JazonXD Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 So evidently, DCS is not quite well optimised and seems to only use about 1 to 2 threads at a time at the most. This obviously causes serious performance tanking, sometimes dropping frams all the way down to 10 to 20 when I have a TGP, MAV running and staring at an intense battlefield. Is there any way that I can get better performance? Sometimes missions are simply unplayable because of this. Regularly, if I'm up higher and not looking at the ground war, I'd get anywhere from 70fps to the maximum ~150fps. My system specs are in my signature. Thanks :) AMD 5600X -- Gigabyte RTX 3070 Vision -- 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 -- HP Reverb G2 -- Logitech 3D Extreme Pro -- Thrustmaster TWCS BRRRT! Car and aviation enthusiast, gun nut and computer nerd!
sgtmike74 Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Bumping up to 16 gigs of RAM really opened up the sim for me.
JazonXD Posted May 25, 2016 Author Posted May 25, 2016 Bumping up to 16 gigs of RAM really opened up the sim for me. Hmm interesting, i'll look into that. I never really paid attention to the RAM because I always saw that it barely used more than 7.5GB at the most... The_Nephilim Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Well the problem is the VRAM usage on that it very high and if you don't have the vram o n your GPU it takes from your ram. I seen it as high as 12GB in 2.0.. So yes get more ram 16gb is the new standard as far as I am concerned.. kosmos224 Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 In my opinion, a better processor is the key not only for this sim, but for any game that requires tons of GHz for running well. The graphic card and RAM is important, but in this case is too much processing in background: earth units, air units, sea units, flights, missiles, anti aircraf guns, triggers, the AI of the units, etc, etc, etc... All of them managed by the CPU. If you CPU is old or not much fast, this things kills the performance.

The reason why so much GHz is needed is because DCS does not utilize more than 2 threads, so it depends on the speed of those two threads as much as possible to calculate the game. I really hope we'll get some better performance soon. I think this should be one of the priorities among many other things. Lao Fei Mao Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Since 1.50 version, ED has moved most of caculation into GPU. And from my personal experience, the NV card runs better than AMD card in DSC.
Stuge Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) It's the RAM. 8 GB equals stutters, and the Nevada map is unplayable with 8 GB. Now with 16 everything is so much smoother! TGP-induced FPS drop can be prevented by unselecting the "every frame" option from cockpit display resolution setting. You can still use max resolution for the displays, but having them render every frame can kill your FPS. Oh and don't forget to disable mirrors, they have always been an FPS killer! Do you know how many Sims. use more than 2 Cores? for that matter how many games use more than the "Standard" 2 cores? Are those who also believe in this aware of the Sims. development date? and that the use of cores in this case is standard to the industry at that time? As for making this or any other title of this era a multi-core package. The total rewriting of this title is the only way to achieve this great metamorphosis. We all would love to see this done but some are aware of the drain on resources needed to achieve this feat. Keeping in mind that this title was developed by a small group of deep thinking well intentioned men of great vision, I for one am astounded at said achievements thus far. hughlb Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 I've been tooling around in 1.5 Beta for the first time, having spent this year in 2.0 Alpha. I've configured my setting to the same as the Alpha, but I'm getting framerate drops from 60+ to 30-45 when low down near villages. Something's amiss, as even over Vegas in 2.0 I'm getting pretty stable 55-60+fps. I've heard there is a tree shadow mod for 1.5, could this help? Or is the T3 map technology currently being used simply struggling - should I hold off trying to solve it until the map is re-released with the Nevada tech? Sorry, I'm just trying to get my head around what might be causing the slow down. | Windows 10 | I7 4790K @ 4.4ghz | Asus PG348Q | Asus Strix 1080TI | 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2400 DDR3 | Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 | Samsung EVO 850 500GB (x2) | SanDisk 240GB Extreme Pro | Coolermaster Vanguard S 650Watt 80+ | Fractal Design R4 | VirPil T-50 | MFG Crosswind Graphite | KW-908 JetSeat Sim Edition | TrackIR 5 | [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
