Air to air refueling

Recommended Posts

Might be a dumb question, but is the F-5E capable of air-to-air refueling? I don't think it is but I want to make sure.

Thanks

I may quote from WIkipedia:

"After winning the International Fighter Aircraft competition in 1970, a program aimed at providing effective low-cost fighters to American allies, Northrop introduced the second-generation F-5E Tiger II in 1972. This upgrade included more powerful engines, higher fuel capacity, greater wing area and improved leading edge extensions for a better turn rate, optional air-to-air refueling, and improved avionics including air-to-air radar."

There is also a photo of an F-5E air refuelling https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/Moroccan_F-5_jet.jpg

But it seems an option so it may be in or not.

I'm sad Belsimtek. She wants to bring the Maverick for the F-5E (I'm happy for it). But do not want to bring the aerial refueling probe.

Lack of aerial refueling capability will certainly not keep me from buying this module ( I already have ) but it would have been sooooo much more enjoyable with that capability!! :pilotfly:

because only modernized F5E's have that capability. the idea is to not give us a F16 lite but an older generation F5E with older avionics to compete with mig21bis.

ultimatley the F5E3's radar ( an/apq 159) and RWR are more sophisticated than the that of the mig21.

id argue gunsight is better too because it has a range bar within the reticule ,which decreases as you get closer to target.

buts its defenitely close enough to the mig21bis and something comparable to 3rd generation tech.

It seems odd the E didn't have a fuel probe. The CF-5A which came into service in 1968 had the ability, I would wonder why they didn't have it on the E version which came out a few years later. Maybe I'm not looking up the info correctly.

The base F-5A didn't have a probe either. Optional extras like refueling probes and radar warning equipment were added at the customers request, they weren't standard.

The Refuling Probe was Optional.

So if the User wanted a Refuling probe their F-5Es would be fitted with Refuling probes before Delivery.

The Probe was optional with the CF-5 as well.

How does the gunsight in the F-5E compare to the gunsight in the MiG-21? I know that the MiG's gunsight is a hassle to use sometimes, especially for a2a gunnery. Will the F-5E's gunsight be more stable and accurate?

Most of the difficulty in using the MiGs cannon I find is it's terrible muzzle velocity resulting in the pipper flying off the sight glass at even low G. The M39 on the F-5 has a much greater velocity, more similar to the vulcan on the F-15 so I guess it'll be easier to hit with. However as to the ease of use and ability of the radar to keep lock I cannot say, the manual makes it sound good enough but who knows how BST will actually model it.

A slight on your part. The CF-5A was built in Canada under license from Northrop by Canadair. There was no option in the Canadian version.

Very excited for the F-5. Hopefully down the road sometime they might be able to add Aerial Refuelling as its a big part of what we do now.

This would prolong the life of the module. It would be one more thing to do. :joystick:

Belsimtek I just bought the F-5E Tiger II. Please add the refueling probe. Thank you!

Another question (not related to refueling), but will the F-5E be able to carry countermeasures such as chaff and flares?

yes

suu-25c dispenser.

alhough it seems to be labled just "flare" dispenser. So it seems it drop flares for IR missiles but nothing said about Chaffs against SAR guided missiles.

I was under the impression that the SUU-25C was a parachute illumination flare dispenser, not a countermeasures dispenser.

Indeed, SUU-25 is an illum flare dispenser, not a countermeasures dispenser.
