Oh, how I've wanted to get a post out here.

For all of the RIOs out there that want as close to 1:1 as you can get, I've been meticulously working on a new panel that should look quite familiar... and of course, I'm happy to share the files for it once I have the rest of it cinched together. Measurements and designs for the panel were taken as closely as I could get them from the local Tomcat we have at our city museum so they should be pretty close to accurate.

So far, I've made the model for the selector knobs, SVG maps for the hole cutouts and the text labels, the mechanism for selecting which of the 43 positions to use on the thumb wheel, and the mechanism to turn two BCD 0-9 encoders for the DLVY OPTNS selectors. Last couple pieces involve shaping the small metal flip shield for SEL JETT and getting the gears for the WPN TYPE wheel printed or machined so it works as expected. Overall, this has taken about a month of work, but I'm excited to make this my next years-long hobby project.

Feedback to any of it is always welcome!!!

On that note, would it be best to assume SendCutSend is going to be my best option for getting the acrylic cut the way I need it?image.png null

Looks great!  Hitting the rest of the RIO office?  Since I play in VR, laser cut panels don't matter as much to me and raised/embossed on FDM is usually good enough for the look.  I've had a K40 or K60 on my wishlist for awhile but something else always seems to come up.

I have the printed LANTIRN and RIO HCU from the CG Trader and was hoping to address the CAP myself (don't really need flipping boards and the rest is just push buttons).  Other folks have done the TACAN but the Armament and the Countermeasures panels were the ones that I knew there would be issues with.

What sort of controller are you looking to use for all these inputs?

Specs & Wishlist:

Core i9 9900k 5.0Ghz, Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero, 64GB G.Skill Trident 3600, Asus RoG Strix 3090 OC, 2TB x Samsung Evo 970 M.2 boot. Samsung Evo 860 storage, Coolermaster H500M, ML360R AIO

HP Reverb G2, Samsung Odyssey+ WMR; VKB Gunfighter 2, MCG Pro; Virpil T-50CM v3; Slaw RX Viper v2

Totally feel you on the VR vs. physical build tradeoff, but man, there’s something about flipping actual switches that just hits different. The CAP’s on my list too, just not sure how far down the rabbit hole I wanna go.

I’m using a Mega2560 for this section, but I might be able to get away with a Nano by multiplexing the switches. Still working on the hardware designs for now, but that will likely come next week. The laser cutter also got in today so I can properly etch the acrylic.

This is Version 3 of the weapon selector wheel. A Hall-effect absolute encoder is going to go on the drum-side axle to read the wheel position and relay it to DCS.

Even though my tomcat is still awaiting being turned into a IKEA flat pack, I am already thinking about the screens I will use as the main displays. I know that a lot of people are going the VR route, but I already have VR and due to my tropical climate and sinus issues it’s not the best the solution.  I am keen to hear what others are going to use as their main display?
