improve. With the A-10C I was able to do gun runs without issues and saw my targets ok. I think in air to air you might not see the enemy as quickly...but I don't do much air to air. Cowboy10uk Posted May 17, 2016 Author Posted May 17, 2016 Fantastic news, thanks Poly. Once they sort out their stock issue, I might just give it a look after all. I was planning on waiting for 2nd gen. Certainly is the future. Mt5_Roie Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Games that are designed for it work amazingly. Not sure if you can access the Oculus Home with the Dk2. But it's basically like an app store for VR games and apps. I tried some of the free ones and they are amazing. I still haven't spent any big money of the bigger games, but I might just have to soon. JABO2009 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 just wanna add my experience here to this thread and first of all scream out a BIG BIG THANK YOU ! to Polychop Simulations for delivering the Gazelle. I started learning to fly the Gazelle 2 days ago and after she killed me instantly a few times (never forget to turn the 4 autopilot switches before you go *:-)*), its getting better and better with every flight and I'm managing to return to base and landing in the meantime... with the first try outs being frustrating, the flying experience turns out now to be so much rewarding , if you treat it accordingly, this nimble machine is flying awesome ! and shes a beauty, also sound - wise. Im happy I bought it and looking forward to many challenging sorties with it... Mt5_Roie Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I think this happens with most newer aircraft. Especially if your not familiar with that type (fixed wing vs heli). Personally I think those WW2 planes are trying to kill me everytime I try taking off. Don't think I've had one perfect takeoff in those things yet. just wanna add my experience here to this thread and first of all scream out a BIG BIG THANK YOU ! to Polychop Simulations for delivering the Gazelle. Phantom88 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Awesome post Cowboy,Congrats!! Have you got through the "Improve your Pilot Skills Mission"?? This mission really trained me to treat this bird gently.Flying 66' above the ground really limits your room for mistakes. Patrick
Fri13 Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I think many new pilots does big mistakes by trying to take it out nicely and easy. It should be taken from first start as roughly and aggressively as possible to quickly learn how it handles and you will learn it in-out without a single crash in 1-2 minutes. Of course, this requires that person knows the basics about helicopter controls in theory and works in its limits (so doesn't pump collective up/down or wave cyclic like making cream). I do that with every single aircraft and it is best way to learn. Example when Mig-21Bis came out, first thing I did was to fly at full throttle between big cities just 10-20m from the ground strafing between buildings and hills, learning the aircraft inside out. After that learning things with manual made it super easy to maneuver and handle. So let the beast go wild and just try to guide it ;) i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Cowboy10uk Posted May 18, 2016 Author Posted May 18, 2016 Well just did another 30 mins flying in the Gazelle, trying to get in 30 mins everyday, and damn my flying is coming on leaps and bounds, started on enclosed LZs today, still not overly pretty as I tend to over correct as I transition from forward flight into a hover, but still managed to get in and out of them ok and no hard landings today at all. I then switched back over to my beloved Huey, so I didn't start to get skill fade. I was very presently surprised to find her smooth to handle, she seemed so placid compared tomlastvtime I flew her, I'm guessing as the Gazelle is such a sensitive young lady, the delicate muscle memory that is being imprinted so I can control her is being transferred over to when I fly the Huey. It now makes perfect sense why the Brits used Gazelles to train pilots, once you get used to the sensitivity needed to fly the Gazelle, you have the skills for good smooth flight for any other helo. I think it's fair to say that if you want to learn how to fly Helos and certainly in DCS, then start with the Gazelle, put the hours in learning her, controlling her, navigation, night flying, landings, confined landings, hovering and then and only then the weapon systems. When you then move up a level to the Huey and then again to the MI8, you will find it so so much easier. Polychop, I've said it before and I'll say it again, well done, THANKYOU this helo is amazing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the FM in any shape way or form, it's purely down to getting used to the sensitivity needed to fly her, basically if you see the cyclic moving, you're being too heavy handed.
